This book, first published in 1979, examines the little-studied
forerunners of the Russian revolutionary movement - the Russian
section of the First International. It looks at the social
democratic and Marxist Russians in the International, as well as
examining the complex relations between the terrorist Sergei
Nechaev and Marx's friends, as well as tracing the activities of
Michael Bakunin. It also analyses, for the first time in English,
the activities of the Russian revolutionaries in the Paris Commune.
It integrates early Russian social democracy into the larger
context of European socialist and working-class movements.
This book is an authoritative and well-structured text which is
both topic and curriculum oriented, aimed to appeal to a wider
multi-professional audience in line with the current NHS workforce
training needs in the UK. It is based on the 'specialist
certificate examination' (SCE), awarded for the completion of
higher specialist training. Following closely the published
blueprint from the Royal College of Physicians, and the curriculum
from JRCPTB, it provides an up-to-date bank of revision material.
These 300 questions in the 'single best answer' (SBA) format (like
the actual assessment), are complete with comprehensive,
well-evidenced explanations and explanatory further reading
material. Key Features Maps the entire curriculum covered on the
geriatric specialization exam Addresses the gap in the market to
educate on the core curriculum for the busy professionals and post
graduate medical trainees working towards this examination The book
is thematically organized to make it an accessible quick reference
for also those not planning to take the exam but seeking to broaden
and deepen their own knowledge base
First published in 1978, Georgian Houses for All describes how
little Gregorian houses came into being and how the original
inhabitants used them. Gregorian houses at their smallest and
simplest can be seen everywhere in the British Isles – detached,
semi-detached and joined together in terraces. There are probably
still over a million of them, built during a period of 130 years
without the direct aid of architects. John Woodforde points out
that an instinctive wish for a symmetrical front seems to be shown
by young children’s drawings of houses, these being generally
balanced and orderly. The Georgians’ love of symmetry, marked in
their way of hanging pictures, was part of a desire for private
order amongst public disorder, a desire to have one small sphere in
which nature was fully controlled. John Woodforde reminds us that,
in the present-day return to terrace-house building, the Georgian
version remains a valuable guide. The book will be of interest to
students of architecture, urban planning, and history.
First published in 1983, Farm Buildings gives a fascinating account
of what has been happening in and around farm buildings since
medieval times, and describes their structure, their function and
their style. This is followed by a long section in which
sixty-eight representative types of Welsh and English farm
buildings are commented on by the author and illustrated by John
Penoyre. John Woodforde emphasizes that just as people increasingly
enjoy looking at old farm buildings, so too some farmers are coming
to appreciate them with a new eye, noting that they possess in
their yards assets whose value is greater in several ways than they
used to think. This book will be of interest to students of
architecture, history and agriculture.
An essential introduction to one of the most timely and important
subjects in economics International Macroeconomics presents a
rigorous and theoretically elegant treatment of real-world
international macroeconomic problems, incorporating the latest
economic research while maintaining a microfounded, optimizing, and
dynamic general equilibrium approach. This one-of-a-kind textbook
introduces a basic model and applies it to fundamental questions in
international economics, including the determinants of the current
account in small and large economies, processes of adjustment to
shocks, the determinants of the real exchange rate, the role of
fixed and flexible exchange rates in models with nominal
rigidities, and interactions between monetary and fiscal policy.
The book confronts theoretical predictions using actual data,
highlighting both the power and limits of given theories and
encouraging critical thinking. Provides a rigorous and elegant
treatment of fundamental questions in international macroeconomics
Brings undergraduate and master's instruction in line with modern
economic research Follows a microfounded, optimizing, and dynamic
general equilibrium approach Addresses fundamental questions in
international economics, such as the role of capital controls in
the presence of financial frictions and balance-of-payments crises
Uses real-world data to test the predictions of theoretical models
Features a wealth of exercises at the end of each chapter that
challenge students to hone their theoretical skills and scrutinize
the empirical relevance of models Accompanied by a website with
lecture slides for every chapter
Key Features Provides practical therapeutic advice including

Drawing on recent developments in continental political thought
'Disorienting Democracy' rethinks democracy as a practice that can
be used to counter the increasing poverty, inequality and
insecurity that mark our contemporary era. In answer to concerns
that the contemporary left is not strong enough for these so-called
times of crisis this book argues that the left must urgently return
to strongly redistributive policies but that this alone is not
enough. To bring lasting change it must continually work to
untangle its longstanding emancipatory ideals from the dominatory
tendencies that have undermined and weakened it throughout the 20th
century. In response, this book argues that the work of Jacques
Ranciere is key. Countering domination with a resolute assertion of
the capacities of all he gives us a radical politics of
emancipation that emerges through subjects who refuse to know their
place. In appropriating alternative ways of living they disidentify
with everyday consensus, rupturing and subverting our unequal order
to force alternatives onto the agenda. Juxtaposing Ranciere with
other thinkers from Judith Butler to Jacques Derrida, Woodford
draws out the practical implications of Ranciere's work for our
current time. She develops dissensual practices that provoke us to
not just assert that another world is possible, but to bring about
that other world today. Challenging what it means to do political
philosophy, rethinking the role of critical theory, ethics,
education, literature and aesthetics for democracy, and rejecting
the longstanding divide between theory and activism, this book will
be of particular interest to graduates, scholars and activists.

Toward a Feminist Ethics of Nonviolence brings together major
feminist thinkers to debate Cavarero’s call for a postural ethics
of nonviolence and a sociality rooted in bodily interdependence.
Toward a Feminist Ethics of Nonviolence brings together three major
feminist thinkers—Adriana Cavarero, Judith Butler, and Bonnie
Honig—to debate Cavarero’s call for a postural ethics of
nonviolence. The book consists of three longer essays by Cavarero,
Butler, and Honig, followed by shorter responses by a range of
scholars that widen the dialogue, drawing on post-Marxism, Italian
feminism, queer theory, and lesbian and gay politics. Together, the
authors contest the boundaries of their common project for a
pluralistic, heterogeneous, but urgent feminist ethics of
nonviolence.

Most of the existing literature on substance abuse and treatment is
limited either solely to women or to both genders in general. Boys
and men, however, have a higher rate of substance use, abuse, and
addiction, and require more specialized treatment methods that take
into account the unique developmental and social aspects they face
throughout their lives. This text is a guidebook that takes a
developmental lifespan approach to discuss the biological and
psychosocial factors that may be either protective or risk factors
for substance use disorders for males. This developmental approach
will provide substance abuse prevention specialists and treatment
clinicians with a basic understanding of male development in order
to insure greater gender-sensitivity with their prevention efforts
and to recognize gender-specific issues in the substance abuse
assessment and treatment realms. Relevant case examples are
included that illustrate work with boys and men of all ages and
that address a variety of factors associated with culture,
ethnicity, race, religion, and sexual orientation. Mental health
practitioners working with boys and men will gain an increased
awareness about substance abuse among males, a better understanding
of male development in relation to substance use and abuse, and an
increased skill-level to provide more comprehensive,
gender-sensitive prevention and treatment practices for each
developmental level outlined in the text.

This book shows that the novel of German women's emancipation in
the late nineteenth century has been marginalized precisely because
of its engagement with politics and protest, and its communication
to a wide public of challenging ideas for social reform.

The finite element method is being used increasingly to solve
complex mathematical relationships in all areas of engineering. It
is particularly useful in aiding design engineers to select
appropriate and safe designs for structures, and to enable
prediction of what effects changes of use or structural
modifications have on the integrity and stress regime of individual
components. This book provides an introduction to PAFEC, one of the
most widely available and extensively used software packages, and
presents a logical and careful guide on how to construct data sets,
solve specific problems and use PAFEC most effectively, whilst
later chapters describe more complex analysis and relationships.
This is a book for professionals, consultants and postgraduate
students in civil, geotechnical and mechanical engineering who have
access to computer systems supporting the PAFEC software package.

Frail older people now contribute the majority of the acute
emergency take both medical and surgical. Despite this there is
often a lack of confidence and knowledge among doctors and nurses
in treating older people in the Emergency Department and on
Emergency Assessment Units. -- From the Preface Emergency care of
frail older people is challenging but very rewarding. Older
patients tend to be complex and therefore their assessment needs to
be more extensive and include comprehensive geriatric assessment.
It is the extras in their assessment that are not usually needed in
younger patients, such as cognitive, functional and social
evaluations that make the difference in achieving a better outcome.
This book describes the key features of high quality care for frail
elderly patients in acute hospital settings. With chapters on
assessment and the characteristic non-specific ways that patients
tend to present (such as 'confusion', 'collapse query cause' and
'off legs'), this practical guide is ideal to have on-hand. As well
as common medical and surgical conditions, it also covers
medication management, elder abuse, pressure ulcers and
hypothermia, including the physiological changes seen in ageing and
ways to define frail patients. Tables, diagrams and images are
ideal for quick reference, and key points are summarised throughout
the text to aid comprehension, providing doctors, nurses and
therapists with both background and essential information to
provide the excellent acute care older people deserve.
For more than 2,000 years the art of Greece and Rome has lain at
the heart of western civilization. This book recaptures the
excitement of the artists who first created it. It traces the
daring innovations of those who, defying traditional wisdom,
explored new ideas; it describes the valiant struggles of sculptors
and painters to portray - for the first time - both the
complexities of the human form and the richness of human emotions.
So much has been destroyed by the ravages of time that Greek and
Roman art seems to consist only of impressive ruins and broken
fragments. Yet the creative achievements of the Greeks and their
legacy, as adapted by the Romans, have never lost their power.
Shakespeare in Cuba: Caliban's Books explores how Shakespeare is
consumed and appropriated in Cuba. It contributes to the
underrepresented field of Latin American Shakespeares by applying
the lens of cultural anthropophagy, a theory with Latin American
roots, to explore how Cuban artists ingest and transform
Shakespeare's plays. By consuming these works and incorporating
them into Cuban culture and literature, Cuban writers make the
plays their own while also nourishing the source texts and giving
Shakespeare a new afterlife.
This is a deliberately provocative book crossing many disciplinary
boundaries and locating music and art education within a context of
contemporary social and political problems in a time of growing
disruption and authoritarianism. Intended firstly for music teacher
educators, practicing music teachers, and graduate and
undergraduate music education majors, the book also speaks to arts
and media studies teachers, parents, or others interested in
exploring how composing, performing, improvising, conducting,
listening, dancing, teaching, learning, or engaging in music or
education criticism are all political acts because fundamentally
concerned with social values and thus inseparable from power and
politics. Among the book's central themes are the danger of
democratic deconsolidation in the West and how music education can
help counter that threat through the fostering of democratic
citizens who are aware of music's ubiquity in their lives and its
many roles in shaping public opinion and notions of truth, and for
better or for worse! The arts can obviously be used for ill, but as
George Orwell demonstrated in his own work, they can also be
employed in defense of democracy as modes of political thought and
action affording opportunities for the revitalization of society
through its re-imagining.
