The US-EU Security Relationship - The Tensions between a European and a Global Agenda (Hardcover, 1st Ed. 2011): Wyn Rees The US-EU Security Relationship - The Tensions between a European and a Global Agenda (Hardcover, 1st Ed. 2011)
Wyn Rees
R4,370 Discovery Miles 43 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A constantly evolving security agenda has become a vital part of US-EU relations. Contemporary security challenges such as the rise of international terrorism and the threat from 'states of concern' have - in recent years - forced the US and the EU to adapt their relationship and work together in new ways. Written by a leading authority, this incisive and wide-ranging book systematically examines the development of the transatlantic security relationship in the post-Cold War era. It assesses the nature of the US and EU as international actors and considers how they cooperate together. Rees argues that - despite divergences of interest after the end of the Cold War - the complex nature of contemporary challenges is driving both sides of the Atlantic towards increased cooperation. In addition, the book looks in detail at how global and European issues such as EU defence and enlargement policies, nuclear non-proliferation, and the war on terror have affected security relations.

Pauline Eadie, Wyn Rees
R4,416 Discovery Miles 44 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates how states in both the West and Asia have responded to multi-dimensional security challenges since the end of the Cold War, focusing on military transformation. Looking at a cross-section of different countries, this volume assesses how their armed forces have responded to a changing international security context. The book investigates two main themes. First, how the process of military 'transformation'- in terms of technological advances and new ways of conducting warfare - has impacted on the militaries of various countries. These technologies are hugely expensive and the extent to which different states can afford them, and the ability of these states to utilise these technologies, differs greatly. Second, the volume investigates the social dimensions of military transformation. It reveals the expanding breadth of tasks that contemporary armed forces have been required to address. This includes the need for military forces to work with other actors, such as non-governmental agencies and humanitarian organisations, and the ability of armed forces to fight asymmetric opponents and conduct post-conflict reconstruction tasks. The conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan exemplified how important the relationship between technological and social transformation has become. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, military innovation, Asian politics, security studies and International Relations.

The European Union in the Security of Europe - From Cold War to Terror War (Hardcover): Steve Marsh, Wyn Rees The European Union in the Security of Europe - From Cold War to Terror War (Hardcover)
Steve Marsh, Wyn Rees
R4,419 Discovery Miles 44 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the European Union's contribution to providing security in Europe amidst an increasingly complex and challenging environment. In this new and comprehensive guide to the EU's role in security since the end of the Cold War, the authors offer an explanation of EU internal and external security regimes, and argue that the Union has become an important exporter of security within its region. However, the Union's rhetorical ambitions and commitments continue to outstrip its capabilities and it lacks both a common conceptualisation of security and a meaningful, shared strategic culture. Drawing extensively on primary sources the book examines the Union's relations with the US and Russia in a time of shifting geostrategic calculations and priorities. With the EU capacity for enlargement slowing, this text presents a detailed assessment of EU security policies towards Central Europe, the Mediterranean, the Western Balkans, Eastern Europe and South Caucasus. European Union Security will be of interest to students and scholars of the EU, security studies, and international relations.

Transatlantic Counter-Terrorism Cooperation - The New Imperative (Hardcover, New): Wyn Rees Transatlantic Counter-Terrorism Cooperation - The New Imperative (Hardcover, New)
Wyn Rees
R2,877 Discovery Miles 28 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The events of 9/11 brought the subject of international terrorism to the top of the global security agenda. This new book focuses on the way that the transatlantic allies have sought to combat international terrorism.
Since the end of the Cold War, Europe and the United States have adapted the security regime that proved so effective in ensuring peace on the continent. Transatlantic counter-terrorism cooperation has required the full range of international instruments: from the use of military force and intelligence sharing to novel forms of working together such as over law enforcement and border security.
Wyn Rees traces the development of transatlantic security relations, focussing on key issues such as:
- The US-led "War on Terrorism" and whether it has resulted in convergence or divergence in US and European policies towards combating terrorism.
- The importance of transatlantic organizations in channelling efforts to deal with the threat.
- The pressure for both internal and external security cooperation in transatlantic relations.
- The tensions and challenges that emanate from attempting to generate cooperation between unequal state actors.
This text will greatly interest students and scholars of International Relations, International Security and Transatlantic Relations.

G. Wyn Rees, N. (Department Of Law, University Of Leicester) Neuwahl, P. (Department Of Politics, University Of Leicester) Lynch
R1,735 Discovery Miles 17 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first scholarly look at the likely future of the EU after next year's Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) which will probably be more important to the future of Europe than was the Maastricht Treaty. Since Maastricht it has become clear that the future developments are less certain with regard to the EU and integration. The IGC will try and resolve tensions such as "widening", Europe to include former communist countries while also trying to "deepen" Europe with increased political and economic integration; providing a framework which is acceptable to those countries who favor more integration and an early move to monetary union. Reforming the European Union provides comprehensive coverage of these key issues and adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining political science, economics and law.

International Politics in Europe - The New Agenda (Paperback): G. Wyn Rees International Politics in Europe - The New Agenda (Paperback)
G. Wyn Rees
R1,526 Discovery Miles 15 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Throughout much of Europe the preoccupation with military security that dominated political thinking after the end of the Second World War has given way to an emphasis upon mutual interdependence. But what does this mean, both theoretically and practically, terms of a "new" agenda? The focus of this book is upon four main issues: economic development; security; the environment; and human rights. These are of course not in themselves new issues, but during the period of the Cold War, they were subordinated to the ideological division of the continent. Now they have emerged as decisive in the way in which Europe will develop. The authors examine the four issues in depth, and draw out the links between them. They also examine the various levels at which these problems exist - the level of the "system", of the state and of the individual. Thus it is possible for them to illustrate general issues with specific reference to local, national and Europe-wide political debates.
