This thesis focuses on the energy, chemical and carbon implications of diverse wastewater treatment alternatives, and offers effective solutions for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to achieve sustainability goals. The author first uses the life cycle philosophy to explore the environmental performance of several representative wastewater treatment systems, and then proposes a refined assessment framework, accompanying analytical toolkit and case study for further quantifying the environmental sustainability of various wastewater management scenarios. Allowing readers to gain a better understanding of the existing wastewater treatment technologies from a sustainability perspective, this book helps decision makers identify promising approaches to the environmentally friendly operation of WWTPs and make infrastructure investments that are appropriate for future changing conditions.

Understanding the dynamics of multi-phase flows has been a challenge in the fields of nonlinear dynamics and fluid mechanics. This chapter reviews our work on two-phase flow dynamics in combination with complex network theory. We systematically carried out gas-water/oil-water two-phase flow experiments for measuring the time series of flow signals which is studied in terms of the mapping from time series to complex networks. Three network mapping methods were proposed for the analysis and identification of flow patterns, i.e. Flow Pattern Complex Network (FPCN), Fluid Dynamic Complex Network (FDCN) and Fluid Structure Complex Network (FSCN). Through detecting the community structure of FPCN based on K-means clustering, distinct flow patterns can be successfully distinguished and identified. A number of FDCN's under different flow conditions were constructed in order to reveal the dynamical characteristics of two-phase flows. The FDCNs exhibit universal power-law degree distributions. The power-law exponent and the network information entropy are sensitive to the transition among different flow patterns, which can be used to characterize nonlinear dynamics of the two-phase flow. FSCNs were constructed in the phase space through a general approach that we introduced. The statistical properties of FSCN can provide quantitative insight into the fluid structure of two-phase flow. These interesting and significant findings suggest that complex networks can be a potentially powerful tool for uncovering the nonlinear dynamics of two-phase flows.
This volume highlights recent advances in data science, including image processing and enhancement on large data, shape analysis and geometry processing in 2D/3D, exploration and understanding of neural networks, and extensions to atypical data types such as social and biological signals. The contributions are based on discussions from two workshops under Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM), namely the second Women in Data Science and Mathematics (WiSDM) Research Collaboration Workshop that took place between July 29 and August 2, 2019 at the Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) in Providence, Rhode Island, and the third Women in Shape (WiSh) Research Collaboration Workshop that took place between July 16 and 20, 2018 at Trier University in Robert-Schuman-Haus, Trier, Germany. These submissions, seeded by working groups at the conference, form a valuable source for readers who are interested in ideas and methods developed in interdisciplinary research fields. The book features ideas, methods, and tools developed through a broad range of domains, ranging from theoretical analysis on graph neural networks to applications in health science. It also presents original results tackling real-world problems that often involve complex data analysis on large multi-modal data sources.
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Mobile Services, AIMS 2020, held as part of SCF 2020, during September 18-20, 2020. The conference was planned to take place in Honolulu, HI, USA and was changed to a virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 11 full and 2 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 42 submissions. They cover topics in AI Modeling, AI Analysis, AI and Mobile Applications, AI Architecture, AI Management, AI Engineering, Mobile backend as a service (MBaaS), User experience of AI and mobile services.
This book provides some recent advance in the study of stochastic nonlinear Schroedinger equations and their numerical approximations, including the well-posedness, ergodicity, symplecticity and multi-symplecticity. It gives an accessible overview of the existence and uniqueness of invariant measures for stochastic differential equations, introduces geometric structures including symplecticity and (conformal) multi-symplecticity for nonlinear Schroedinger equations and their numerical approximations, and studies the properties and convergence errors of numerical methods for stochastic nonlinear Schroedinger equations. This book will appeal to researchers who are interested in numerical analysis, stochastic analysis, ergodic theory, partial differential equation theory, etc.
High standards of noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance are expected in vehicle design. Refinement is therefore one of the main engineering/design attributes to be addressed when developing new vehicle models and components. Vehicle noise and vibration refinement provides a review of noise and vibration refinement principles, methods, advanced experimental and modelling techniques and palliative treatments necessary in the process of vehicle design, development and integration in order to meet noise and vibration standards. Case studies from the collective experience of specialists working for major automotive companies are included to form an important reference for engineers practising in the motor industry who seek to overcome the technological challenges faced in developing quieter, more comfortable cars. The reader will be able to develop an in-depth knowledge of the source and transmission mechanisms of noise and vibration in motor vehicles, and a clear understanding of vehicle refinement issues that directly influence a customer's purchasing decision.
Frequency Analysis of Vibration Energy Harvesting Systems aims to present unique frequency response methods for analyzing and improving vibration energy harvesting systems. Vibration energy is usually converted into heat energy, which is transferred to and wasted in the environment. If this vibration energy can be converted into useful electric energy, both the performance and energy efficiency of machines, vehicles, and structures will be improved, and new opportunities will open up for powering electronic devices. To make use of ambient vibration energy, an effective analysis and design method is established and developed in this book. The book covers a wide range of frequency response analysis methods and includes details of a variety of real-life applications. MATLAB programming is introduced in the first two chapters and used in selected methods throughout the book. Using the methods studied, readers will learn how to analyze and optimize the efficiency of vibration energy systems. This book will be ideal for postgraduate students and researchers in mechanical and energy engineering.

In this thesis, the phenomenon of fundamental hope is understood as atmosphere. As a metaphor, hope as atmosphere finds a new expression of hope other than the light-metaphor that dominates the discourse of hope. Hope is not only the light that illuminates the dark moments of life, but also, more fundamentally, in the air, it lies in the sphere in-between and saturates each life experience and every living moment. As an existential reality, hope as atmosphere reveals our hopeful way of atmospheric co-existence. Communal love constitutes the ground of this hopeful co-existence, it keeps the hopeful co-existence constantly refreshed and open, guaranteeing more possibilities of hope. On the basis of communal love, hopeful co-existence shows its ontological meaning as a way towards life. The thesis of hope as atmosphere finds resonance and expression not only in Christian trinitarianly based understanding of hope, but also in the most central doctrine of co-humanity in Confucianism.
This new and timely book addresses a series of questions regarding one of the most important political developments in contemporary China: the state-led democratic practice of village self-government in rural areas. Why would an authoritarian state promote grassroots democratic reform? To what extent has this reform changed the local power structures, grassroots governance, and state-peasant relations? What would be the implications of this grassroots democratic reform for China's democratisation in the long run? This book examines the origins, process, and impact of this paradoxical political development and explores the dynamics of political change and mutually transforming relations between the state and society in Post-Mao China. It argues that the practice of village self-government was promoted by the Chinese party-state to cope with the dual crises of legitimacy and governability it had faced in the countryside after a decade of rural economic reforms.
