The Role of the Computer in Statistics David Cox Nuffield College, Oxford OXIINF, U.K. A classification of statistical problems via their computational demands hinges on four components (I) the amount and complexity of the data, (il) the specificity of the objectives of the analysis, (iii) the broad aspects of the approach to analysis, (ill) the conceptual, mathematical and numerical analytic complexity of the methods. Computational requi rements may be limiting in (I) and (ill), either through the need for special programming effort, or because of the difficulties of initial data management or because of the load of detailed analysis. The implications of modern computational developments for statistical work can be illustrated in the context of the study of specific probabilistic models, the development of general statistical theory, the design of investigations and the analysis of empirical data. While simulation is usually likely to be the most sensible way of investigating specific complex stochastic models, computerized algebra has an obvious role in the more analyti cal work. It seems likely that statistics and applied probability have made insufficient use of developments in numerical analysis associated more with classical applied mathematics, in particular in the solution of large systems of ordinary and partial differential equations, integral equations and integra-differential equations and for the centsraction of "useful" in formation from integral transforms. Increasing emphasis on models incorporating specific subject-matter considerations is one route to bridging the gap between statistical ana."

Adaptive Regression (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000): Yadolah Dodge, Jana Jureckova Adaptive Regression (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000)

R1,525 Discovery Miles 15 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

While there have been a large number of estimation methods proposed and developed for linear regression, none has proved good for all purposes. This text focuses on the construction of an adaptive combination of two estimation methods so as to help users make an objective choice and combine the desirable properties of two estimators.

The papers assembled in this book were presented at the biannual symposium of Inter national Association for Statistical Computing in Neuchcitel, Switzerland, in August of 1992. This congress marked the tenth such meeting from its inception in 1974 at Vienna and maintained the tradition of providing a forum for the open discussion of progress made in computer oriented statistics and the dissemination of new ideas throughout the statistical community. It was gratifying to see how well the groups of theoretical statisti cians, software developers and applied research workers were represented, whose mixing is an event made uniquely possible by this symposium. While maintaining traditions certain new features have been introduced at this con ference: there were a larger number of invited speakers; there was more commercial sponsorship and exhibition space; and a larger body of proceedings have been published. The structure of the proceedings follows a standard format: the papers have been grouped together according to a rough subject matter classification, and within topic follow an approximate aphabetical order. The papers are published in two volumes ac cording to the emphasis of the topics: volume I gives a slight leaning towards statistics and modelling, while volume II is focussed more on computation; but this is certainly only a crude distinction and the volumes have to be thought of as the result of a single en terprise.

Linear regression is an important area of statistics, theoretical or applied. There have been a large number of estimation methods proposed and developed for linear regression. Each has its own competitive edge but none is good for all purposes. This manuscript focuses on construction of an adaptive combination of two estimation methods. The purpose of such adaptive methods is to help users make an objective choice and to combine desirable properties of two estimators.

The Oxford Dictionary of Statistical Terms (Paperback, New ed): Yadolah Dodge The Oxford Dictionary of Statistical Terms (Paperback, New ed)
Yadolah Dodge
R1,699 Discovery Miles 16 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the new-in-paperback edition of The Oxford Dictionary of Statistical Terms, the much-awaited sixth edition of the acclaimed standard reference work in statistics, published on behalf of the International Statistical Institute. The first edition, known as the Dictionary of Statistical Terms, was edited in 1957 by the late Sir Maurice Kendall and the late Dr W.R. Buckland. As one of the first dictionaries of statistics it set high standards for the subject, and became a well-respected reference. This edition has been carefully updated and extended to include the most recent terminology and techniques in statistics. Significant revision and expansion from an international editorial board of senior statisticians has resulted in a comprehenisive reference text which includes 30% more material than previous editions. Ideal for all who use statistics in the workplace and in research including all scientists and social scientists, especially in law, politics, finance, business, and history, it is an indispensable reference.

R3,971 Discovery Miles 39 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sir David Cox is among the most important statisticians of the past half-century. He has made pioneering and highly influential contributions to a uniquely wide range of topics in statistics and applied probability. His teaching has inspired generations of students, and many well-known researchers have begun as his graduate students or have worked with him at early stages of their careers. Legions of others have been stimulated and enlightened by the clear, concise, and direct exposition exemplified by his many books, papers, and lectures. This book presents a collection of chapters by major statistical researchers who attended a conference held at the University of Neuchatel in July 2004 to celebrate David Cox's 80th birthday. Each chapter is carefully crafted and collectively present current developments across a wide range of research areas from epidemiology, environmental science, finance, computing and medicine. Edited by Anthony Davison, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland; Yadolah Dodge, University of Neuchatel, Switzerland; and N. Wermuth, Goteborg University, Sweden, with chapters by Ole E. Barndorff-Nielsen, Sarah C. Darby, Christina Davies, Peter J. Diggle, David Firth, Peter Hall, Valerie S. Isham, Kung-Yee Liang, Peter McCullagh, Paul McGale, Amilcare Porporato, Nancy Reid, Brian D. Ripley, Ignacio Rodriguez-Iturbe, Andrea Rotnitzky, Neil Shephard, Scott L. Zeger, and including a brief biography of David Cox, this book is suitable for students of statistics, epidemiology, environmental science, finance, computing and medicine, and academic and practising statisticians.
