This is the first book that probes the lived experiences of Chinese
immigrant faculty in North American higher education institutions:
their struggles, challenges, successes, etc. It explores how their
past experiences in China have shaped who they are now, what they
do and how they pursue their teaching, research, and service, as
well as the reality of their everyday life that inevitably
intertwines with their present and past diverse cultural
backgrounds and unique experiences. Different from previous books
that explore immigrant/minority faculty defined ambiguously and
broadly and from the theoretical framework of ethnic relations,
this book has a particular focus on mainland Chinese immigrant
faculty, which offers a richer and deeper understanding of their
cross-culture experiences through autoethnographic research and by
multiple lenses. Through authors' vivid portray of the ebbs and
flows of their life in the academe, readers will gain an enjoyable
and holistic knowledge of the cultural, political, linguistic,
scholarly, and personal issues contemporary Chinese immigrant
faculty encounter as they cross the border of multiple worlds. All
contributors to this book had the experience of being the
first-generation Chinese immigrants, and they either are currently
teaching or used to teach in North American higher education
institutions, who were born, brought up, educated in Mainland China
and came to North America for graduate degrees from early 1980s to
2000.
Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive
technique for imaging the microvasculature of the retina and the
choroid. The advent of OCTA has allowed ophthalmologists to
identify new pathologies, recognise new syndromes, and organise
disorders with new classifications. This atlas provides clinicians
with state-of-the-art principles of clinical OCTA imaging, helping
them interpret and understand the features of the angiographic
images. Following the success of the first edition (9789351528999)
published in 2015, this second edition has been fully revised, with
all chapters rewritten and new topics added to provide the very
latest advances in the field. New knowledge about existing diseases
and new disorders are described in depth, and operating principles,
clinical applications, and future developments are explained
thoroughly by the pioneers of the technology. The first part of the
atlas covers the basic principles of OCT angiography, methods and
technology, image interpretation, vascular anatomy of the retina,
and clinical applications. Part two provides a general update on
current research into OCT angiography in various retinal, choroid
and anterior chamber disorders. The third and final part of the
book describes future clinical applications and implications of
next generation devices. This new edition is an invaluable guide
for ophthalmologists and trainees for use in everyday practice.
This handbook provides ophthalmologists and trainees with the
latest advances in the rapidly developing field of OCT Angiography.

This book focuses on the literacy beliefs and practices of parents
and children from Asian and Latinx heritage backgrounds. In the US,
children from Asian and Latinx immigrant backgrounds represent the
largest population of dual language learners in schools. While
existing research has paid significant attention to the roles of
parenting and the home literacy environment on children's literacy
development, relatively little attention has been allocated to
immigrant families. Chapters aim to meet the need in the field to
understand the roles of culture and immigrant experiences on
children's literacy learning and development, including immigrant
families' home environments and parents' involvement in
literacy-related activities in both English and the parents' native
language. As Hispanic/Latinx and Asian American populations grow in
the US, this book answers an urgent call for school systems and
child and family professionals to be aware of issues in this area
and how to address them in culturally responsive ways.
The book describes the clean coal technology of chemical looping
combustion (CLC) for power generation with pure CO2 capture. The
focus of the book is on the modeling and simulation of CLC. It
includes fundamental concepts behind CLC and considers all
categories of fluidized beds and reactors including a variety of
oxygen carriers. The book includes process simulations with Aspen
PlusÂŽ software using coal, natural gas, and biomass as well as
computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using both the
Eulerian and Lagrangian methods. It describes various drag models,
turbulence models, and kinetics models required for CFD simulations
of CLC and covers single reactor, partial, and full-simulations,
single/multi-stage as well as single-particle simulations, and CLC
with reverse flow. A large number of examples for both process
simulations using Aspen Plus and CFD simulations using a variety of
fluidized beds/reactors employing both the two-fluid and
Computational Fluid Dynamics / Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM)
model are provided. Modeling and Simulation of Fluidized Bed
Reactors for Chemical Looping Combustion will be an invaluable
reference for industry practitioners and researchers in academic
and industrial R&D currently working on clean energy
technologies and power generation with carbon capture.
Healing Multicultural America (1993) looks at a group of Mexican
immigrants who managed to understand and use the US democratic
system to gain access to the 'American Dream'. The book aims to
assist its readers to understand the significance of the politics
of education for ethnic minorities. The authors point up the
gravity of the problems experienced by minority groups worldwide
which cannot be underestimated: problems such as inter-ethnic
conflict, cultural tensions, poverty, alienation, violence and
self-rejection.

Selected by Amaud Jamaul Johnson for the 2023 Jake Adam York Prize,
Yalie Saweda Kamaraâs Besaydoo is an elegantly wrought love song
to homeâas place, as people, as body, and as language. A griot is
a historian, a living repository of communal legacies with âa
story pulsing in every blood cell.â In Besaydoo, Kamara serves as
griot for the Freeborn in Oakland, the Sierra Leonean in
California, the girl straddling womanhood, the woman re-discovering
herself. âI am made from the obsession of detail,â she writes,
setting scenes from her own multifaceted legacy in sharp relief:
the memory of her motherâs singing, savory stacks of lumpia, a
church where âeveryone is broken, but trying.â A multitudinous
witness. Â Kamara psalms from the nexus of many
languagesâKrio, English, French, poetryâs many dialectsâto
highlight mechanisms not just for survival, but for abundance. âI
make myth for peace,â she writes, as well as for loss, for
delight, for kinship, and most of all for a country where Black
means âsteadfast and opulent,â and âdangerous and
infinite.â She writes for a new America, where praise is
plentiful and Black lives flourish. But in Besaydoo, there is no
partition between the living and the dead. There is no past nor
present. There is, instead, a joyful simultaneityâa liberating
togetherness sustained by song.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) angiography is an important new
imaging modality that is already being used by ophthalmologists in
retina centers worldwide. It uses motion as intrinsic contrast,
thus obviating the need to inject any intravenous dye. It uses
infrared light that is invisible to the patient, and only requires
few seconds per scan. This makes it both easier to use and much
better tolerated by patients than traditional dye-based fluorescein
angiography (FA) and indocyanine green (ICG) angiography. Inside
Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography of the Eye Drs. David
Huang, Bruno Lumbroso, Yali Jia, and Nadia Waheed include detailed
information on clinical applications and fundamental principles
needed to understand and use this new technology. This includes
information on high-speed OCT systems, algorithms to extract flow
contrast, the appearance of the normal eye, the findings in myriad
diseases, and tips on how to deal with artifact and pitfalls. The
3-dimensional nature of OCT angiography provides visualization that
was not possible before with either FA or ICG and readers will come
to appreciate how this enables the visualization of previously
difficult to image vascular beds such as the 4 retinal vascular
plexuses (radial peripapillary, superficial, intermediate, and
deep), the choriocapillaris, and the deeper choroidal vessels.
Given its noninvasive nature and ease of use, OCT angiography
imaging is rapidly taking an important place in everyday
ophthalmology and may soon replace fluorescein angiography in
everyday practice. Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography of the
Eye is designed to be the definitive text on this cutting-edge
technology for the retina specialist and comprehensive
ophthalmologist.
Universities are facing budget crises and growing competition, with
many leaders clinging to older methods of leadership. This results
in institutions with unprecedented deficits, decreased enrolments,
and low graduation rates. What tools are necessary to succeed in
the ever-changing and diversifying higher education market? In this
book, the authors provide a model for leading universities in
rapidly changing environments. Using the University of Houston as
their case study, examining the institution's explosive growth
under the transformative leadership of President Renu Khator and
her team. The President's success in the realms of fundraising,
organizational architecture, development, crisis management, and
building campus culture are all facets of a revolutionary
leadership model that can be replicated as a new style of academic
governance. Transformational University Leadership presents a model
of leadership for higher education institutions in the 21st
century. With a special focus on gender and culture, the authors
explore the leadership tactics and strategies university presidents
use to uplift the University from a regional campus to a tier 1
research powerhouse. Offering strategies, anecdotes, and
transferable methods for university leaders seeking to elevate
their institution and thrive in the 21st century academic market.
The ethnographic experience is an indelible venture that
continuously redefines one's life. Bringing together important
cross-currents in the national debate on education, this book
introduces the student or practitioner to the challenges,
resources, and skills informing ethnographic research today. From
the first chapter describing the cultural foundations of
ethnographic research, by George Spindler, the book traces both
traditional and new approaches to the study of schools and their
communities. Emphasis on discourse, critical pedagogy, and
ethnicity are among the many aspects of methodology and educational
change emphasized by the contributors.

Verhandlungsprozessen rassifizierende Mechanismen unterworfen
Text in English and German. The architect and photographer Rolf
Reiner Maria Borchard, who is professor of design principles at the
Muthesius-Hochschule in Kiel, has chosen seven of the most
beautiful gardens and photographed them during several trips,
always in spring, in other words at a time when the garden
architecture has not yet been overwhelmed by the vegetation, and so
can make the best possible impact in the image. His trained eye for
the way architecture is embedded in the landscape means that he has
found striking and convincing images, steeped in the harmony of the
gardens.
