According to the Autoimmune Diseases Coordinating Committee (ADCC), between 14.7 and 23.5 million people in the USA - up to eight percent of the population are affected by autoimmune disease. Autoimmune diseases are a family of more than 100 chronic, and often disabling, illnesses that develop when underlying defects in the immune system lead the body to attack its own organs, tissues, and cells. In Handbook of Autoimmune Disease, the editors have gathered in a comprehensive handbook a critical review, by renowned experts, of more than 100 autoimmune diseases, divided into two main groups, namely systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases. A contemporary overview of these conditions with special emphasis on diagnosis is presented. Each chapter contains the essential information required by attending physicians as well as bench scientists to understand the definition of a specific autoimmune disease, the diagnostic criteria, and the treatment.

Autoimmunity, COVID-19, Post-COVID-19 Syndrome and COVID-19 Vaccination covers all aspects of what is perhaps the most dramatic health crisis in the history of modern medicine. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) raised major concerns about the association between the virus and various autoimmune manifestations. Over 15 distinct autoantibodies and above 10 different autoimmune diseases were found to develop in COVID-19 patients. Moreover, evidence about recovered COVID-19 patients demonstrates that persistent systemic symptoms, which are believed to have an autoimmune-related mechanism, do exist. As it is of great importance to recognize those autoimmune manifestations of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 syndrome to properly cope with their outcomes in the ongoing pandemic and the long-term post-pandemic period, this book fulfills a vital need in the medical community.
In 2020 we lost Noel Rose, co-editor of the classic Infection and Autoimmunity. To honor and respect his work, a group of experts in the field have taken the initiative to make this book perpetual. The third edition of Infection and Autoimmunity updates all the recent and leading papers on infection and autoimmunity, in addition to a dedicated section on to the correlation between SARS-CoV-2 infection and autoimmunity. From the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, numerous papers have been published, including studies conducted by the editors and authors of the book, on COVID-19 and autoimmunity, and therefore this knowledge has been incorporated into this new edition. The addition and extended coverage on SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 and autoimmunity are pivotal for the third edition of the book due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical students and practitioners, as well as academic staff in medical schools globally, are enthusiastic in searching for better understanding of the correlation between infection and autoimmunity in general, and the long-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 on the immunce system in particular, especially in terms of autoimmunity related to the virus.
The Mosaic of Autoimmunity: The Novel Factors of Autoimmune Diseases describes the multifactorial origin and diversity of expression of autoimmune diseases in humans. The term implies that different combinations of factors in autoimmunity produce varying and unique clinical pictures in a wide spectrum of autoimmune diseases. Most of the factors involved in autoimmunity can be categorized into four groups: genetic, immune defects, hormonal and environmental factors. In this book, the environmental factors are reviewed, including infectious agents, vaccines as triggers of autoimmunity, smoking and its relationship with rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, thyroid disease, multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel diseases. An entirely new syndrome, the autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA), is also included, along with other diseases that are now recognized as having an autoimmune etiopathogenesis.
Autoimmune diseases are characterized by the occurrence of antibodies reacting with self-constituents of the body. The fully updated third edition of "Autoantibodies" is an in-depth review of the main autoantibodies identified up to now, with particular emphasis on those that display a diagnostic or prognostic clinical value. The new edition covers recent scientific advances, diagnostic
techniques, and therapeutic technologies. Each chapter is focused
on a single family of autoantibodies. This important reference
contains historical notes, definitions, origins and sources of
antigens recognized genetic associations, mediated pathogenic
mechanisms, methods of detection, as well as clinical utility
(disease prevalence and association, diagnostic value, sensitivity
and specificity, prognostic value). This is an ideal reference for
anyone involved in the field of autoimmune diseases.
Autoimmune diseases are conditions where the immune system attacks the body organs instead of foreign invaders. This book deals with the various mechanisms by which infectious agents can trigger autoimmunity such as molecular mimicry and polyclonal activation. An overview is given with regard to bacteria, viruses, and parasites associated with autoimmunity, and a summary is given on classical autoimmune diseases and the infecting agents that can induce them.
This volume features key presentations from the 6th International Congress of Autoimmunity. The International Congress of Autoimmunity has become established as one of the major meetings in the field of immunology, with presentations covering every aspect of basic research in the hopes of clarifying pathogenesis of autoimmune disease as well as providing information on the latest innovations in biological and other modes of treatment. The goal of this volume is to present cutting edge research that focuses in particular on newer diagnostic tools and newer therapies for human autoimmune disease. The incidence of autoimmune diseases is increasing worldwide, and
the search for better management of these diseases and even for a
cure is being pursued by scientists from many disciplines. Tools
from the areas of genetics, neuroscience, cell biology, virology,
and infectious disease are being applied to the problem and are
yielding useful results. This is the second volume of a series of four on autoimmunity,
and findings related to particular organs, organ systems, and
diseases are presented. The focus in Part B is on genetics and
advances in treatment. Part A presents new principles in
autoimmunity and new diagnostic tools. See Parts C and D for
clinical venues in autoimmunity. "NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books
