Cancer Bioinformatics (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Ying Xu, Juan Cui, David Puett Cancer Bioinformatics (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Ying Xu, Juan Cui, David Puett
R2,994 R2,100 Discovery Miles 21 000 Save R894 (30%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a framework for computational researchers studying the basics of cancer through comparative analyses of omic data. It discusses how key cancer pathways can be analyzed and discovered to derive new insights into the disease and identifies diagnostic and prognostic markers for cancer. Chapters explain the basic cancer biology and how cancer develops, including the many potential survival routes. The examination of gene-expression patterns uncovers commonalities across multiple cancers and specific characteristics of individual cancer types. The authors also treat cancer as an evolving complex system, explore future case studies, and summarize the essential online data sources. Cancer Bioinformatics is designed for practitioners and researchers working in cancer research and bioinformatics. It is also suitable as a secondary textbook for advanced-level students studying computer science, biostatistics or biomedicine.

PDEs are a family of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of intracellular cyclic nucleotides. They are implicated in a number of disorders and dysfunctions and PDE inhibitors have already proven to be effective therapies for erectile dysfunction, COPD, and psoriatic arthritis. This family of enzymes also plays a role in diseases and disorders of the CNS such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and Alzheimer's Disease. Unfortunately no effective PDE inhibitors have been developed for the treatment of these diseases. The proposed book will be a comprehensive overview of the current state of basic and translational research on PDE inhibitors written by internationally recognized experts. Authors will also discuss potential PDE subtypes and splice variants in the hopes that this will spur more creative approaches to PDE targeting drugs.

Computational Methods for Protein Structure Prediction and Modeling - Volume 2: Structure Prediction (Hardcover, 2007 ed.):... Computational Methods for Protein Structure Prediction and Modeling - Volume 2: Structure Prediction (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Ying Xu, Dong Xu, Jie Liang
R4,334 Discovery Miles 43 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Volume Two of this two-volume sequence presents a comprehensive overview of protein structure prediction methods and includes protein threading, De novo methods, applications to membrane proteins and protein complexes, structure-based drug design, as well as structure prediction as a systems problem. A series of appendices review the biological and chemical basics related to protein structure, computer science for structural informatics, and prerequisite mathematics and statistics.

Ying Xu, Dong Xu, Jie Liang
R4,349 Discovery Miles 43 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Volume One of this two-volume sequence focuses on the basic characterization of known protein structures, and structure prediction from protein sequence information. Eleven chapters survey of the field, covering key topics in modeling, force fields, classification, computational methods, and structure prediction. Each chapter is a self contained review covering definition of the problem and historical perspective; mathematical formulation; computational methods and algorithms; performance results; existing software; strengths, pitfalls, challenges, and future research.

Rebalancing Economies in Financially Integrating East Asia (Paperback): Jenny Corbett, Ying Xu Rebalancing Economies in Financially Integrating East Asia (Paperback)
Jenny Corbett, Ying Xu
R1,277 Discovery Miles 12 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the Asian Financial Crisis (AFC) of 1997-98 large current account surpluses have accumulated in the countries of Asia and the Pacific with corresponding deficits elsewhere. The sharp plunge in global trade volumes during the global financial crisis has highlighted the need for 'rebalancing'-focussing more on domestic sources of economic growth than on exports in some Asian economies. One key objective of the book is to elucidate the economic structures and policies that give rise to current account surpluses and imbalances and consider what policy adjustments could change them. Another objective is to show the link between financial systems, financial integration and the transmission of economic shocks between countries. The book offers new dimensions to understand 'rebalancing' and provides alternative and arguably more fundamental solutions to address imbalances. Rather than focusing on exchange rate misalignment, this book begins from the premise that the imbalances are a macroeconomic problem that reflects a mismatch between savings and investment in the surplus countries. Then, it examines exchange rate policies adopted by countries in the region and finds that part of the explanation for their currency strategy lies in their perceived need to build foreign exchange reserves to provide a buffer in case of instabilities. The book examines whether there are other possibilities for countries to insure against economic volatility by more actively and openly engaging with international capital markets. The studies show that closer financial integration, involving more open financial markets, with well-chosen partners, would be welfare-improving and should reduce the need for the counter-productive, self-insurance policies that result in foreign exchange accumulation.
