Hawkes processes are studied and used in a wide range of disciplines: mathematics, social sciences, and earthquake modelling, to name a few. This book presents a selective coverage of the core and recent topics in the broad field of Hawkes processes. It consists of three parts. Parts I and II summarise and provide an overview of core theory (including key simulation methods) and inference methods, complemented by a selection of recent research developments and applications. Part III is devoted to case studies in seismology and finance that connect the core theory and inference methods to practical scenarios. This book is designed primarily for applied probabilists, statisticians, and machine learners. However, the mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum so that the content will also be of interest to undergraduates in advanced mathematics and statistics, as well as machine learning practitioners. Knowledge of matrix theory with basics of probability theory, including Poisson processes, is considered a prerequisite. Colour-blind-friendly illustrations are included.

This book examines the nature of everyday peace mobilised in post-conflict settings. It specifically aims to examine the reconstruction of relationships between local communities and former Khmer Rouge leaders in Cambodia, using social reconciliation as an indicator of peace. In this volume various integral equations for multiple crack problems in plane elasticity are investigated. Formulation of the problems is based on relevant elementary solutions in which the complex variable function method is used. The multiple crack problem is considered as a superposition of many single crack problems while many more complicated cases, including bonded dissimilar materials and multiple thermally insulated crack problems, are considered. Miscellaneous problems, including the multiple rigid line problem and the multiple circular hole problem are studied. Solutions for three-dimensional multiple crack problems are also investigated by using the Fredholm integral equation, the hypersingular integral equation and the variational principle. Many programs for multiple crack problems using FORTRAN are featured. A CD-ROM containing solutions is also included.

Li-Young Lee burst onto the American literary scene with the publication of "Rose," winner of the 1986 Delmore Schwartz Memorial Poetry Award from The Poetry Society of America. He followed that astonishing book with "The City in Which I Love You," which was The Lamont Poetry Selection of The Academy of American Poets. Mr. Lee has appeared on National Public Radio a number of times and "The Power of the Word," the PBS television series with Bill Moyers. "Rose" and "The City in Which I Love You" are in the 19th and 17th printings respectively, making them two of the highest-selling contemporary poetry books in the United States. Moreover, Mr. Lee's poems have been translated into more than a dozen languages. He currently lives in Chicago.

This study primarily explores whether conflicts between patents and human rights in the context of access to medicines are inevitable, or whether patents can be made to serve human rights. The author argues that it is necessary to have a deepened understanding of each of the two sets of norms that govern this issue, that is, patent law and international human rights law. The chapters investigate the relevant dimensions of patent law and analyse particular human rights bearing upon the issue of intellectual property and access to medicines.

Why has the United States established a new technology transfer regime, and how does it actually perform? Lee and his contributors see it as a set of new game rules in which government, industry, and the academic community are allowed--authorized, in fact--to interact and collaborate toward the goal of successful technological innovation. Their book--thus far unique in its field--reports on the empirical research that examines how various independent components of the system interact and collaborate. In doing so the authors provide data and information on which policy assumptions are valid and which aren't, which rules are helpful and which are hindrances, and how the various players in this game assess its future. Lee and the contributors point out that as technologies grow in complexity, companies often target their internal resources on core competencies and utilize outside sources for supporting knowledge or technology. As universities step into the marketplace, trying to make money through aggressive commercialization of their intellectual property, they face conflict of interest problems within their walls, as well as complex and often unfathomable intellectual property negotiations with the corporations with whom they deal. Their third major point is that with declining R&D budgets but increasingly tough competition, American faculty members are troubled by the collision of two powerful but not necessarily complementary motives: the need for external funding for research and the need to preserve academic freedom and intellectual autonomy. This book traces the development of U.S-led global nuclear non-proliferation diplomacy during the three decades since the Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace� in 1953. The U.S. non-proliferation efforts had diverse obstacles. It had to prevent nuclear states’ export of nuclear technology while dissuading non-nuclear states from developing nuclear weapons. In addition, building non-proliferation regime was not always its top foreign policy priority. To understand the complex process of non-proliferation, the book examines the relations among three different actors in the nuclear field: a global non-proliferation regime builder (U.S.), a potential nuclear proliferator (France) and a would-be nuclear state (Republic of Korea). In tracing how they developed nuclear strategies, conflicting and compromising with one another, the book pays special attention to how the transforming Cold War structure in the 1970s not only affected foreign policies of the involved countries but also complicated their relationship. The exploration ultimately highlights the multidimensional nature of international discussion on nuclear non-proliferation as the ROK’s nuclear development attempts, U.S. non-proliferation efforts, and the U.S.-France nuclear technology cooperation in the 1970s were all deeply connected. 

This book examines how local agencies in Cambodia and Mindanao (the Philippines) have developed their own models of peacebuilding under the strong influence and advocacy of external intervention. It identifies four distinct patterns in the development of local peacebuilders' ownership: ownership inheritance from external advocates, management of external reliance, friction-avoiding approaches, and utilisation of religious/traditional leadership. This book then analyses each pattern, focusing on its operational features, its significance and limitations as a local peacebuilding model. This study makes theoretical contributions to the academic debates on the 'local turn', local ownership, hybrid peace and everyday peace.
