Multilevel Analysis of Individuals and Cultures (Paperback): Fons J.R. van de Vijver, Dianne A. Van Hemert, Ype H. Poortinga Multilevel Analysis of Individuals and Cultures (Paperback)
Fons J.R. van de Vijver, Dianne A. Van Hemert, Ype H. Poortinga
R1,892 Discovery Miles 18 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this book, top specialists address theoretical, methodological, and empirical multilevel models as they relate to the analysis of individual and cultural data. Divided into four parts, the book opens with the basic conceptual and theoretical issues in multilevel research, including the fallacies of such research. Part II describes the methodological aspects of multilevel research, including data-analytic and structural equation modeling techniques. Applications and models from various research areas including control, values, organizational behavior, social beliefs, well-being, personality, response styles, school performance, family, and acculturation, are explored in Part III. This section also deals with validity issues in aggregation models. The book concludes with an overview of the kinds of questions addressed in multilevel models and highlights the theoretical and methodological issues yet to be explored.

This book is intended for researchers and advanced students in psychology, sociology, social work, marriage and family therapy, public health, anthropology, education, economics, political science, and cultural and ethnic studies who study the relationship between behavior and culture.

Concept and Method in Cross-Cultural and Cultural Psychology (Paperback, New Ed): Ype H. Poortinga Concept and Method in Cross-Cultural and Cultural Psychology (Paperback, New Ed)
Ype H. Poortinga
R556 Discovery Miles 5 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An overview is given of cross-cultural psychology and cultural psychology, focusing on theory and methodology. In Section 1 historical developments in research are traced; it is found that initially extensive psychological differences tend to shrink when more carefully designed studies are conducted. Section 2 addresses the conceptualization of "culture" and of "a culture". For psychological research the notion "culture" is considered too vague; more focal explanatory concepts are required. Section 3 describes methodological issues, taking the notion of the empirical cycle as a lead for both qualitative and quantitative research. Pitfalls in research design and data analysis of behavior-comparative studies, and the need for replication are discussed. Section 4 suggests to move beyond research on causal relationships and to incorporate additional questions, addressing the function and the development of behavior patterns in ontogenetic, phylogenetic and historical time. Section 5 emphasizes the need for applied research serving the global village.

James Georgas, John W Berry, Fons J.R. van de Vijver, Cigdem Kagitcibasi, Ype H. Poortinga
R4,005 Discovery Miles 40 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contemporary trends such as increased one-parent families, high divorce rates, second marriages and homosexual partnerships have all contributed to variations in the traditional family structure. But to what degree has the function of the family changed and how have these changes affected family roles in cultures throughout the world? This book attempts to answer these questions through a psychological study of families in thirty nations, carefully selected to present a diverse cultural mix. The study utilises both cross-cultural and indigenous perspectives to analyse variables including family networks, family roles, emotional bonds, personality traits, self-construal, and 'family portraits' in which the authors address common core themes of the family as they apply to their native countries. From the introductory history of the study of the family to the concluding indigenous psychological analysis of the family, this book is a unique source for students and researchers in psychology, sociology and anthropology.

Between Culture and Biology - Perspectives on Ontogenetic Development (Hardcover): Heidi Keller, Ype H. Poortinga, Axel... Between Culture and Biology - Perspectives on Ontogenetic Development (Hardcover)
Heidi Keller, Ype H. Poortinga, Axel Schoelmerich
R3,390 Discovery Miles 33 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Breaking away from the traditional nature/nurture dialectic, this study brings together biological, psychological and cultural perspectives on development. It asserts that the biological bases of behavior and cultural context should be approached in an integrated fashion to properly understand ontogenetic development and the constraints and opportunities for development. It also examines influences on developmental theory and the extent to which cultural ideas and practices reflect biological and psychological constraints.

EuroPsy - Standards and Quality in Education for Professional Psychologists (Paperback): Ingrid Lunt, Jose Maria Peiro, Ype H.... EuroPsy - Standards and Quality in Education for Professional Psychologists (Paperback)
Ingrid Lunt, Jose Maria Peiro, Ype H. Poortinga
R686 Discovery Miles 6 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

EuroPsy has been accepted and adopted as the European standard for education and training in psychology by EFPA. This book, written by its initiator and leading members of the working groups that set EuroPsy up, is the only comprehensive text available about this European benchmark. It first reviews the development of EuroPsy in the historical context of psychology as science and profession and policies for higher education set by international bodies, and in particular the European Union. This handbook then goes on to address the curricula of university courses and programmes following from the Bologna Agreement, the flexibility allowed to reflect diversity in Europe, licencing and accreditation, and benchmarking, as well as other prerequisites for meeting the EuroPsy standards. These include the use of a competence model to assure professional standards, supervision, continued professional development, supervision, and ethics. Finally, the authors examine the current and future role of EuroPsy in psychology in Europe, including practical examples of how EuroPsy has been applied in practice.
