Image and video coding is one of the most important areas in source coding (also known as data compression). In the last decades, a wide range of multimedia applications and services have become an integral part of the industries, from mobile communications to Internet broadcasting, and entertainment to consumer electronics. In the coming decades, media services will tend to be delivered at better qualities, lower or acceptable complexities, and still lower bit rates by efficient future codecs than occurs today. Over the past decades, a tremendous effort has been put into the research to develop advanced system for video communications over wireless and Internet channels.
