“…[A] compelling history of our city’s last half century, as conveyed through the life of one of our most impactful leaders. …†— Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass This is the story of Zev Yaroslavsky, the son of Ukrainian Jews who immigrated to the United States in the early 1920s. His memoir charts the journey of a young social activist who battled to free Soviet Jews before becoming one of the most consequential elected officials in Southern California. Fiercely independent, he combined an activist’s passion with a seasoned politician’s skill to challenge the region’s power brokers. He fought the Los Angeles Police Department’s excessive force and political spying policies, led the effort to ban local taxes from funding the 1984 Olympics, teamed with President Clinton to avert a catastrophic county bankruptcy, helped develop L.A.’s modern transit system, won a bruising battle with real estate interests to save the Santa Monica Mountains from rapacious development, and was pivotal in the development of Walt Disney Concert Hall and the modernization of the iconic Hollywood Bowl.  “I may be part of the establishment,†he said on the day he was first sworn into office, “but the establishment is not part of me.â€Â Â

The central theme of the book is the relationship between a hero or cultural icon and the cultures in which he or she is venerated. On one hand, a hero cannot remain a static character if he or she is to appeal to diverse and dynamic communities. On the other hand, a traditional icon should retain some basic features in order to remain recognizable. Joshua son of Nun is an iconic figure of Israelite cultural memory described at length in the Hebrew Bible and venerated in numerous religious traditions. This book uses Joshua as a test case. It tackles reception and redaction history, focusing on the use and development of Joshua's character and the deployment of his various images in the narratives and texts of several religious traditions. I look for continuities and discontinuities between traditions, as well as cross-pollination and polemic. The first two chapters look at Joshua's portrayal in biblical literature, using both synchronic (literary analysis) as well as diachronic (UEberlieferungsgeschichte and redaction/source criticism) methodologies. The other four chapters focus on the reception history of Joshua in Second Temple and Hellenistic Jewish literature, in the medieval (Arabic) Samaritan Book of Joshua, in the New Testament and Church Fathers, and in Rabbinic literature.

Aerosol Pollution Impact on Precipitation - A Scientific Review (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Zev Levin, William R. Cotton Aerosol Pollution Impact on Precipitation - A Scientific Review (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)

Life on Earth is critically dependent upon the continuous cycling of water between oceans, continents and the atmosphere. Precipitation (including rain, snow, and hail) is the primary mechanism for transporting water from the atmosphere back to the Earth s surface. It is also the key physical process that links aspects of climate, weather, and the global hydrological cycle. Changes in precipitation regimes and the frequency of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, severe ice/snow storms, monsoon fluctuations and hurricanes are of great potential importance to life on the planet. One of the factors that could contribute to precipitation modification is aerosol pollution from various sources such as urban air pollution and biomass burning. Natural and anthropogenic changes in atmospheric aerosols might have important implications for precipitation by influencing the hydrological cycle, which in turn could feed back to climate changes.

From an Earth Science perspective, a key question is how changes expected in climate will translate into changes in the hydrological cycle, and what trends may be expected in the future. We require a much better understanding and hence predictive capability of the moisture and energy storages and exchanges among the Earth s atmosphere, oceans, continents and biological systems. This book is a review of our knowledge of the relationship between aerosols and precipitation reaching the Earth's surface and it includes a list of recommendations that could help to advance our knowledge in this area."

Based on a unique research study, this volume examines the later life development of Holocaust survivors from Israel and the US. Through systematic interviews, the authors a" noted researchers and clinicians a" collected data about the lives of these survivors and how they compared to peers who did not share this experience. The orientation of the book synthesizes several conceptual approaches a" gerontological and life span development, stress research, and traumatology, and also reflects the varied disciplines of the authors, spanning psychology, social work, and sociology. The result is a multi-faceted view of their subject with an understanding of the individual, society, and the interaction of the two, tempered by the authorsa (TM) own Holocaust experiences. Chapters cover a range of areas including stress and coping of these survivors, reviews of their heath and mental health, an examination of their social integration, as well as a review of the multiple predictors of psychological well-being and adaptation to aging. This book will be of interest to psychologists, social workers, sociologists, psychiatrists, and all those who study both trauma and aging.

This book is one additional indication that a new field of study is emerging within the social sciences, if it has not emerged already. Here is a sampling of the fruit of a field whose roots can be traced to the earliest medical writings in Kahun Papyrus in 1900 B.C. In this document, according to Ilza Veith, the earliest medical scholars described what was later identified as hysteria. This description was long before the 1870s and 1880s when Char cot speculated on the etiology of hysteria and well before the first use of the term traumatic neurosis at the turn of this Century. Traumatic stress studies is the investigation of the immediate and long-term psychosocial consequences of highly stressful events and the factors that affect those consequences. This definition includes three primary elements: event, conse quences, and causal factors affecting the perception of both. This collection of papers addresses all three elements and collectively contributes to our understanding and appreciation of the struggles of those who have en dured so much, often with little recognition of their experiences."

Development and Perspectives of Landscape Ecology (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): O. Bastian Development and Perspectives of Landscape Ecology (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
O. Bastian; Foreword by Zev Naveh; Edited by Uta Steinhardt
R6,374 Discovery Miles 63 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Development and status of landscape ecology - subject of this book During the last decades, landscape ecology has developed tremendously. It concerns both the theoretical basis and practical application. The roots of landscape ecology are geography and biology. The term "landscape ecology" was first coined by the German scientist Carl Troll in 1939. unce, the devel opment center of landscape ecology was in Central Europe. Recently, also other parts of the world became powernd centers of landscape ecology, es pecially Northern America. American approaches partly differ essentially from the European, because they are focused esp. on biogeography and population dynamics. In Europe, however, the geographical roots of land scape ecology playamajor role. Landscape is defined as a complex of abiotic, biotic and human components. Mainly due to linguistic barriers, the international discussion does not take notice of approaches and experiences from non-anglophone countries in a sufficient manner. Therefore this book considers more the German and European views on landscape ecology than the books which were published before. It tries to bridge the gaps between theory and practice of landscape ecology, as well between the Ger manlEuropean and American approach es. The book gives a fundamental representation of landscape ecology, which proves to be a young, but an interesting and very important transdisci plinary science for the solution of environmental problems. Both the theo retical basis and practical application of landscape ecology are considered."

Klezmer - Music, History, and Memory (Hardcover): Walter Zev Feldman Klezmer - Music, History, and Memory (Hardcover)
Walter Zev Feldman
R2,388 Discovery Miles 23 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory is the first comprehensive study of the musical structure and social history of klezmer music, the music of the Jewish musicians' guild of Eastern Europe. Emerging in 16th century Prague, the klezmer became a central cultural feature of the largest transnational Jewish community of modern times - the Ashkenazim of Eastern Europe. Much of the musical and choreographic history of the Ashkenazim is embedded in the klezmer repertoire, which functioned as a kind of non-verbal communal memory. The complex of speech, dance, and musical gesture is deeply rooted in Jewish expressive culture, and reached its highest development in Eastern Europe. Klezmer: Music, History, and Memory reveals the artistic transformations of the liturgy of the Ashkenazic synagogue in klezmer wedding melodies, and presents the most extended study available in any language of the relationship of Jewish dance to the rich and varied klezmer music of Eastern Europe. Author Walter Zev Feldman expertly examines the major sources principally in Russian, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Romanian from the 16th to the 20th centuries, including interviews with authoritative European-born klezmorim conducted over a period of more than thirty years in America, Eastern Europe, and Israel. In its musical analysis, this book draws upon the foundational collections of the late Tsarist and early Soviet periods, plus rare cantorial and klezmer manuscripts from the late 18th to the early 20th centuries.

Labor and Employment Law Initiatives and Proposals Under the Obama Administration - Proceedings of the New York University 62nd... Labor and Employment Law Initiatives and Proposals Under the Obama Administration - Proceedings of the New York University 62nd Annual Conference on Labor (Hardcover)
Zev. J. Eigen, Samuel Estreicher
R6,576 Discovery Miles 65 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Barack Obama's famous Blueprint for Change,A" part and parcel of the campaign that culminated in his historic election as U.S. president in November 2008, openly announced his support for the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 1409) suggesting that major change was imminent in U.S. labor and employment law. Although promised legislative change has yet to materialize, there appears to be a growing consensus that the current system for addressing employment disputes in union-represented and non-union workplaces deserves renewed attention and needs significant restructuring. Thus, the issues taken up by this prominent U.S. conference remain relevant to policy debates which will likely continue to rage in the United States for years to come. Based on papers delivered at the 2009 conference of the New York University School of Law's Center on Labor and Employment Law - the 62nd in this venerable and highly influential series - the book presents articles updated by the authors to reflect more recent developments, as well as new papers to ensure a comprehensive and current analysis of both what has actually changed and which trends seem to be gaining momentum. Twenty-two outstanding scholars and practitioners in U.S. labor law and practice pay special attention to such issues as the following: * mandatory arbitration of employment disputes in non-union sector; * call for improved administration of the National Labor Relations Act in expediting elections and reinstating discriminatees; * more privatized forms of dispute resolution such as arbitration and mediation; * card-check and neutrality agreements bypassing government processes; * proposed reform of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act; * evaluating market-based defenses to pay equity claims; * EEOC initiatives in public enforcement of equality law; and * challenges to labor relations in state and local governments. . As always, this important annual publication offers definitive current scholarship in its theme area of labor and employment law. As such, it will be of inestimable value to practitioners, government officials, academics, and others interested in developments in U.S. employment and labor relations law and practice.

Making Citizens - Rousseau's Political Theory of Culture (Paperback): Zev M Trachtenberg Making Citizens - Rousseau's Political Theory of Culture (Paperback)
Zev M Trachtenberg
R1,722 Discovery Miles 17 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

By analysing Rousseau's conception of the general will, Zev Trachtenberg characterises the attitude of civic virtue Rousseau believes individuals must have to cooperate successfully in society. Rousseau holds that culture affects political life by either fostering or discouraging civic virtue. However, while the cultural institutions Rousseau endorses would motivate citizens to obey the law, they would not prepare citizens to help frame it. Rousseau's view of culture thus works against his account of legitimacy, and Trachtenberg concludes that Rousseau's political theory as a whole is inconsistent.

Torah For Today (Paperback): Ester R Taus Torah For Today (Paperback)
Ester R Taus; Foreword by Zev Garber
R1,233 Discovery Miles 12 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Torah for Today is composed of a series of articles written by Esther Taus for the monthly Temple publication, the Bulletin. Compiled over 22 years of writing, this work deals with the practical application of biblical principles and contemporary concerns. The essays are both informative and challenging. They mediate between the technical world of contemporary religious scholarship and the everyday reality of ethical decisions and piety. The order of presentation of the essays follows the reading program of Reform Judaism, which starts with the High Holy Days (usually in September), and continues for a twelve-month study of the Pentateuch (Bible). Every year different sections of the Bible are studied, and the cycle is repeated. While the book addresses primarily secular readers, people of all faiths and backgrounds are encouraged to discover, or re-discover, the understanding of religions through this extensive analysis of Judaism.

Our Only Hope - Eddie's Holocaust Story and the Weisz Family Correspondence (Paperback): Keith H. Pickus Our Only Hope - Eddie's Holocaust Story and the Weisz Family Correspondence (Paperback)
Keith H. Pickus; Edited by Zev Garber
R1,010 Discovery Miles 10 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Our Only Hope is based on correspondence between Eddie Weisz, a German Jew who emigrated to the U.S. in 1938, and his family (father, mother, and brother) who remained behind, first in Berlin and then Prague. Like many German Jewish families, Eddie's parents sent their eldest child to America hoping that he could pave the way for the rest of the family to follow. The story is a deeply personal account of how the Nazi phenomenon affected a single family. It gives voice to victims of the Holocaust, people whose experiences are typically told through the eyes of survivors and perpetrators. Through this narrative, Our Only Hope illuminates an ironic and tragic dualism: the steady deterioration of life's circumstances for the Weisz family that is left behind, countered by the transformation of Eddie Weisz into an independent adult and American citizen.

Who Rules the Synagogue? - Religious Authority and the Formation of American Judaism (Hardcover): Zev Eleff Who Rules the Synagogue? - Religious Authority and the Formation of American Judaism (Hardcover)
Zev Eleff
R2,610 Discovery Miles 26 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Who Rules the Synagogue? explores how American Jewry in the nineteenth century transformed from a lay dominated community to one whose leading religious authorities were rabbis. Previously, scholars have chartered the religious history of American Judaism during this era, but Zev Eleff reinterprets this history through the lens of religious authority. Early in the century, American Jews consciously excluded rabbinic forces from playing a role in their community's development. By the final decades of the 1800s, ordained rabbis were in full control of America's leading synagogues and large sectors of American Jewish life, most notably in the commotion caused by the Pittsburgh rabbinic conference of 1885. Eleff weaves together the significant episodes and debates that shaped American Judaism during this formative period, and places this story into the larger context of American religious history and modern Jewish history.

Post-Shoah Dialogues - Re-Thinking Our Texts Together (Paperback): James F. Moore, Henry Knight, Zev Garber, Steven Jacobs Post-Shoah Dialogues - Re-Thinking Our Texts Together (Paperback)
James F. Moore, Henry Knight, Zev Garber, Steven Jacobs
R1,477 Discovery Miles 14 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The "Midrash Group" of the Scholar's Conference on the Holocaust and the Churches has met annually over the last decade to discuss ways for Christians and Jews to find meaning and direction in and from sacred texts after the Holocaust. Post Shoah Dialogues is a sample of four different dialogue sessions of the "Midrash Group." The idea for a Jewish-Christian dialogue on texts grew out of an ongoing conversation between the four scholars represented in this volume, due to the profound affect the Shoah had on the theological thinking of both groups. The essays, focusing on texts matched from Hebrew and Christian scriptures, allow Christians and Jews to read the texts together in such a way as to respect the authentic identity of each other, respect the deep questions arising from the Shoah, and to open avenues for more dialogue.

Transdisciplinary Challenges in Landscape Ecology and Restoration Ecology - An Anthology (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Zev Naveh Transdisciplinary Challenges in Landscape Ecology and Restoration Ecology - An Anthology (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)

Capitalizing on forty years of intensive ecological studies, this anthology presents a collection of widely dispersed major publications on theoretical and practical Mediterranean, global environmental and landscape issues. These range from Mediterranean ecosystems and vegetation types in California and Israel, to the significance of fire in the evolution of cultural Mediterranean landscapes in the Pleistocene and Early Holocene with special reference to Mt. Carmel; and from the development of Tanzania Masailand, a sociological and ecological challenge to multifunctional, self-organizing biosphere landscapes and the future of our Total Human Ecosystem.

Each chapter features a comprehensive study of ecological and landscape issues, synthesized in the introduction, and woven with autobiographical experiences. The concluding chapter calls for a transdisciplinary shift in all environmental scientific fields and particularly in landscape and restoration ecology, to cope with the complex, closely interwoven ecological, socio-economical, political and cultural crises facing human society during the present crucial transition from the industrial to the post-industrial, global information age.

Updating and broadening the scope of the groundbreaking Springer book on Landscape Theory and Applications by the author and Lieberman (1994), this is a unique transdisciplinary attempt based on advanced systems complexity theories, which link the natural and human sciences. It will be of value for all those dealing with land and landscape study in the broadest sense as academic scientists, researchers and scholars, professionals and practitioners and students.
