Informing Choices for Meeting China's Energy Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Zheng Li, Angelo Amorelli, Pei Liu Informing Choices for Meeting China's Energy Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Zheng Li, Angelo Amorelli, Pei Liu
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book describes the scale and complexity of China's energy system, using Sankey diagrams to visualize the energy flows across the economy and categorizing the differences between provinces. China's provinces extend over a vast area and are at different stages of economic development. Regional planning and inter-regional optimization will be essential for planning a future infrastructure that will allow China as a whole to optimize and avoid overcapacity and inefficiency. In this context, it introduces a new energy systems modeling approach and demonstrates its application in the power sector. This power model can help optimize the overall design of the power system and reveal how different future investment choices, e.g. natural gas fired power, only emerge when details such as regional, seasonal and diurnal demand factors are considered. Lastly, it looks at options for mitigating carbon and the major role that renewables & natural gas could play, as well as carbon pricing.

Since 1949, Professor Liu had devoted his life to studying taxonomy, systematics, ecology, zoogeography and aquaculture and published a total of more than 210 papers and monographs. He described two new genera, fifty-two new species and one new subspecies, including not only crustaceans but also cnidarians, polychaetes and molluscs. In this volume forty of his friends and colleagues put together sixteen papers to honour Professor Liu, and named after him three new genera and eleven new species. First published as a Special Issue of Crustaceana 93(11-12): 1233-1546.

Xin-Zheng Li, Enge Wang
R2,495 Discovery Miles 24 950 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book provides a relatively complete introduction to the methods used in computational condensed matter. A wide range of electronic structure theories are introduced, including traditional quantum chemistry methods, density functional theory, many-body perturbation theory, and more. Molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed, with extensions to enhanced sampling and free-energy calculation techniques including umbrella sampling, meta-dynamics, integrated tempering sampling, etc. As a further extension beyond the standard Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics, some simulation techniques for the description of quantum nuclear effects are also covered, based on Feynman's path-integral representation of quantum mechanics. The book aims to help beginning graduate students to set up a framework of the concepts they should know before tackling the physical/chemical problems they will face in their research.

Written with an eye toward green energy installations and novel manufacturing facilities, this concise volume enables scientific researchers and engineering professionals to learn design techniques, control existing and complex issues, proficiently use CAD tools, visualize technical fundamentals, and gain analytic and technical skills. This book also: * Equips practitioners and researchers to handle powerful tools for engineering design and analysis using many detailed illustrations * Emphasizes important engineering design principles in introducing readers to a range of techniques * Includes tutorials providing readers with appropriate scaffolding to accelerate their learning process * Adopts a product development, cost-consideration perspective through the book's many examples

Feminisms with Chinese Characteristics (Paperback): Ping Zhu, Hui Faye Xiao Feminisms with Chinese Characteristics (Paperback)
Ping Zhu, Hui Faye Xiao; Contributions by Ping Zhu, Hui Faye Xiao, Nicola Spakowski, …
R1,120 R857 Discovery Miles 8 570 Save R263 (23%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The year 1995, when the Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing, marks a historical milestone in the development of the Chinese feminist movement. In the decades that followed, three distinct trends emerged: first, there was a rise in feminist NGOs in mainland China and a surfacing of LGBTQ movements; second, social and economic developments nurtured new female agency, creating a vibrant, women-oriented cultural milieu in China; third, in response to ethnocentric Western feminism, some Chinese feminist scholars and activists recuperated the legacies of socialist China's state feminism and gender policies in a new millennium. These trends have brought Chinese women unprecedented choices, resources, opportunities, pitfalls, challenges, and even crises. In this timely volume, Zhu and Xiao offer an examination of the ways in which Chinese feminist ideas have developed since the mid-1990s. By juxtaposing the plural ""feminisms"" with ""Chinese characteristics,"" they both underline the importance of integrating Chinese culture, history, and tradition in the discussions of Chinese feminisms, and, stress the difference between the plethora of contemporary Chinese feminisms and the singular state feminism. The twelve chapters in this interdisciplinary collection address the theme of feminisms with Chinese characteristics from different perspectives rendered from lived experiences, historical reflections, theoretical ruminations, and cultural and sociopolitical critiques, painting a panoramic picture of Chinese feminisms in the age of globalization.

Moduli of Supersingular Abelian Varieties (Paperback, 1998 ed.): Ke-Zheng Li, Frans Oort Moduli of Supersingular Abelian Varieties (Paperback, 1998 ed.)
Ke-Zheng Li, Frans Oort
R1,045 Discovery Miles 10 450 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

Abelian varieties can be classified via their moduli. In positive characteristic the structure of the p-torsion-structure is an additional, useful tool. For that structure supersingular abelian varieties can be considered the most special ones. They provide a starting point for the fine description of various structures. For low dimensions the moduli of supersingular abelian varieties is by now well understood. In this book we provide a description of the supersingular locus in all dimensions, in particular we compute the dimension of it: it turns out to be equal to AEg.g/4UE, and we express the number of components as a class number, thus completing a long historical line where special cases were studied and general results were conjectured (Deuring, Hasse, Igusa, Oda-Oort, Katsura-Oort).

Qinhua Zheng, Li Chen, Daniel Burgos
R2,655 Discovery Miles 26 550 Ships in 10 - 17 working days

This book aims at discussing the development of MOOCs in China in relation to MOOCs in other countries or areas. Based on the history of MOOCs, we summarize and compare the development of MOOCs in China and other countries with empirical evidence from a comprehensive investigation about MOOCs in Asian, United States, and Europe. Then we discuss about the importance of MOOCs in China and its role in the reform of higher education system, and the model of teaching and learning in China. After all, we provide suggestions about how to improve MOOCs at the national, institutional, and individual level. In this book, we analyse and present the current construction and development of MOOCs in China from four dimensions including platforms, courses, learners, colleges and universities based on huge empirical evidence from a comprehensive investigation of 14 platforms, 42 universities, 1388 MOOCs, and 22895 learners. Our investigation mainly focused on seven topics: platform construction and operation, learner groups, curriculum organization form, teaching interaction, learning evaluation model, learning support service, and courses certification and academic score system. Based on the investigation, we found there is an emerging trend of collaboration among government, universities and enterprise in the development of MOOCs in China, which provides great opportunities to build an innovative educational service system for all kinds of learners. We also discuss our findings in relation to the corresponding development of MOOCs in United States, Europe and other regions and then focus on the unique challenges that China faces, such as the lack of deep learning in MOOCs, the low information literacy and self-regulated learning abilities of MOOC learners, the lack of individualized support for MOOC learners, and so on. At last, this book summarizes the overall development of MOOCs in China and other countries and then put forward the future trends and suggestions in this field.
