This book improves our understanding of battlefield coalitions,
providing novel theoretical and empirical insight into their nature
and capabilities, as well as the military and political
consequences of their combat operations. The volume provides the
first dataset of battlefield coalitions, uses primary sources to
understand how non-state actors of varying types form such
groupings, reports interviews with policymakers illuminating North
Atlantic Treaty Organization operations, and uses cases studies of
various wars waged throughout the nineteenth, twentieth, and
twenty-first centuries to understand how other such collectives
have operated. Part I introduces battlefield coalitions as an
object of study, demonstrating how they are distinct from other
wartime collectives. Using a novel dataset of actors fighting in
492 battles during interstate wars waged between 1900 and 2003, it
provides, for the first time, a comprehensive portrait of the
universe of battlefield coalitions. Part II explores processes and
dynamics involved in the formation of battlefield coalitions,
addressing how potential coalition members prepare for future
battles in peacetime (as well as the consequences of such
preparations) and the dynamics of mission design. Part III focuses
on how battlefield coalitions are organised and fight when combat
ensues, notably their decision-making rules and practices, command
structures, and learning capacities. Part IV addresses three
curious tendencies observed in the operations of battlefield
coalitions: partners under-providing effort in combat, rebels and
terrorist networks persisting in cooperation even when their
interests diverge, and members defecting from the collective. Part
V concludes with a chapter outlining for future researchers what we
know about battlefield coalitions and what remains to be
understood. This book will be of much interest to students of
military and strategic studies, defence studies and International
Relations.

This book contains 38 papers authored by both scientists and
practitioners focused on an interdisciplinary approach to the
development of cyber-physical systems. Recently our civilization
has been facing one of the most severe challenges in modern
history. The COVID-19 pandemic devastated the global economy and
significantly disrupted numerous areas of economic activity. Only
radical increase of efficiency and versatility of industrial
production, with further limitation of human involvement,
paralleled by the decrease of environmental burden, will enable us
to cope with such challenges. We hope that the presented book
provides input to the solution of at least some problems brought
about by this challenge. This approach relies on the development of
measuring techniques, robotic and mechatronic systems, industrial
automation, numerical modeling and simulation as well as
application of artificial intelligence techniques required by the
transformation leading to Industry 4.0.
This hands-on, laboratory driven textbook helps readers understand
principles of digital signal processing (DSP) and basics of
software-based digital communication, particularly software-defined
networks (SDN) and software-defined radio (SDR). In the book only
the most important concepts are presented. Each book chapter is an
introduction to computer laboratory and is accompanied by complete
laboratory exercises and ready-to-go Matlab programs with figures
and comments (available at the book webpage and running also in GNU
Octave 5.2 with free software packages), showing all or most
details of relevant algorithms. Students are tasked to understand
programs, modify them, and apply presented concepts to recorded
real RF signal or simulated received signals, with modelled
transmission condition and hardware imperfections. Teaching is done
by showing examples and their modifications to different real-world
telecommunication-like applications. The book consists of three
parts: introduction to DSP (spectral analysis and digital
filtering), introduction to DSP advanced topics (multi-rate,
adaptive, model-based and multimedia - speech, audio, video -
signal analysis and processing) and introduction to
software-defined modern telecommunication systems (SDR technology,
analog and digital modulations, single- and multi-carrier systems,
channel estimation and correction as well as synchronization
issues). Many real signals are processed in the book, in the first
part - mainly speech and audio, while in the second part - mainly
RF recordings taken from RTL-SDR USB stick and ADALM-PLUTO module,
for example captured IQ data of VOR avionics signal, classical FM
radio with RDS, digital DAB/DAB+ radio and 4G-LTE digital
telephony. Additionally, modelling and simulation of some
transmission scenarios are tested in software in the book, in
particular TETRA, ADSL and 5G signals. Provides an introduction to
digital signal processing and software-based digital communication;
Presents a transition from digital signal processing to
software-defined telecommunication; Features a suite of pedagogical
materials including a laboratory test-bed and computer
exercises/experiments .

future prospects. On 1 January 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) defined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
- 12 of which involve taking action on climate change - officially
came into force. To achieve sustainable development, it is and will
remain crucial to harmonize three interconnected core elements:
economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection.
This book highlights a range of new approaches and concepts in the
field of software engineering. Based on systematic methods,
graphical and formal models, the approaches are designed for
solving practical problems encountered in actual software
development. The book is divided into 13 chapters, which address
core aspects such as security, performance and quality measurement.
Chiefly intended to stimulate new research by presenting real
problems faced by the industry, and to facilitate software
development by applying precisely defined, validated and efficient
models and methods, the book offers a valuable guide - for
researchers and industry practitioners at small, medium and large
companies alike.
This book provides the latest research on and applications of
advanced GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and 3D spatial
techniques in the fields of Civil and Environmental Engineering,

INDUSTRY 4.0, with a focus on offering a better understanding of
and promoting participation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Each chapter presents a detailed analysis of a specific technical
problem, in most cases followed by a numerical analysis, simulation
and description of the results of implementing the solution in a
real-world context. The theoretical results, practical solutions

This book contributes to the current discussion on global
environmental changes by discussing modifications in marine
ecosystems related to global climate changes. In marine ecosystems,
rising atmospheric CO2 and climate changes are associated with
shifts in temperature, circulation, stratification, nutrient input,
oxygen concentration and ocean acidification, which have
significant biological effects on a regional and global scale.
Knowing how these changes affect the distribution and abundance of
plankton in the ocean currents is crucial to our understanding of
how climate change impacts the marine environment. Ocean
temperatures, weather and climatic changes greatly influence the
amount and location of nutrients in the water column. If
temperatures and currents change, the plankton production cycle may
not coincide with the reproduction cycle of fish. The above changes
are closely related to the changes in radiative forcing, which
initiate feedback mechanisms like changes in surface temperature,
circulation, and atmospheric chemistry.
This book presents valuable insights on a vast array of topics in
the field of environmental studies. The works published in the book
were presented within the scope of the 2013 Sopot Forum of Young
Scientists. The Forum is an annual event which provides a platform
for young researchers to present their work and exchange ideas with
their peers. The aim of the forum is to make science more popular,
so the speakers talked about their work in a way that was easily
understandable. The book contains actual scientific papers on their
own topics of interest. The papers represent different areas of
environmental sciences, from biology to physics. The main umbrella
topic for this book is "WHERE THE WORLD IS HEADING" and the papers
are constructed in such a way as to try to answer this from each
contributor's individual perspective.
This book presents the set of papers accepted for presentation at
the International Conference Automation, held in Warsaw, 2-4 March
of 2016. It presents the research results presented by top experts
in the fields of industrial automation, control, robotics and
measurement techniques. Each chapter presents a thorough analysis
of a specific technical problem which is usually followed by
numerical analysis, simulation, and description of results of

presented theoretical results, practical solutions and guidelines
will be valuable for both researchers working in the area of
engineering sciences and for practitioners solving industrial
problems.
Millennium School is the first book by Krzysztof Zielinski one of
the most interesting photographers of the young generation of
Polish photographers. The photographs focus on the primary school
which he attended as a child in the small Polish town of Wabrzezno.
The school itself, Primary School no 3, was built in 1962 as a part
of a major government development masterplan - - 'A thousand
schools for the thousand years of the Polish state'. This is why
these schools were called 'millennium memorial schools'.
Essentially a propaganda plan, the new schools were presented as a
gift from the Communist party to the nation, even though the
post-war demographic boom meant that they were a necessity. Built
around standard layouts, usually two or three storeys and
constructed from prefabricated concrete, they were designed to be
adaptable for military purposes with many having underground
shelters and capable of being converted into temporary hospitals.
Compared with the standards of the 60s, the schools were modern and
well-equipped, and being a student at one was regarded as a sort of
distinction. Today, the splendour of millennium schools is long
forgotten. Physically, little has changed over the past twenty
years, the furniture and equipment are the same, though as if to
hide the passage of time and their modest and now outdated
facilities, the classrooms have been painted in vivid colours.
This book presents recent progresses in control, automation,
robotics, and measuring techniques. It includes contributions of
top experts in the fields, focused on both theory and industrial
practice. The particular chapters present a deep analysis of a

for the solution of a real world problem. The presented theoretical
results, practical solutions and guidelines will be useful for both
researchers working in the area of engineering sciences and for
practitioners solving industrial problems.
