The third volume in The Adriatic Islands Project, The work utilises, essentially, the same research methodologies developed for survey on Hvar and Brae. The continuing reliance of project staff on complex computer technologies to store and analyse the large project databases also remains, and the impact of the increasing sophistication of these technologies for display of data can be seen in this publication. This book, covering prehistory to medieval times, is divided into two parts, reflecting the diverse nature of the areas under study.
A series of 51 papers forming the Proceedings of the 28th CAA Conference held at Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2000 focusing on computer applications and quantative methods in European and American archaeology. The papers, which are all in English, are divided into eight sections: Documentation and recording of sites and field survey data; Artefact analysis and classification; National and regional SMR; Intra site spatial analysis; Archaeological regional spatial analysis and predictive modelling; Future trends in spatial analyses; Presentation of archaeological data; Public access to archaeological heritage.
Volume 1 of the Adriatic Islands Project, The Archaeological Heritage of Hvar, paved the way for this survey of the island of Brac, undertaken from 1994-1996. The authors discuss the previous archaeological research carried out on Brac, the nature of the island's geography, climate, soils, population trends and agricultural economy, and ancient written sources. The majority of the book is taken up by an extensive gazetteer of sites and monuments, which more than doubled in size as the result of these field campaigns. Though low on interpretation, this study achieves its goal of promoting a better understanding of the archaeology of the area and highlighting the need for further study and proper heritage management.
