There’s power in a book…
They call them wayward girls. Loose girls. Girls who grew up too fast. And they’re sent to the Wellwood Home in St. Augustine, Florida, where unwed mothers are hidden by their families to have their babies in secret, give them up for adoption, and most important of all, to forget any of it ever happened.
Fifteen-year-old Fern arrives at the home in the sweltering summer of 1970, pregnant, terrified and alone. Under the watchful eye of the stern Miss Wellwood, she meets a dozen other girls in the same predicament. There’s Rose, a hippie who insists she’s going to find a way to keep her baby and escape to a commune. And Zinnia, a budding musician who knows she’s going to go home and marry her baby’s father. And Holly, a wisp of a girl, barely fourteen, mute and pregnant by no-one-knows-who.
Everything the girls eat, every moment of their waking day, and everything they’re allowed to talk about is strictly controlled by adults who claim they know what’s best for them. Then Fern meets a librarian who gives her an occult book about witchcraft, and power is in the hands of the girls for the first time in their lives. But power can destroy as easily as it creates, and it’s never given freely. There’s always a price to be paid…and it’s usually paid in blood.
In Witchcraft for Wayward Girls, the author of How to Sell a Haunted House and The Final Girl Support Group delivers another searing, completely original novel and further cements his status as a “horror master” (NPR).

In horror movies, the final girl is the one who's left standing
when the credits roll. The one who fought back, defeated the
killer, and avenged her friends. The one who emerges bloodied but
victorious. But after the sirens fade and the audience moves on,
what happens to her? Lynnette Tarkington survived a massacre
twenty-two years ago, and it has defined every day of her life
since. And she's not alone. For more than a decade she's been
meeting with five other final girls and their therapist in a
support group for those who survived the unthinkable, putting their
lives back together, piece by piece. That is until one of the women
misses a meeting and Lynnette's worst fears are realized-someone
knows about the group and is determined to take their lives apart
again, piece by piece. But the thing about these final girls is
that they have each other now, and no matter how bad the odds, how
dark the night, how sharp the knife, they will never, ever give up.
When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home.
She doesn't want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to
Charleston. She doesn't want to deal with her family home, stuffed
to the rafters with the remnants of her father's academic career
and her mother's lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She
doesn't want to learn how to live without the two people who knew
and loved her best in the world. Mostly, she doesn't want to deal
with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired
from one job after another, and resents her success. But she'll
need his help to get the house ready for sale because it'll take
more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime
of memories to get this place on the market. Some houses don't want
to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them... Like
his novels The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires and
The Final Girl Support Group, How to Sell a Haunted House is
classic Hendrix: equal parts heartfelt and terrifying-a gripping
new read from "the horror master" (USA Today).

THE DELIGHT OF THE FATHER AND OTHER LYRICS is a collection of over
sixty biblically based poems, many of which were written to be
sung. The book is arranged throughout with relevant scripture on
the page facing each poem.
When Mark, an American soldier serving in Germany in the early
1950s, meets Lauren, a young German girl, their lives change
forever. But love is never easy, and for these two it may well be
impossible. In a world still reeling from the horrors of war and
genocide, the budding love between a Jewish soldier and a German
Catholic girl is controversial and dangerous.
It is a time in history that demands the same dedication and
focus on duty as in the war years. Both of the lovers are pressured
from all sides, and each feels the impossibility of their love-but
neither can deny or forget it. Mark is faced with military duty, a
possible court martial, and a threatening sociopath. Lauren is
expected to play the role of the dutiful German daughter who
follows the path dictated by her father. In addition to her
obligations to her father, she is expected to focus only on school,
work, her church, and her duty to country.
Their very different backgrounds stand as obstacles they can't
disregard. Neither is so naive as to ignore the considerable
cultural and societal pressure they face. But the heart does not
always listen to logic, and soon they are irresistibly drawn
together-come what may.
Despite all the many forces they face, can they find the
strength to stay together in a world that propels them apart?

An insider's look at the changes going on in Nicaragua—the
internal political maneuvering of Daniel Ortega, the responses by
the United States, and the success of recent American pro-democracy
civil society efforts there. At the time of Ortega's return to the
presidency, attorney and award-winning author Steven Hendrix was on
the ground in Nicaragua working for the U.S. Agency for
International Development. The New Nicaragua: Lessons in
Development, Democracy, and Nation-Building for the United States
is Hendrix's eyewitness account of the changes going on there. What
Hendrix found in the new Nicaragua is a decidedly mixed bag: a
presidential campaign marked by dirty tricks and backroom deals,
yet an election held under the first neutral comprehensive
observation ever in the developing world; an overt effort to
appease the United States even while attempting to undermine U.S.
policy in the region. Yet despite this, Hendrix saw U.S.
pro-democracy, civil society efforts succeed, disproving the many
skeptics who doubt that nation-building is even possible.
Sanctions for illegitimacy vary enormously across cultures and
are linked to social structure. Some societies handle non-marital
births in a relaxed way; others use restitutive sanctions; and
others repressive sanctions. This study of 122 non-industrial
societies shows that the regulation of illegitimacy is more varied
than any particular theory suggests (and there are many, including
Marxism, functionalism, sociobiology, and feminism). The work aims
to test a variety of theoretical ideas about the possible factors
involved in social regulation of illegitimacy -- social hierarchy,
fraternal interest groups, female power, extended family structure,
affection for children, and father involvement with infants -- and
to examine combinations of these factors for predictive power. This
study will be of interest to scholars and students in sociology,
family studies, and cultural anthropology.
