In 1517, the Ottoman Sultan Selim "the Grim" conquered Egypt and
brought his empire for the first time in history into direct
contact with the trading world of the Indian Ocean. During the
decades that followed, the Ottomans became progressively more
engaged in the affairs of this vast and previously unfamiliar
region, eventually to the point of launching a systematic
ideological, military and commercial challenge to the Portuguese
Empire, their main rival for control of the lucrative trade routes
of maritime Asia.
The Ottoman Age of Exploration is the first comprehensive
historical account of this century-long struggle for global
dominance, a struggle that raged from the shores of the
Mediterranean to the Straits of Malacca, and from the interior of
Africa to the steppes of Central Asia. Based on extensive research
in the archives of Turkey and Portugal, as well as materials
written on three continents and in a half dozen languages, it
presents an unprecedented picture of the global reach of the
Ottoman state during the sixteenth century. It does so through a
dramatic recounting of the lives of sultans and viziers, spies,
corsairs, soldiers-of-fortune, and women from the imperial harem.
Challenging traditional narratives of Western dominance, it argues
that the Ottomans were not only active participants in the Age of
Exploration, but ultimately bested the Portuguese in the game of
global politics by using sea power, dynastic prestige, and
commercial savoir faire to create their own imperial dominion
throughout the Indian Ocean.

Grounded in theory, Psychological Perspectives for the Chicanx and
Latinx Family explores key issues affecting the psychology and
well-being of Chicanx and Latinx families, the fastest growing
ethnic group in the United States. The book analyzes Latinx
families through diverse theoretical models. It underscores gender
and sexuality as important components of Latinx self-identity and
provides readers with an overview of major issues affecting Latinx
families today. The text reviews theories that explain how
migration and its legacy impact family patterns, as well as how
various social, political, and cultural factors influence gender
roles, parenting styles, and power structures within families
across generations. The second edition features expanded coverage
on family theory, transnational and trans-border families, queer
family development, internal diversity, colorism, race of mixed
individuals, and divorced and blended families. Psychological
Perspectives for the Chicano and Latino Family is ideal for courses
in Chicanx studies, Latinx studies, and women and gender studies.
It can also be used in any course addressing diverse family
structures in the United States.
Jorge Luis Borges is, undeniably, Argentina's best-known and most
influential writer. In addition to scholarly studies of his work,
his emblematic figure continues to appear on book covers and
carrier bags, in biographies, plaques and statues, photographs and
interviews, as well as cartoons and city tours. The Making of Jorge
Luis Borges as an Argentine Cultural Icon argues that the ideas and
expectations that Argentine people have placed upon the author -
thus constructing the icon - are also those that allow them to
define their cultural identity. The book examines these intertwined
processes by analysing the image of Borges in biographies,
photographs, comic strips and urban spaces and the socio-political,
historical and cultural contexts in which they were produced. The
study seeks not to reveal a Borgesian essence but, rather, to
expose the complexity of the ongoing mechanisms which construct
Borges the icon. Despite the vast amount of biographical and
critical work about the writer that has been produced in Argentina
and abroad, The Making of Jorge Luis Borges as an Argentine
Cultural Icon is the first in-depth, comprehensive examination of
the construction of the author as an Argentine cultural icon.
The book analyzes the different major accidents which can occur in
process plants and during the transportation of hazardous
materials. The main features of fires, explosions and toxic
releases are discussed, and a set of mathematical models allowing
the prediction of their effects and consequences are explained.
With a practical approach, the models are applied to simple
illustrative examples, as well as to more complex real cases. The
use of these calculations in the frame of Quantitative Risk
Analysis is also treated.
Evaluation of the effects of major accidents in industrial
installations covers the following topics: general introduction,
source term, fire accidents, vapour cloud explosions, BLEVEs and
vessel explosions, atmospheric dispersion of toxic or flammable
clouds, vulnerability, and quantitative risk analysis.
This book is a useful tool for engineering professionals, as well
as an interesting reference for teaching at graduate and
post-graduate levels.
Both the essential aspects and the calculations related to the
diverse accidents are discussed
The prediction of effects and consequences is performed with a
practical approach
Recent contributions from literature have been included
Subjects of increasing importance have been included: an extense
analysis of BLEVEs, for example, or the atmospheric dispersion of
pathogenic agents.
"Just Play Naturally" by Vivien Mackie, in conversation with Joe
Armstrong, goes very deep into the creative process by recounting
the steps by which Pablo Casals taught Mackie, as a young woman, to
go beyond all her formal training in order to become a real
musician, and it goes on to show how an artist, in this case a
performing artist, may continue going deeper all the rest of her
life. 'The dialogue between Vivien the cellist and Joe the
flautist, both of whom are skilled an devoted teachers of the
Alexander Technique, cold profit any practitioner of the arts, but
it penetrates beyond art into life itself. 'This book illustrates
the evolution of a sense of rhythm, of a connection to the breath,
of the ways in which the self combines the resources of the mind
and the body, of motion and stillness, of pitch and meter. Even
more than the above, this book tells how to change your life, how
to get in touch with the reality beneath learned experience.' Peter
Davison, Poet, Editor 'I find Just Play Naturally' extraordinary
moving - and important account of artistic discipleship,
dedication, communion - as well as a deepening revelation of the
Alexander Technique.' Rosanna Warren, Poet, Professor of
Comparative Literature, Boston University 'I think that this is a
most valuable addition to the list of books concerning the F.
Matthias Alexander Technique. It describes the experiences
encountered by an accomplished musician in making practical
application of the Technique, but it also reveals the extent to
which one of the greatest musical artists of our time, Pablo
Casals, thought and worked in accordance with the similar
principles. Readers will learn much from this book about an
approachto study and performance from which all students could
benefit.' W.H.M. Carringon, Master Teacher of the Alexander
Technique, London

This edited volume explores the impact of social identity (race,
class, gender, sexual orientation, religion and so on) on teaching
and learning. Operating within a realist framework, the
contributors to this volume (all of whom are minority scholars)
consider ways to productively engage identity in the classroom and
at the institutional level, as a means of working toward racial
democracy in higher education. As realists, all authors in the
volume hold the theoretical position that identities are both real
and constructed, and that identities are always epistemically
salient. Thus the book argues--from diverse disciplinary and
educational contexts--that mobilizing identities in academia is a
necessary part of progressive (antiracist, feminist, anticolonial)
educators' efforts to transform knowledge-making, to establish
"critical access" for minority students in higher education, and to
create a more just and democratic society.
