A high level of pigmentation provides good covering power and tinting strength. While it can't match the superior pigment load of Artists' Oil Colour, the Winton range is much stronger than many other artists' quality ranges. The economical cost has been achieved through the use of moderately priced pigments rather than lessening the pigment content to an unacceptable level. Winsor & Newton formulation, manufacture and quality control ensure a product of absolute excellence. The Winton range has a more uniform consistency than Artists' Oil Colour and is slightly stiffer. It offers excellent retention of brush and palette knife strokes.

Winsor & Newton colours, every colour in the range is
individually formulated to take advantage of the natural
characteristics of each pigment and to ensure the stability of the
colour. The vehicle (oil modified alkyd resin) allows the colour to
dry quicker whilst retaining the other characteristics of
conventional oil colour.Because alkyd resin has physical properties
that differ slightly from those of traditional oils, the pigment
load is somewhat different as well. Experienced painters will
notice slightly greater transparency compared to Artists' Oil
Colour. The colour has been formulated to offer the greatest degree
of tinting strength possible (consistent with good handling
properties), and to take full advantage of the true characteristics
of each pigment.pdf=SDSGriffinAlkyd.pdf Material Safety Data Sheet

Good quality gouache colour is a combination of pigment and gum arabic. Gum arabic is the binder that holds the pigment, giving it that perfect creamy 'flowing' consistency. (NB some cheaper brands may have chalk added to the pigment which in turn effects the 'flow and the brilliance of colour'). As a result of the high level of pigmentation Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache dries to a matt finish. This reduces the reflection when photographing the work.
Every colour within the range has an individual formulation to take advantage of each and every pigment characteristic and ensure tube stability.
One of the natural attributes of gum arabic - the binder used in Designers Gouache is that it is quick drying. This faster drying allows quick working techniques and preliminary sketching to be done. Also as with water colour, work can be finished quickly and as a result travelling with work is made much easier.

Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolours are chosen according
to mass tone (colour from tube), undertone (bias of colour when in a
thin film), colour strength, relative opacity and the character of the
pigment in watercolour, ie. granulating, staining or even wash. The
resultant colour spectrum ensures the largest number of colours can be
mixed from the range.
