No. 1 internationally bestselling author Deon Meyer's most thrilling novel to date, Scorpio Rising features Detectives Benny Griessel and Vaughn Cupido scrambling to solve seemingly unrelated cases in a race against time to avoid catastrophe... When Detective Benny Griessel is assigned the case of a private eye crushed under a BMW in his garage, it looks a lot like suicide. But Benny’s partner, Vaughn Cupido, knew the deceased, and he says it’s murder. Benny would love to have Vaughn’s help on the case, because so far it’s going nowhere. But his partner is stuck wasting his considerable talents investigating the arson of a remote shepherd’s hut. Then a caravan explodes on a nearby farm, and the identity of the body inside drives the media into a feeding frenzy just a week before an international security forum comes to town. Suddenly, Griessel and Cupido’s dead-end cases are burning red-hot, and the flames threaten not just their careers, but those dearest to them. Local and international threats become perilously entwined in this tautly constructed thriller from a master of the form, as Griessel and Cupido race against time to uncover a plot that could challenge global politics at the highest level . . .
"Love & Lobola honours the meals that shaped our love story. Modern love often feels disconnected from heritage. These recipes show that you can be contemporary, well-travelled, curious, adventurous – and still be deeply rooted in tradition. In our kitchen, chakalaka can sit beside a Frenchstyle cordon bleu chicken. Umngqusho can share a table with crusty Lazy Boy beer bread. A December sheep roasted over fire can be followed by a delicate apple galette. Our love is layered. So is our food." From first meals together and cooking for the parents to hosting friends and date night, along with the food served over the lobola weekend, and more, this cookbook tells a story that goes beyond ingredients or techniques.
When Markus Jooste died in 2024, he took many of Steinhoff’s secrets with him. But not all of them. The collapse of Steinhoff wiped more than R200-billion from global stock markets and exposed the largest corporate fraud in South African history. For years the full account of what happened remained locked inside a confidential forensic report and was kept from the public. Now, James-Brent Styan, author of the bestselling 2018 book on Steinhoff, returns to the scandal that shook South Africa’s business world. Drawing on the full forensic report and multiple interviews with key insiders speaking for the first time, Styan uncovers new details about Jooste’s secret lives, the way he ran his company and the silences that allowed the deception to grow. This gripping sequel reveals how unchecked ambition and blind self-interest outmanoeuvred every corporate-governance safeguard and built a house of cards in plain sight. Until it all came crashing down.
This is more than a rugby story. It’s a story of faith, family, sacrifice and the courage to defy the odds. "From the dusty streets of Kraaifontein to the biggest stadiums in the world, my journey was never about taking the easy route. Growing up, I was told I was too small to compete. Too small to play at the highest level. Too small to reach the dreams I carried in my heart. My father gave me valuable lessons that shaped my life: Work harder. Stay humble. Never give up. His words became my foundation. Sidestepping the Odds is my story of a boy who dreamed big, worked relentlessly and refused to let other people’s expectations define his future. It’s a story to inspire those who were told they were too small, too different, too ordinary. It’s for those who faced rejection or impossible odds and wondered if their dreams were worth chasing. I hope my story shows that your circumstances should not define your future. That purpose is found through perseverance. And that the odds don’t decide who or what you become. YOU do." Sidestep the odds. Step into your purpose.

Candid and self-reflective, this political memoir is a story about confronting inherited beliefs and crossing divides. Born into Afrikaner nationalism, Roelf Meyer rose through the ranks of the National Party in the 1980s. As his views on apartheid shifted, he became the NP’s chief negotiator during South Africa’s transition to democracy. He offers a candid insider’s account of the negotiations, his pivotal relationship with Cyril Ramaphosa, and what it truly takes to negotiate peace.
Chris Hani is remembered as the fearless guerrilla commander and revolutionary leader whose assassination changed the course of South African history. But behind the public icon was a son, husband, father, intellectual, mentor and friend whose life has never before been explored with such depth and intimacy. Drawing on years of research and extensive interviews with family members, comrades-in-arms and political contemporaries, acclaimed writer Zakes Mda offers the most complete portrait yet of one of South Africa's most admired – and contested – freedom fighters. From Hani's childhood in rural Cofimvaba and his political awakening, through military training in the Soviet Union, the Wankie Campaign, the underground struggle in Lesotho, the internal conflicts of the ANC in exile, and the negotiations that ended apartheid, this is both the story of an extraordinary individual and the history of a nation in struggle. Mda moves beyond myth to reveal the contradictions, sacrifices and relationships that shaped Hani's life, exploring his unwavering commitment to justice alongside his deep devotion to family and comrades. Richly researched and compellingly written, Chris Hani: A Life of Courage and Compassion is a powerful biography of a revolutionary whose integrity, humanity and ideals continue to resonate in South Africa today.

Hassan Howa, cricketer and anti-apartheid sports activist, refused to separate sport from political struggle. There could be no normal sport in abnormal times. Howa was a founding member of the South African Cricket Board of Control (SACBOC) in 1947, which sought to promote cricket among the dispossessed and oppressed. Throughout his tenure he became a known for championing movements for equality and non-racial sport. In his time there he led the organisation in a campaign against ‘white’ cricket which helped ensure South Africa were banned from international cricket. While sport in South Africa is now seen and known as a key unifier this wasn’t always the case. There was a time when sports were the poster child for the apartheid regime’s façade of a peaceful South Africa. Howa and the people he worked with went to lengths to break that façade. Hassan Howa – No Normal Sport… A Biography of his Life and Times is his story. Written by journalist Dougie Oakes with the support of Nazeem Howa this bold biography chronicles Howa’s journey into resistance, showing how apartheid turned sport into an ideological and real battlefield. It shows how Howa refused to compromise, how he fought power, apartheid’s overseas friends and, sometimes, even his own allies to demand non-racial sport. With Oakes’ sharp wit and Howa’s powerful story this biography draws readers in and leaves them with a better understanding of the history of sport in South Africa and a man who dedicated himself to it. South Africa’s illustrious sports history, like all other aspects of its history and culture, can’t be divorced from apartheid and its discriminatory policies. Yet, that is exactly what Hassan Howa and the sportspeople of his time were expected to believe. When apartheid closed South Africa’s fields, courts, pools and pitches to most of its people, Howa stood firm – and thousands stood with him. Their message rang out in South Africa and across the world: ‘No, no, no to racist sport!’ Howa’s impact went beyond the pitch and his popularity stretched beyond sport – as the photograph of him sitting at the top table with leading activists at the founding conference of the United Democratic Front shows. Oakes takes readers through the long boycotts, the isolation and the risks to life, livelihood and freedom. All these experiences, hardships and risks made Howa the unapologetic and resolute activist we know today.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a riveting novel about the risks we take to protect the ones we love in a world where crisis is always just around the corner. On September 11, 2001, when Molly Fitzgerald was only two months old, her mother went to an appointment at the World Trade Center and never came home. Her father and the stepmother who raised her couldn’t have loved her more, but she still grew up with a healthy dread of disasters. Now an adult, she runs the Rhode Island Department for Emergency Preparedness, mapping out ways to save lives during storms, epidemics, and airplane crashes. She and her husband, Jesse—a police polygraph expert with his own history of crisis—have found a love that is a solace in a dangerous world. But then the unexpected upends their new marriage, leading them both to question everything they thought they knew. Moving between past and present, Hollow Bones is an epic story of the lies we tell ourselves as we write the narratives of our lives, the plans we design to protect ourselves at the worst moments, and the ties that bind mothers and daughters.

Jacob Zuma never had an ideological project – a vision of the nation or a mission of genuine upliftment. Rather, his ambition was rooted in personal interests: to evade the law and assuage his dire financial circumstances. Anomalous as his presidency was, his rise to the highest office, and his abuse of it, can be explained. Leading political scientists Mcebisi Ndletyana and Mashupye Maserumule recount the full story of what happened – the plots, the proxies and the power plays – to transform the ANC from a party of principle to one of rent-seeking. With Zuma’s ascendancy, the split in the party was no longer about ideology; it was between the looters and the constitutionalists. Who caved? And who stood firm? As they reconstruct what happened, the authors uncover the chilling tools used by the Zuma faction: suspensions and sidelinings, slurs, bribes, rape allegations, muti . . . even assassination. Yet this is not a story with a single villain. At every turning point – every court ruling, every caucus vote, every nomination declined – a different choice was possible. The Zuma years did not have to unfold as they did. Examining Zuma’s personality and ethnic background, the legacy of exile, and the intricacies of inter-ANC rivalries, The Zuma Effect shows why populism and ethnic mobilisation are so powerful – and dangerous. Drawing on more than 50 interviews with key insiders, this is the definitive account of the Zuma presidency.

Award-winning investigative journalist Hazel Friedman tracked down South African women whom Epstein had recruited and convinced them to share their stories. Drawing on extensive research and interviewing sources who had not spoken out before, Friedman searches for answers: What attracted Epstein, notorious for his aversion to ‘dark girls’, to Africa? How did Cape Town become his hunting ground? And why did he want to buy a home in Bantry Bay? As The Devil Wears Sneakers shows, Epstein’s South African exploits were not confined to luring aspirant models. In his murky world, wealth, espionage and geopolitics intersected with organised crime, and Friedman explores Epstein’s ties with politicians, powerbrokers and covert intelligence. But this is not solely a story of predation and impunity. It is also about silence, trauma – and survival. The Devil Wears Sneakers is a work of relentless reporting and unflinching courage that proves some truths cannot stay buried.
