This biography emphasises the extraordinary versatility and resourcefulness of a lifetime spent serving the public interest with the pen. At the same time, it shows Swift's distinctive love of writing for personal entertainment and diversion, with little or no interest in publication. While remaining a fiercely committed writer, he always tried to preserve, especially in his poetry and letters, a literature dedicated to friendship. Swift's literary career comprises much more than the well-known satires.
One man. 42,773 entries. The brilliant story of how Dr Johnson
succeded in writing the first great English Dictionary By 1700,
France and Italy already had dictionaries of their own, and it
became a matter of national pride that England should rival them.
Dr Johnson rose to the challenge, turning over the garret of his
London home to the creation of his Dictionary. He imagined it would
take three years. Eight years later it was finally published, full
of idiosyncrasies, but complete nevertheless. It would become the
most important British cultural monument of the eighteenth century.
This is the story of Johnson's attempt to define each and every
word. In wonderfully engaging chapters, Hitchings describes
Johnson's adventure - his ambition and vision, his moments of
despair, the mistakes he made along the way and his ultimate
triumph.
This fascinating collection presents a rare look at women writers' first-hand perspectives on early American history. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries many women authors began to write historical analysis, thereby taking on an essential role in defining the new American Republicanism. Like their male counterparts, these writers worried over the definition and practice of both public and private virtue, human equality, and the principles of rationalism. In contrast to male authors, however, female writers inevitably addressed the issue of inequality of the sexes. This collection includes writings that employ a wide range of approaches, from straightforward reportage to poetical historical narratives, from travel writing to historical drama, and even accounts in textbook format, designed to provide women with exercises in critical thinking—training they rarely received through their traditional education.
