Stoned, Drunk, or Sober? - Understanding Alcohol and Drug Use through Qualitative, Quantitative, and Longitudinal Research... Stoned, Drunk, or Sober? - Understanding Alcohol and Drug Use through Qualitative, Quantitative, and Longitudinal Research (Paperback)
Jeremiah Lowney
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 1970, sociologist Jeremiah Lowney began researching a group of surfers called the 'Wall Gang' in a small community of drug and alcohol users on Golden Beach in San Diego, California. Stoned, Drunk, or Sober? is the culmination of Lowney's thirty-eight years of intensive non-participant observation of seventy-two surfers. This book offers a rare look at various qualitative techniques employed to understand alcohol and drug use. Lowney utilizes basic quantitative statistical data to complement and verify the qualitative findings, thereby providing a deeper understanding than if only one or the other had been used. Because it spans so many years, Lowney's longitudinal research offers readers an opportunity to fully grasp the various factors that contribute to substance abuse, the various paths used to overcome the severe consequences of addiction, and the histories of those who did not use drugs, those who did, and those who are now 'free and sober.'

Addicted? - Recognizing Destructive Behaviors Before It's Too Late (Paperback): Marilyn Freimuth Addicted? - Recognizing Destructive Behaviors Before It's Too Late (Paperback)
Marilyn Freimuth
R587 Discovery Miles 5 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Despite our associating addictions with crazy, out of control behavior, most addictions go unrecognized. Those who suffer from addictions often misinterpret their symptoms as a sign of some other problem. Health care professionals who are entrusted by society to identify such problems routinely fail to do so. When addictions are recognized, they are confined to substance use, which overlooks the wide array of activities that engage people in an addictive manner. Further, when addictions are detected, they are in their most advanced and difficult to treat phases. In large part this is due to the all or none way we think about addiction; either you are addicted or not. In reality, an addiction does not emerge fully formed; what starts out as just having fun, gradually, over time, becomes a problem. To limit the devastation created by late stage addictions and reap the benefits of early detection, this book provides questionnaires that screen for a wide array of chemical and behavioral addictions at all stages of development. Much in the same way we learned the early warning signs of cancer, this book explores different ways to recognize the early and often subtle signs of addiction. Unlike cancer, where people rush to get treatment, facing an addiction is associated with guilt and ambivalence. To navigate these feelings and get help, the book provides a step-by-step guide for how to prepare the addicted person, be it oneself or someone else, to change an addiction.

Smoking Cessation - Theory, Interventions & Prevention (Hardcover): Jerome E. Landow Smoking Cessation - Theory, Interventions & Prevention (Hardcover)
Jerome E. Landow
R3,794 Discovery Miles 37 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Smoking is the most common risk factor for the development of lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer death. It is also associated with many other types of cancer, including cancers of the oesophagus, larynx, kidney, pancreas, and cervix. Smoking also increases the risk of other health problems, such as chronic lung disease and heart disease. Smoking during pregnancy can have adverse effects on the unborn child, such as premature delivery and low birth weight. The health benefits of smoking cessation (quitting) are immediate and substantial. Almost immediately, a person's circulation begins to improve and the level of carbon monoxide in the blood begins to decline. (Carbon monoxide, a colourless, odourless gas found in cigarette smoke, reduces the blood's ability to carry oxygen.) A person's pulse rate and blood pressure, which may be abnormally high while smoking, begin to return to normal. Within a few days of quitting, a person's sense of taste and smell return, and breathing becomes increasingly easier. People who quit smoking live longer than those who continue to smoke. After 10 to 15 years, a previous tobacco user's risk of premature death approaches that of a person who has never smoked. Quitting smoking reduces the risk for developing cancer, and this benefit increases the longer a person remains "smoke free". Quitting smoking may cause short-term after-effects, especially for those who have smoked a large number of cigarettes for a long period of time. People who quit smoking are likely to feel anxious, irritable, hungry, more tired, and have difficulty sleeping. They may also have difficulty concentrating. Many tobacco users gain weight when they quit, but usually less than 10 pounds. These changes do subside. This book presents new and important research in this bewildering field.

Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders - A Practitioner's Guide (Paperback): John Smith Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorders - A Practitioner's Guide (Paperback)
John Smith
R1,726 Discovery Miles 17 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Co-occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Disorder: A Practitioner's Guide is a basic overview of current evidence-based practices for treating co-occurring disorders. Co-occurring disorders, also known as dual diagnosis, refers to individuals who have both a mental illness and a co-morbid substance use disorder. The literature suggests that utilizing an "integrated" approach to treatment, treating both disorders concurrently in a program with clinicians specially trained in mental illness and substance abuse, provides the best outcomes for this population. This book is designed to provide clinicians with the basic knowledge and skills required to effectively assess and treat co-occurring disorders.

Substance Use and Abuse - Cultural and Historical Perspectives (Paperback): Russil Durrant, Jo Thakker Substance Use and Abuse - Cultural and Historical Perspectives (Paperback)
Russil Durrant, Jo Thakker
R3,688 Discovery Miles 36 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"This book takes an integrative approach to the understanding of drug use and its relationship to social-cultural factors. It is lucidly and powerfully argued and constitutes a significant achievement. The authors sensibly argue that in order to fully understand and explain drug use and abuse it is necessary to take into account different levels of analysis, reflecting distinct domains of human functioning; the biological, psychosocial, and cultural-historical?.Overall, this book represents an exceptional achievement and should be of interest to drug clinicians and researcher as well as social scientists and students."

--Professor Tony Ward, University of Melbourne

Substance use and abuse are two of the most frequent psychological problems clinicians encounter. Mainstream approaches focus on the biological and psychological factors supporting drug abuse. But to fully comprehend the issue, clinicians need to consider the social, historical, and cultural factors responsible for drug-related problems.

Substance Use and Abuse: Cultural and Historical Perspectives provides an inclusive explanation of the human desire to take drugs. Using a multidisciplinary framework, authors Russil Durrant and Jo Thakker explore the cultural and historical variables that contribute to drug use. Integrating biological, psychosocial, and cultural-historical perspectives, this innovative and accessible volume addresses the fundamental question of why drug use is such a ubiquitous feature of human society.

Addressing issues important to prevention, treatment, and public policy, the authors include

    • A comprehensive, historical survey of drug use
    • An exploration of the evolutionary basis of drug-taking behavior
    • Historically and culturally based explanations of drug use and abuse
    • Inclusive approaches that complement mainstream biopsychosocial perspectives

Designed for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in psychology, counseling, sociology, social work, and health departments, Substance Use and Abuse: Cultural and Historical Perspectives will also be of significant interest to drug clinicians, researchers, and social scientists.

Cigarettes, Nicotine, and Health - A Biobehavioral Approach (Paperback): Lynn T. Kozlowski, Jack E. Henningfield, Janet Brigham Cigarettes, Nicotine, and Health - A Biobehavioral Approach (Paperback)
Lynn T. Kozlowski, Jack E. Henningfield, Janet Brigham
R3,663 Discovery Miles 36 630 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

When smokers inhale smoke into their lungs, they take the drug nicotine into their bodies and brains, where it affects how the smokers feel and act. When smokers display their cigarettes, they are saying something symbolic and personal about themselves. And when smokers smoke, they put themselves at risk, often knowingly, of early disability or death.

Smoking is one of the world?s most pressing public health problems. Cigarettes, Nicotine, and Health reviews the severe problems caused by smoking and examines individual and public health approaches to reducing smoking and its attendant health problems. Cigarettes are the most popular, most addictive, and most deadly form of tobacco use, with cigarette design contributing directly to the dangers of smoking; most of the book focuses on this predominant form of nicotine use.

Therapeutic Communities for the Treatment of Drug Users (Paperback): Barbara Rawlings Therapeutic Communities for the Treatment of Drug Users (Paperback)
Barbara Rawlings; Contributions by George Deleon; Edited by Rowdy Yates
R977 Discovery Miles 9 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Concept-based therapeutic communities emerged out of the informal group meetings of Charles Dederich and a number of former Alcoholics Anonymous members in California in the late 1950s. The model was exported worldwide and has not only become the most widely used approach to residential treatment but has proved enormously influential in the development of many other treatment approaches; both residential and ambulatory. Concept-based therapeutic communities are hierarchical, and the staff and residents form a chain of command. Staff are often qualified for their work by virtue of having been residents in such a community themselves. Like other types of therapeutic community, a central tenet of the approach is the emphasis on self help and the belief in the influence of the group dynamic in facilitating therapeutic interventions. Written by academics and practitioners from around the world, this is a comprehensive overview of the development of therapeutic communities and their benefits in the treatment of drug users. Contributors describe how the model operates in the community, and how it has been modified over time to fit different settings, different types of client and different referral requirements. Illustrated by descriptions of staff and client experiences, this book also provides an inside view of how this sort of therapeutic community actually operates. This authoritative study concludes by examining the research evidence for treatment effectiveness. It will be of interest to policy makers, managers and researchers in the field of drug abuse treatment.

Gary Forrest
R2,456 Discovery Miles 24 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Shunning the disease model of alcoholism, this book delineates how narcissistic injury in early life acts as the basic psychogenic, etiological, component of addictive drinking. It provides an innovative analysis of the interrelationships between the alcoholic's overt behavioral disorders and his or her psychological make_up. Early chapters explore the role of narcissistic injury in great depth. Successive discussions examine the pathologies of character, personality, behavior, cognition and interpersonal relationships that manifest themselves in and as alcoholism. The part that early-life narcissistic injury plays in the development of anxiety, oral rage, avoidance defenses, depression, sadomasochism, paranoia, guilt, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors is detailed. A veteran of extensive work with alcoholics, the author delineates treatment strategies to modify and resolve the alcoholic's symptoms_the drinking disorder as well as the other psychological manifestations of dysfunction. Among the strategies explored in this regard are analytic, family, conjoint, behavioral, confrontation, supportive and self-help modalities. The trenchant case studies found throughout the text amplify the author's points about the global and specific psychopathology of alcoholism as well as the interventive alternatives. Alcoholism, Narcissism, and Psychopathology will prove stimulating and resourceful to psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, counselors and therapists who are involved in the treatment and rehabilitation of alcoholics and other substance abusers.
