The Anglican Canons, 1529-1947 (Hardcover, annotated edition): Gerald Bray The Anglican Canons, 1529-1947 (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Gerald Bray
R3,460 Discovery Miles 34 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A essential reference work for the history of the Church of England and Anglican canon law. This volume is a major new scholarly edition of some of the most important sources in the history of the Anglican Church. It includes all the canons produced by the Church of England, from the opening of the Reformation parliamentin 1529 to 1947. Most of the material comes from the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, among which the canons of 1529, 1603 and 1640, and Cardinal Pole's legatine constitutions of 1556, are of particular importance. Butthe volume also includes the first scholarly editions of the deposited canons of 1874 and 1879 and the proposed canons of 1947. In addition, it includes both the Irish canons of 1634 and the Scottish canons of 1636. The canons areaccompanied by a substantial number of supplementary texts and appendixes, illustrating their sources and development; Latin texts are accompanied by parallel English translations, and the editor provides a full scholarly apparatus, which is particularly valuable for its identification of the sources of the various canons. The texts are preceded by an extended introduction, which provides not only an up-to-date analysis of the framing and significance ofeach set of canons, but also critical discussions of the origins and development of canon law and the system of ecclesiastical courts. It is an essential work of reference for anyone interested in the history of the Church of England since the Reformation, or in Anglican canon law. GERALD BRAYis Anglican Professor of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University.

Let the Children Come to Communion (Paperback): Stephen Lake Let the Children Come to Communion (Paperback)
Stephen Lake
R352 Discovery Miles 3 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

'Children are equal members of the Church by virtue of their baptism', writes Stephen Lake 'and therefore should have full access to the sacraments, the signs of God's love, and most especially to the bread and wine of the Eucharist.' This valuable resource book will assist all parishes in welcoming children to communion now that the Church of England has approved new Regulations. Let the Children Come to Communion: encourages the admission of baptized children to communion; summarizes in one place relevant practice, information and theology; shares the experience of those who have already taken this step; aims to help move the debate on, encouraging the Church into full participation. The author's fervent hope is to stir the Church into action on an important issue and to stimulate decision-making about introducing and developing this ministry with children. There are extended interviews with leading practitioners including: David Stancliffe, Stephen Venner, Diana Murrie, Margaret Withers and Mark Russell. Stephen Lake is Sub Dean and Canon Residentiary of St. Albans Cathedral. Stephen served his curacy at Sherborne Abbey before becoming Vicar of Branksome St. Aldhelm, an urban parish in Poole. He was also Rural Dean. After nine years in Branksome he moved to St. Albans in 2001. He is married to Carol and they have three children, all of whom receive Holy Communion. He is the author of the hugely successful Confirmation Prayer Book (SPCK), and also of Using Common Worship: Marriage (Church House Publishing). "Stephen Lake has written a fine, timely guide to the current discussion. I hope his vision will invite and persuade, and that we shall as a Church continue to discover the riches that await us as we listen more thoughtfully and generously to Christ's youngest friends" Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury

R754 Discovery Miles 7 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Oxford Movement was the beginning of a re-formation of Anglican theology, ministries, congregational and religious life revivals, and ritualism, with its theological basis a retrieval of the patristic and medieval eras, reconstructed around a deep christological incarnationalism. Does it merit its description by Eamon Duffy as the single most significant force in the formation of modern Anglicanism? In Grace and Incarnation, Bruce D. Griffith and Jason R. Radcliff explore this theological richness with unparalleled clarity. They interrogate the potential link between Robert Isaac Wilberforce and Charles Gore and the Liberal Catholics, and examine the interrelation between Tractarian theology and the rise of what was to become 'modernism', with its new canons of authentication. In doing so, they not only offer a mirror to the past, but shed new light on what Anglicanism today.

Charles Taylor and Anglican Theology - Aesthetic Ecclesiology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): J A Franklin Charles Taylor and Anglican Theology - Aesthetic Ecclesiology (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
J A Franklin
R3,103 Discovery Miles 31 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book considers the work of Charles Taylor from a theological perspective, specifically relating to the topic of ecclesiology. It argues that Taylor and related thinkers such as John Milbank and Rowan Williams point towards an "Aesthetic Ecclesiology," an ecclesiology that values highly and utilizes the aesthetic in its self-understanding and practice. Jamie Franklin argues that Taylor's work provides an account of the breakdown in Modernity of the conceptual relationship of the immanent and the transcendent, and that the work of John Milbank and radical orthodoxy give a complementary account of the secular from a more metaphysical angle. Franklin also incorporates the work of Rowan Williams, which provides us a way of thinking about the Church that is rooted in a material and historical legacy. The central argument is that the reconnection of the transcendent and the immanent coheres with an understanding of the Church that incorporates the material reality of the sacraments, the importance of artistic beauty and craftsmanship, and the Church's status as historical, global, and eschatological. Secondly, the aesthetic provides the Church with a powerful apologetic: beauty cannot be reduced to the presuppositions of secular materialism, and so must be accounted for by recourse to transcendent categories.

John Jewel and the English National Church - The Dilemmas of an Erastian Reformer (Hardcover): Gary W Jenkins John Jewel and the English National Church - The Dilemmas of an Erastian Reformer (Hardcover)
Gary W Jenkins
R4,649 Discovery Miles 46 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John Jewel (1522-1571) has long been regarded as one of the key figures in the shaping of the Anglican Church. A Marian exile, he returned to England upon the accession of Elizabeth I, and was appointed bishop of Salisbury in 1560 and wrote his famous Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae two years later. The most recent monographs on Jewel, now over forty years old, focus largely on his theology, casting him as deft scholar, adept humanist, precursor to Hooker, arbiter of Anglican identity and seminal mind in the formation of Anglicanism. Yet in light of modern research it is clear that much of this does not stand up to closer examination. In this work, Gary Jenkins argues that, far from serving as the constructor of a positive Anglican identity, Jewel's real contribution pertains to the genesis of its divided and schizophrenic nature. Drawing on a variety of sources and scholarship, he paints a picture not of a theologian and humanist, but an orator and rhetorician, who persistently breached the rules of logic and the canons of Renaissance humanism in an effort to claim polemical victory over his traditionalist opponents such as Thomas Harding. By taking such an iconoclastic approach to Jewel, this work not only offers a radical reinterpretation of the man, but of the Church he did so much to shape. It provides a vivid insight into the intent and ends of Jewel with respect to what he saw the Church of England under the Elizabethan settlement to be, as well as into the unintended consequences of his work. In so doing, it demonstrates how he used his Patristic sources, often uncritically and faultily, as foils against his theological interlocutors, and without the least intention of creating a coherent theological system.

Enlightenment Prelate - Benjamin Hoadly, 1676-1761 (Paperback): William Gibson Enlightenment Prelate - Benjamin Hoadly, 1676-1761 (Paperback)
William Gibson
R1,188 Discovery Miles 11 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Benjamin Hoadly, Bishop successively of Bangor, Hereford, Salisbury and Winchester, was the most controversial English churchman of the eighteenth century, and he has unjustly gained the reputation of a negligent and political bishop. His sermon on the nature of Christ's kingdom sparked the Bangorian controversy, which raged from 1717 to 1720 and generated hundreds of books, tracts and sermons, while his commitment to the Whigs and the cause of toleration for Dissenters earned him the antagonism of many contemporary and later churchmen. In this powerfully revisionist study, Hoadly emerges as a dedicated and conscientious bishop with strong and progressive principles. His commitment to the ideology of the Revolution of 1688 and to the comprehension of Dissenters into the Church of England are revealed as the principal motives for his work as a preacher, author and bishop. Gibson also shows how Hoadly's stout defence of rationalism made him a contributor to the English Enlightenment, while his commitment to civil liberties made him a progenitor of the American Revolution. Above all, however, the goal of reuniting of English Protestants remained the heart of Hoadly's legacy.

A Man Called Mark - The Biography of Bishop Mark Dyer (Paperback): Tom Linthicum A Man Called Mark - The Biography of Bishop Mark Dyer (Paperback)
Tom Linthicum; Foreword by Rowan Williams
R527 Discovery Miles 5 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

* Well-known and well-loved bishop of the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion This official biography tells the compelling story of the Rt. Rev. Mark Dyer: Irish Catholic boy from New Hampshire, U.S. Navy vet, Roman Catholic then Episcopal priest, bishop, and seminary professor-and one of the most influential, beloved leaders of the American Episcopal Church and the worldwide Anglican Communion. Following a dispute with ecclesiastical authorities, Dyer left the Roman Church for the Anglican Church of Canada. Later received as priest in the Episcopal Church, his gifts as teacher, preacher, and pastor were recognized with election as Bishop of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. There, he established a new model of leadership, delegating administrative duties to concentrate on spiritual direction, pastoral care, and creating mission projects at every church in his diocese. Also renowned as a story-teller, many of his favorite stories appear here, told in his own voice. Called by leadership of the Anglican Communion to a variety of roles, for more than 20 years Bishop Dyer was on the front lines of the most contentious issues facing the church throughout the world, including ordination of women and gay people. He also was co-chair of the ecumenical dialogue between the Anglican and Eastern Orthodox Churches, which produced a landmark agreement after 17 years of meetings.

Black and Episcopalian - The Struggle for Inclusion (Paperback): Gayle Fisher-Stewart Black and Episcopalian - The Struggle for Inclusion (Paperback)
Gayle Fisher-Stewart; Foreword by Kelly Brown Douglas
R486 Discovery Miles 4 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A personal story of the struggle for authentic inclusion in the church. From a strong voice in the dialogue about what Black lives matter means in relation to faith, a powerful lament and a hopeful message about the future. Historically, to be Episcopal/Anglican, as it was to be American, was to be white. Assimilation to whiteness has been a measure of success and acceptance, yet, assimilation requires that people of color give up something of themselves and deny parts of their heritage including religious practices that sustained their ancestors. Despite the fact that Blackness is on display on Black History Month for example, and Black/African heritage is given primacy in the liturgy, music, and preaching during that time, at other times this doesn't seem to be the case. The author argues that whiteness is embedded in every aspect of religious life, from seminary to Christian education to last rites. Is it possible to be Black and Episcopalian and not feel alien, she asks. In her words we learn that inclusivity, above all, must be authentic.

Unexpected Consequences - The Diaconate Renewed (Paperback, large type edition): Susanne Watson Epting Unexpected Consequences - The Diaconate Renewed (Paperback, large type edition)
Susanne Watson Epting
R552 Discovery Miles 5 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A critical look at the diaconate in the Episcopal Church Times change, and the Order of Deacons in the Episcopal Church has not remained static. While the book seeks to update contemporary knowledge about deacons, it also shows how the diaconate may be well positioned to lead the church into change that cuts across governance, formation, and ministry. While the institutional church struggles with its structure and purpose, working to change its reality and perception, the book suggests that there are diaconal leaders who have been working all along for this kind of change. The book chronicles ways in which one church order has grown, matured, adapted, adjusted, and is as effective as it is because of its dynamic nature. It is hoped that other orders might learn from the importance of being adaptable, contextual, and baptismal, while highlighting the primary lens deacons look through as they seek to fulfill what the church has called them to do.

Father Tim's Church Survival Guide (Paperback, large type edition): Tim Schenck Father Tim's Church Survival Guide (Paperback, large type edition)
Tim Schenck
R452 Discovery Miles 4 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

""If you have little tolerance for ecclesiastical blowhards; if you've ever fantasized about implementing a clergy rating system (CRS); if you've ever sought tips on surviving diocesan convention; if you've ever tried to weasel your way out of pledging; then this book is for you," says author Tim Schenck. "My take on church life isn't for everyone-clergy who take themselves too seriously will hate it. But know that it all comes out of a place of deep love for God and the Church. There are inevitably things that drive us nuts about such an imperfect (i.e., human) institution. Yet if we can't observe and comment on our own foibles we're left without much hope. And anyway if God doesn't have a sense of humor, I'm hosed.""

Episcopal Etiquette And Ethics - Living The Craft Of Priesthood In The Episcopal Church (Paperback): James Barney Hawkins IV Episcopal Etiquette And Ethics - Living The Craft Of Priesthood In The Episcopal Church (Paperback)
James Barney Hawkins IV
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A distinctive resource that deals with all the practicalities of the Episcopal culture for those preparing for--and exercising--ministry in the Episcopal Church Answers neglected yet difficult questions around clothes (not just clerical attire), money, relationships and conversation A "complete guide to a sub-culture," that can help clergy person serve the Episcopal Church more effectively

What is the appropriate attire for an Episcopal priest at the events associated with the service in the Book of Common Prayer, the Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage? What does it mean to be an icon of Christ at a cocktail party? How does one live with sensitive confidential information from a parishioner? These questions might seem almost trivial yet are deeply serious. The Episcopal Church is a distinctive culture: effective ministry needs an understanding of the distinctive Episcopal culture.

At one level, this is a book that introduces and explains the Episcopal faith to a potential priest who wants to be effective in this world. At another level, this book is a reflection on the meaning and nature of the holy mystery of priesthood.

Drawing upon his rich parish experience in the Episcopal Church, Hawkins distils a wealth of practical experience and tips to enhance the training of seminarians and the ministries of established priests. Hawkins takes the reader through the pastoral offices with theological reflection and vignettes in order to encourage good priestly habits. Ideal reading for anyone wishing to serve the Episcopal Church in an ordained capacity. "

Liturgical Sense - The Logic of Rite (Paperback, large type edition): Louis Weil Liturgical Sense - The Logic of Rite (Paperback, large type edition)
Louis Weil
R426 Discovery Miles 4 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Louis Weil looks back on his work shaping the liturgical life of the Episcopal Church through his involvement with the development of The 1979 Book of Common Prayer- and looks forward to the future of the church and its liturgical life. Through stories and first-person anecdotes, Weil does "narrative theology" as only he can. Although most points of reference are to the 1979 BCP, the book is aiming at a more fundamental level-not just Episcopal or even Anglican liturgy, but liturgical rites as such: how do they "do what they do"?-or NOT do when they are done badly! "Liturgical Sense" is two dimensional: both the "common sense" of liturgical rites and also their "aesthetic sense." It is Dr. Weil's contention that in American culture we have an inherent inability to "think symbolically." Dr. Weil seeks to encourage a return to "liturgical sense" across the church.

Beating the Boundaries - The Church God Is Calling Us to Be (Paperback): John Spicer Beating the Boundaries - The Church God Is Calling Us to Be (Paperback)
John Spicer
R456 Discovery Miles 4 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

- For established churches needing to adapt to changing times - Translates learnings from new communities for established congregations -- a both/and approach - On-the-ground observations from within Phyllis Tickle's "rummage sale" Using the image of the traditional practice of "beating the bounds" of the parish, this book contrasts the desire to mark boundaries with God's call to explore boundaries in order to open them. Building on visits to nine Episcopal and Church of England congregations, Spicer explores how they are opening the boundaries between inherited expressions of church and the unique contexts in which they find themselves. He argues that to beat the boundaries around their current expressions of church, congregations should (1) name a missional identity common to both their past expressions of congregational life and the church they hear God calling them to become; (2) identify whom they're seeking to reach in the community and how they intend to do so; (3) identify what sort of new church expression God is calling them to create; (4) empower a missional leader and plan for governance issues their work may raise; and (5) collaboratively identify how to define success and how to understand what might be seen as failure in terms of common church metrics.
