The timeless classic updated for a new generation of sports fans When it was first published in 1970, Miracle on 33rd Street pushed the envelope of sports journalism and created a story that had never been told in any previous book about basketball. In his enthralling account of the Knicks first NBA championship, from preseason to play-offs, Phil Berger doesnt just cover the baseline jumpers and backdoor passes; he takes readers out of bounds to capture the whole story in all its gritty details-from the anguished cries of legendary coach Red Holzman shouting at his team to See the ball, to the beer-swilling fans shouting at the players and spitting on the court, to life on the road, in and out of hotels. This Contemporary Sports Classic includes an introduction by Marv Albert, longtime voice of the Knicks. A brilliant, moody, tricky book that shifts from quick description to fascinating chunks of self-revealing monologues . . . to clear and nontechnical explanations of how Bill Bradley and Walt Frazier executed the backdoor play, and how the Knicks won the world championship. --Robert Lipsyte, New York Times
The world listens when Michael Jordan speaks Here is just a sample of what you’ll find inside: "People can fly. Some fly higher than others, that’s all." "You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise." "My heroes were my parents. I can’t see having anyone else as my heroes." "Confidence allows you to progress in something you’re attempting to accomplish, whether it’s playing basketball or baseball, or whether it’s trying to succeed in business." "This is going to sound wild–but my ultimate dream is to get a potbelly." (This book has not been prepared, approved, licensed, or endorsed by Michael Jordan.)
The history of blacktop basketball in fast-paced words and pictures. A New York street hustler. A lonely man in a Maryland prison. A confused Native American on a reservation in Idaho. What do they all have in common? They are among the best pickup basketball players in the country. In Pickup Artists, Lars Anderson and Chad Millman tell the complete story of the street game from its mythical past to its glorious present. Using original reporting to examine the evolution of playground basketball, Anderson and Millman are the first journalists to unravel the thickly woven tapestry of the sport's subculture. Today's super-hyped, corporate-sponsored tournaments weren't always the norm. The foundation of the game was laid with sweat in the 1920s and it has grown from a rudimentary sport to a sophisticated exhibition. Basketball is more than macho melodramas acted out in America's inner cities. It's a town meeting in the heart of Indiana and symbol of freedom for prisoners in jail. Anderson and Millman tap into the essence of pickup basketball, examining its importance everywhere the game is played. They profile not just legends like Earl Marigault and Joe Hammond, but players like Fred "Spook" Stegman, the man who carries the legacy of being the first to connect the playgrounds with colleges, and Gregory Vaughn, whose tragic death in the 1980s exposed the underground world of drugs in basketball. Forget about the NBA and showtime. Pickup basketball is about basketball on the blacktops, at its most basic level. It's about the unusual lives of some of the nation's best players you've never heard of. Until now.
Was there really professional basketball before the NBA? Indeed there was. It was a rugged game but one that continued to evolve swiftly from its invention in 1891. The original Celtics were at the vanguard of this creation and development. The team began as a local group of young Irishmen from the Hell's Kitchen area of New York City in 1914. Through shrewd acquisitions of top players, they were transformed into the most powerful basketball team of their time. In the period from 1919 to 1928 the Celtics won over seven hundred games with fewer than sixty losses. This book chronicles the team, the players, the league seasons and the early era of professional basketball.

Known as the "Man in the Brown Suit" and the "Baron of the Bluegrass," Adolph Rupp (1901--1977) is a towering figure in the history of college athletics. In Adolph Rupp and the Rise of Kentucky Basketball, historian James Duane Bolin goes beyond the wins and losses to present the fullest account of Rupp's life to date based on more than one-hundred interviews with Rupp, his assistant coaches, former players, University of Kentucky presidents and faculty members, and his admirers and critics, as well as court transcripts, newspaper accounts, and other archival materials. His teams won four NCAA championships (1948, 1949, 1951, and 1958), the 1946 National Invitation Tournament title, and twenty-seven Southeastern Conference regular season titles. Rupp's influence on the game of college basketball and his impact on Kentucky culture are both much broader than his impressive record on the court. Bolin covers Rupp's early years -- from his rural upbringing in a German Mennonite family in Halstead, Kansas, through his undergraduate years at the University of Kansas playing on teams coached by Phog Allen and taking classes with James Naismith, the inventor of basketball -- to his success at Kentucky. This revealing portrait of a pivotal figure in American sports also exposes how college basketball changed, for better or worse, in the twentieth century.
A prominent Navajo educator once told historian Peter Iverson that 'the five major sports on the Navajo Nation are basketball, basketball, basketball, basketball, and rodeo.' The Native American passion for basketball extends far beyond the Navajo, whether on reservations or in cities, among the young and the old. Why basketball - a relatively new sport - should hold such a place in Native culture is the question Wade Davies takes up in Native Hoops. Indian basketball was born of hard times and hard places, its evolution traceable back to the boarding schools or 'Indian schools' of the early twentieth century. Davies describes the ways in which the sport, plied as a tool of social control and cultural integration, was adopted and transformed by Native students for their own purposes, ultimately becoming the 'Rez ball' that embodies Native American experience, identity, and community. Native Hoops travels the continent, from Alaska to North Carolina, tying the rise of basketball - and Native sports history - to sweeping educational, economic, social, and demographic trends through the course of the twentieth century. Along the way, the book highlights the toils and triumphs of well-known athletes, like Jim Thorpe and the 1904 Fort Shaw girl's team, even as it brings to light the remarkable accomplishments of those whom history has, until now, left behind. The first comprehensive history of American Indian basketball, Native Hoops tells a story of hope, achievement, and celebration - a story that reveals the redemptive power of sport and the transcendent spirit of Native culture.
Along with the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, both of which have been the subject of "50 Greatest" treatments by Bob Cohen, the Boston Celtics is one of the most iconic professional basketball teams, representing a multi-state region rather than just a city or state. Some of the sport's greatest played for the Celtics: Bill Russell in the 1950s, John Havlicek in the 70s, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parrish in the 80s, and recently Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. Sports historian Robert W. Cohen has chosen the best to ever wear the uniform, and he provides a short biographical profile, key stats, and details about each players exploits on the court.
One of the most successful basketball coaches in the nation, Coach Roy Williams has traveled an unlikely path. In "Hard Work," he tells the story of his life, from his turbulent childhood through a coaching career with the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. and in a new afterword, Williams takes us past the two NCAA Championship titles to the subsequent season, with its shake-up losses and the unexpected departure of key players, to a new season coaching some of the most dazzling players in the country to an ACC regular-season championship.Williams recounts how he recruits, teaches, and motivates his players; how he's shepherded teams through some of the most nail-biting games at both Kansas and UNC; and how he coached his team through one of the roughest seasons of his tenure and came out the other side to be awarded 2011 ACC Coach of the Year. So far, the Hall of Famer has coached in seven Final Fours, winning two NCAA championships within five seasons.
It ought to be just a game, but basketball on the playgrounds of Coney Island is much more than that -- for many young men it represents their only hope of escape from a life of crime, poverty, and despair. In The Last Shot, Darcy Frey chronicles the aspirations of four of the neighborhood's most promising players. What they have going for them is athletic talent, grace, and years of dedication. But working against them are woefully inadequate schooling, family circumstances that are often desperate, and the slick, brutal world of college athletic recruitment. Incisively and compassionately written, The Last Shot introduces us to unforgettable characters and takes us into their world with an intimacy seldom seen in contemporary journalism. The result is a startling and poignant expose of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball.
In this book, Bill Reynolds journeys with a high school basketball team through the past and present of an American town. Fall River, Massachusetts, is a once-prosperous industrial center haunted by its history, a blue-collar town facing hard times and an uncertain future. Each autumn, however, the Durfee High School basketball team begins its annual drive for a state championship: a quest that inspires and sometimes consumes kids, coaches, families, teachers, and all of Fall River.
