We all know what it’s like to eat an unbalanced diet or consume too many sweets. We feel sick, light-headed, and occasionally depressed, or we become irritated and edgy. It’s the body’s way of letting us know that it’s lacking sufficient nourishment. Optimal health requires optimal nutrition. The same is true, spiritually speaking. Without sufficient and regular biblical nutrition, our inner lives begin to suffer the consequences. We become shallow and selfish, more demanding, and less gentle. We react impatiently, rashly, and angrily. These are tell-tale signs of inner malnutrition.

In God’s Word for You: An Invitation to Find the Nourishment Your Soul Needs, respected Bible teacher Chuck Swindoll shows us how to dig into Scripture and uncover its profound truths for our lives. Chuck invites us to sit down and feast on the truths found in God’s Word.

The Strong and the Weak - Romans 14.1-15.13 in Context (Hardcover): Mark Reasoner The Strong and the Weak - Romans 14.1-15.13 in Context (Hardcover)
Mark Reasoner
R3,220 Discovery Miles 32 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book situates Romans 14.1-15.13 in the context of first-century Roman thought, from the perspective of asceticism (especially vegetarianism), superstition, and obligation. It seeks to situate this section of Romans within the letter as a whole, and concludes that the section illustrates the theme of the letter: that Paul, his gospel, and those who follow it are not shameful. New contributions to Romans research surface through a fresh examination of the terms "strong" and "weak" in light of their use within Roman social discourse.

What Did Jesus Mean? - Explaining the Sermon on the Mount and the Parables in Simple and Universal Human Concepts (Hardcover):... What Did Jesus Mean? - Explaining the Sermon on the Mount and the Parables in Simple and Universal Human Concepts (Hardcover)
Anna Wierzbicka
R3,082 Discovery Miles 30 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this highly interdisciplinary work, linguist Anna Wierzbicka casts new light on the words of Jesus by taking her well-known semantic theory of "universal human concepts"- concepts which are intuitively understandable and self-explanatory across languages-and bringing it to bear on Jesus' parables and the Sermon on the Mount. Her approach results in strikingly novel interpretations of the Gospels. Written in dialogue with other biblical commentators, What Did Jesus Mean? is scholarly, rigorous, and yet accessible.

Pam Rhodes is a passionate advocate for our heritage of splendid hymns. Hymns, she explains, help us respond to God: they are "prayers in our pockets". With her warm personal touch she describes how these hymns came to be written, and considers the perceptions they contain. This book is a treasury of fascinating detail, but it is also a source of devotion: as you consider each hymn and the story behind it you will be drawn into worship. Each reflection concludes with a short prayer.

Touch the Wounds - On Suffering, Trust, and Transformation (Hardcover): Tomas Halik Touch the Wounds - On Suffering, Trust, and Transformation (Hardcover)
Tomas Halik; Translated by Gerald Turner
R660 R587 Discovery Miles 5 870 Save R73 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this masterfully written book, Tomas Halik calls upon Christians to touch the wounds of the world and to rediscover their own faith by loving and healing their neighbors. One of the most important voices in contemporary Catholicism, Tomas Halik argues that Christians can discover the clearest vision of God not by turning away from suffering but by confronting it. Halik calls upon us to follow the apostle Thomas's example: to see the pain, suffering, and poverty of our world and to touch those wounds with faith and action. It is those expressions of love and service, Halik reveals, that restore our hope and the courage to live, allowing true holiness to manifest itself. Only face-to-face with a wounded Christ can we lay down our armor and masks, revealing our own wounds and allowing healing to begin. Weaving together deep theological and philosophical reflections with surprising, trenchant, and even humorous commentary on the times in which we live, Halik offers a new prescription for those lost in moments of doubt, abandonment, or suffering. Rather than demanding impossible, flawless faith, we can look through our doubt to see, touch, and confront the wounds in the hearts of our neighbors and-through that wounded humanity, which the Son of God took upon himself-see God.

In the Fever of Love - An Illumination of the Song of Songs (Hardcover): Shefa Gold In the Fever of Love - An Illumination of the Song of Songs (Hardcover)
Shefa Gold; Illustrated by Phillip Ratner; Foreword by Robert Corin Morris
R861 Discovery Miles 8 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

You don't have to be a mystic to enjoy Rabbi Shefa Gold's new commentary on the Song of Songs, but it may make you into one. Rather than address herself to the reader, she speaks directly, and passionately, to God, The Beloved. She invites us to share in her conversation with life itself, with the mystery that wells "at the center of every molecule, at the heart of my being." IN THE FEVER OF LOVE breathes new life into the ancient practice of both Jews and Christians to read the Song as an allegory of the love between God and human beings. This rich, poetic text of can be used for pondering, praying, and perceiving life in a deeper way by people of any faith, but remains deeply rooted in Judaism's down-to-earth approach to the world. Rabbi Gold brings a modern psychological awareness to this ancient text. For those who want specific directions, she appends ten "commandments" from the Song which can be maxims for daily living.

Mark and its Subalterns - A Hermeneutical Paradigm for a Postcolonial Context (Hardcover, New): David Joy Mark and its Subalterns - A Hermeneutical Paradigm for a Postcolonial Context (Hardcover, New)
David Joy
R4,471 Discovery Miles 44 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book offers a fresh appraisal of the identity and involvement of the subalterns in Mark, arguing that the presence of the subalterns in Mark is a possible hermeneutical tool for re-reading the Bible in a postcolonial context like India.Part I -Hermeneutics: General Methodological Considerations paves the way for a creative discussion on Mark and its interpreters in the rest of the study by looking at the issue of the spread of Christianity and missionary attempts at biblical interpretations that did not take the life of the natives into account. Many insights from the postcolonial situation can be found in the contextual interpretations such as liberation, feminist, postcolonial feminist and subaltern.Part II- Mark: Context and Interpretation considers colonial rule in Palestine and examines some Markan texts showing the potential role of the subalterns. It is argued that due to colonial rule, the native people suffered in terms of their identity, religion and culture. There was conflict between Galilee and Jerusalem mainly on religious issues. The victims of domination were the poor peasants and the artisans in Galilee.A dialogue and interaction with the Markan milieu was possible in the research and so the marginal and subaltern groups were effectively understood by exegeting Mark 10: 17-31, 7: 24-30 and 5: 1-20 and showing the postcolonial issues such as the poor and their representation, gender, race, hybridity, class, nationalism, and purity respectively. The subalterns were mainly associated with movements of resistance in Palestine. The Markan proclamation of solidarity with those subalterns is significant. The general conclusion presents the implications of this interpretationfor a hermeneutical paradigm for a postcolonial context.

The Epistle to the Ephesians (Hardcover, New edition): John Muddiman The Epistle to the Ephesians (Hardcover, New edition)
John Muddiman
R6,630 Discovery Miles 66 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this new commentary Muddiman questions the assumption that if Ephesians is not by Paul it must be wholly accounted for as an example of post-Pauline pseudepigraphy. He explores an alternative: that it is an authentic letter subsequently edited and expanded with the aim of adjusting the Pauline tradition to meet a new situation. All the perspectives of major modern scholars are discussed and assessed particularly on the question of Ephesians' relationship to Colossians. The implications for the question of the authorship on Paul's theology are extensively explored.

Genesis - Translation and Commentary (Paperback, New Ed): Robert Alter Genesis - Translation and Commentary (Paperback, New Ed)
Robert Alter
R521 R491 Discovery Miles 4 910 Save R30 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Robert Alter sets a new standard in the translation of this formative book of the Hebrew Bible.

Genesis begins with the making of heaven and earth and all life, and ends with the image of a mummy—Joseph's—in a coffin. In between come many of the primal stories in Western culture: Adam and Eve's expulsion from the garden of Eden, Cain's murder of Abel, Noah and the Flood, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham's binding of Isaac, the covenant of God and Abraham, Isaac's blessing of Jacob in place of Esau, the saga of Joseph and his brothers.

In Robert Alter's brilliant translation, these stories cohere in a powerful narrative of the tortuous relations between fathers and sons, husbands and wives, eldest and younger brothers, God and his chosen people, the people of Israel and their neighbors. Alter's translation honors the meanings and literary strategies of the ancient Hebrew and conveys them in fluent English prose. It recovers a Genesis with the continuity of theme and motif of a wholly conceived and fully realized book. His insightful, fully informed commentary illuminates the book in all its dimensions.

The Bridegroom Messiah and the People of God - Marriage in the Fourth Gospel (Hardcover): Jocelyn McWhirter The Bridegroom Messiah and the People of God - Marriage in the Fourth Gospel (Hardcover)
Jocelyn McWhirter
R2,812 Discovery Miles 28 120 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Many interpreters of the Fourth Gospel detect allusions to biblical texts about marriage, but none offers a comprehensive analysis of these proposed allusions or a convincing explanation for their presence. Building on the work of Richard Hays, Donald Juel and Craig Koester, in this 2006 book Jocelyn McWhirter argues that John alludes to biblical texts about marriage in order to develop a metaphor for Jesus and how he relates to his followers. According to McWhirter, John chooses these texts because he uses a first-century exegetical convention to interpret them as messianic prophecies in light of an accepted messianic text. Specifically, he uses verbal parallels to link them to Psalm 45, a wedding song for God's anointed king. He then draws on them to portray Jesus as a bridegroom-Messiah and to depict Jesus' relationship with his followers in terms of marriage.

Jesus' Emotions in the Fourth Gospel (Hardcover): Stephen Voorwinde Jesus' Emotions in the Fourth Gospel (Hardcover)
Stephen Voorwinde
R6,309 Discovery Miles 63 090 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book seeks to discuss John's references to Jesus' emotions in the light of the current debate regarding Johannine Christology. The Fourth Gospel refers to Jesus' love, joy, and zeal. At times it also portrays him as troubled, deeply moved, and in tears. Do these expressions of emotion underscore Jesus' humanity or his divinity? The study is set against the background of the emotions of God as found in earlier Jewish literature, as well as against that of the emotions of Jesus in the Synoptics and the remainder of the New Testament. Voorwinde argues that the covenant provides the most consistent perspective for viewing both the emotions of Yahweh in the Old Testament and the emotions of Jesus in the Gospels. The Johannine Jesus is found to fulfil the hitherto incompatible roles of covenant Lord and covenant sacrifice. Rather than being expressive only of his humanity Jesus' emotions are also found to underscore his divinity. This is due to the unique genius of this Gospel with its paradoxical presentation of Jesus whose divinity is manifested most eloquently in his weakness, suffering, and death. Only his tears at the grave of Lazarus can be explained as a human emotion pure and simple. All the other emotions, because of their strong connections to the cross, highlight both Jesus' humanity and divinity, albeit for various reasons and in highly nuanced ways. JSNTS 284

Jacob & the Prodigal - How Jesus Retold Israel`s Story (Paperback, New): Kenneth E Bailey Jacob & the Prodigal - How Jesus Retold Israel`s Story (Paperback, New)
Kenneth E Bailey
R698 R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Save R78 (11%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Israel, the community to which Jesus belonged, took its name from their patriarch Jacob. His story of exile and return was their story as well. In the well-known tale of the prodigal son, Jesus reshaped the story in his own way and for his own purposes. In this work, Kenneth E. Bailey compares the Old Testament saga and the New Testament parable. He unpacks similarities freighted with theological significance and differences that often reveal Jesus' particular purposes. Drawing on a lifetime of study in both Middle Eastern culture and the Gospels, Bailey offers here a fresh view of how Jesus interpreted Israel's past, his present and their future.
