The gripping, true story of how leading Israeli journalist Amir Tibon,
along with his wife and their two young children, were rescued on 7
October 2023 by Tibon’s father ― an incredible tale of survival that
also reveals the tensions and failures that led to Hamas’s attacks that
day.
On that fateful day, Tibon and his wife were awakened by mortar rounds
exploding near their home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a progressive Israeli
settlement along the Gaza border. Soon, they were holding their two
young daughters in the family’s reinforced safe room, urging them not
to cry while they all listened to the gunfire from Hamas attackers
outside their windows. With his mobile phone battery running low, Amir
texted his father: ‘They’re here.’
Some 45 miles to the north, on the shores of Tel Aviv, Amir’s parents
saw the news at the same time as they received Amir’s note.
Immediately, they jumped in their car and raced toward Nahal Oz, armed
only with a pistol ― but intent on saving their family at all costs.
In The Gates of Gaza, Tibon tells his family’s harrowing story,
describing their terrifying ordeal ― and the bravery that led to their
rescue ― alongside the histories of the place they call home and the
systems of power that have kept them and their neighbours in Gaza in
harm’s way for decades. With sensitivity, and drawing on Israeli and
Palestinian sources, Tibon offers an unsparing but ultimately hopeful
view of this seemingly intractable conflict and its global
reverberations.
Die plaag is tegelykertyd reisverhaal, avontuurverhaal,
speurverhaal, natuurkundige artikel, letterkundige studie en
historiese ondersoek.
gebring.
Pennsylvania, first home of the Declaration of Independence and the
Constitution, has a tradition of political progress. However, along
with the good, the political playground of Pennsylvania has also
seen the brazenly bad behavior of its political leaders. For over
twenty-five years, political columnist John Baer has had a
front-row seat to the foibles and follies of the Keystone State's
political system. Baer takes readers through his memories of
covering state politics for the last quarter century, from
Democratic governor Milton Shapp's short-lived run for
president--in which he finished behind "no preference" in the
Florida primary--to highlights of some of the game-changing
campaign missteps and maneuvers that moved administrations in and
out of the capital. With a delightfully gruff wit, Baer gives
readers a behind-the-scenes view of the politics and personalities
that have passed through Harrisburg.
An inspiring and innovative guide towards living your best life - made
easy - from Venus Williams, one of the greatest tennis players of all
time.
Throughout Venus Williams' incredible career in tennis, she's been
asked almost every question imaginable. What she eats, how she trains,
what she does to unwind, and most frequently, how does she manage to do
it all?
Venus harnessed a rich blend of hard-won wisdom and core discipline to
achieve her goals while keeping a simple promise to herself: to keep
things fun. But after being diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune
disorder that affected her emotional and physical wellness, Venus's vow
was put to the test. She came up with the STRIVE strategy--a winning
combination of holistic and scientific approaches to wellness and
performance that focuses on making self-improvements reachable and
sustainable.
In STRIVE, readers will learn how eight tiny but essential tenets can
help turn smart choices into habits. And once that happens, you'll
forge a lifestyle you return to because you want to, not because you
have to-and that's when you start winning.
A love letter to a community of Trappist monks who provided family
when it was needed the most. This warmhearted memoir describes how
a small, insecure boy with a vibrant imagination found an unlikely
family in the company of monks at Holy Trinity Abbey, in the
mountains of rural Latter-day Saint Utah. Struggling with his
parents' recent divorce, Michael O'Brien discovered a community
filled with warmth, humor, idiosyncrasies, and most of all,
listening ears. Filled with anecdotes and delightful "behind the
scenes" descriptions of his experiences living alongside the monks
as they farmed, prayed, buried their dead, ate, and shared the joys
of life, Monastery Mornings speaks to the value of spiritual
fatherhood, the lasting impact of positive mentoring, and the
stability that the spiritual life can offer to people of all ages
and walks of life.

King of the Fells. Iron man. Lake District fell running legend.
Joss Naylor is all of these things and more. His achievements are
astounding, his records stand the test of time. In 1983 he
completed the 105-mile Lakes, Meres and Waters (LMW) route in a
staggering 19hr 14min and to this day, describes it as one of the
best routes he ever ran. High praise indeed and yet, so few know of
it. Part guidebook, part inspirational regaling, this book
interweaves tales of past and present as Naylor reflects on his
1983 epic on a re-walk 37 years later. In the company of
award-winning author, Vivienne Crow, Naylor recalls that magical
day, sharing stories and anecdotes from, not just his run, but the
1980s fell running scene, his working life and growing up in the
Wasdale Valley. Naylor's tales, together with breathtaking
photography, are accompanied by basic guide notes for the LMW
route, sticking as closely to his 1983 run as possible. These notes
divide the route into ten stages (ranging from 9 to 14 miles),
allowing runners and walkers to follow in the footsteps of the King
of the Fells, albeit on a more relaxed schedule. From Loweswater to
Over Water, visiting 27 of the Lake District's largest bodies of
water, the LMW route guarantees vistas of unparalleled beauty and
an unforgettable experience in true fell country.
The world's most famous mountain, Everest remains for serious
high-altitude climbers an ultimate goal. Ed Viesturs has gone on
eleven expeditions to Everest, reaching the summit seven times.
He's spent more than two years of his life on the mountain. No
climber today is better poised to survey Everest's various
ascents-both personal and historic. In The Mountain, Viesturs
delivers just that: riveting you-are-there accounts of his own
climbs as well as vivid narratives of some of the more famous and
infamous climbs throughout the last century, when the honour of
nations often hung in the balance, depending on which climbers
summited first. In addition to his own experiences, Viesturs sheds
light on the fate of Mallory and Irvine, whose 1924 disappearance
just 800 feet from the top remains one of mountaineering's greatest
mysteries, and on the multiply tragic last days of Rob Hall and
Scott Fischer in 1996, the stuff of which Into Thin Air was made.
Informed by the experience of one who has truly been there, The
Mountainaffords a rare glimpse into that place on earth where
Heraclitus's maxim-character is destiny-is proved time and again.
Complete with gorgeous photos of Everest, many of which were taken
by Viesturs himself, and shots taken on some of the legendary
historic climbs, The Mountainis an immensely appealing book for
active and armchair climber alike.
Pringle's autobiography offers a graphic and often painful account
of his experiences with major marathons, including the Marathon des
Sables and the Yukon Arctic Ultra. Journalists and scientists
monitor his progress as he pushes his body to the very limits, as
he competes in extreme sporting events which have already claimed
lives. A growing sense of self-knowledge and a sense of unity with
the natural world lead him to overcome his inner demons, and to
find a distinctive and transformational spiritual path.

From Josh Brolin, a unique and decidedly un-celebrity memoir, by turns
affecting, funny, uncanny, and unforgettable. A remarkable and an
unforgettable read.
Weaving a latticework of different strands, moving back and forth
through time, Josh Brolin captures a life marked by curiosity, pain,
devotion, kindness, humor. He recounts an unconventional childhood far
from Hollywood. Raised on a ranch in Paso Robles, California, he was
surrounded as a child by the wolves, cougars and other wild animals
gathered by his fearless and explosive mother, Jane Agee Brolin. Her
tragic, early death haunts this book, and the force of her
unforgettable personality is felt throughout.
Brolin also brings to life his career in the film industry —from his
breakout role in The Goonies to the set of No Country for Old Men—and
the professional and personal ups and downs in between and since. With
unflinching honesty but also great humor, he shares insights into
relationships, addiction, love and fatherhood, while letting the white
space in between words speak for itself. Grappling with the mysteries
of life and death in a way that will catch readers by surprise, From
Under the Truck is an audacious and riveting memoir from a born writer.
