Terreur En Bevryding - Die ANC/SAKP, Die Kommunisme En Geweld (1961-1990) (Afrikaans, Paperback): Leopold Scholtz Terreur En Bevryding - Die ANC/SAKP, Die Kommunisme En Geweld (1961-1990) (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Leopold Scholtz
R598 Discovery Miles 5 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

R391 Discovery Miles 3 910 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

Hustling, Happiness, And A Blow-Up Doll Named Percy - An Unusual Guide To Success And Contentment (Paperback): Dale Hefer Hustling, Happiness, And A Blow-Up Doll Named Percy - An Unusual Guide To Success And Contentment (Paperback)
Dale Hefer
R403 Discovery Miles 4 030 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

A compelling, diverse, and often bizarre array of anecdotes that will help you navigate your business and personal lives in this most peculiar of worlds.

What do the knees of a deputy president, a blow-up doll and a model with big nipples have in common? They all taught the author valuable life lessons. Hustling, Happiness, and a Blow-Up Doll Named Percy tells moving personal stories from Dale Hefer’s life: from an award-winning marketing career culminating in becoming businesswoman of the year to her journey to sobriety, and provides key lessons and essential life and business tips. For example, why everyone needs a ‘Percy’ (a creative idea or simply the drive to do what one must to get things done). In addition to her own conclusions, Dale draws on the wisdom of her favourite philosophers – the Stoics, business partners, friends and, of course, her mum!

Using real-life experiences and humorous stories, Dale Hefer shows how to make some sense of this strange world and shares tips about how to navigate it so you, too, can find your own brand of happiness and learn sound business lessons along the way.

Recovering Democracy In South Africa (Paperback): Raymond Suttner Recovering Democracy In South Africa (Paperback)
Raymond Suttner
R320 R295 Discovery Miles 2 950 Save R25 (8%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

South Africa’s hard-won democracy, symbolised by the late liberation hero Nelson Mandela, was the main victim of the chaos in parliament during President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address.

In Recovering Democracy in South Africa, Raymond Suttner brings together the best of his recent writings and essays; he offers a fresh look at the wide range of contentious issues that currently preoccupy South Africans, from the threat to constitutionalism to problems with leadership and questions of ethics.

The book is as much an in-depth engagement with our difficult present as it is a damning account of the politics of the Zuma era.

This book comes out at a time when South Africa faces its own challenges. What the future holds for South Africa depends on what each of us puts into reclaiming our democracy and the values that underpin our country.

Robert Hamblin 1
R358 Discovery Miles 3 580 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

Robert Hamblin's much awaited memoir is a tale of a human who refuses to live in a box, confronting and healing from gender confines and racism.

It's about excavating the truth in violent Apartheid South Africa where law and church decide which body can love another, based on colour or gender, brilliantly exploring the confines of the straight trajectory.

Toe Elfrieda ná ʼn lang koma uiteindelik haar oë oopmaak, is haar kop leeg.

In September 2018, Collan Rex, former water polo coach at Parktown Boys High, was found guilty of 144 charges of sexual assault and sentenced to 23 years in prison. He had molested and choked a boarding house full of school boys into silence and shame, leaving behind a trail of broken lives. His response in court? It'd been done to him, in the same way, at the same school.

Now the victims, the parents and the abuser tell their stories.

Lucky Packet (Paperback): Trevor Sacks Lucky Packet (Paperback)
Trevor Sacks
R427 Discovery Miles 4 270 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

Growing up in a Northern Transvaal town during the State of Emergency in the 1980s, Ben Aronbach doesn’t fit in anywhere. Among the predominantly Afrikaans, Christian inhabitants, he is the Jewish kid, but in the Jewish community he is the boy from the family of lapsed shul-goers. Even though he is learning Hebrew for his bar mitzvah, he feels like an outsider learning a foreign language.

Then Ben meets Leo Fein, a man who knew his father before he died. When Leo includes the boy in his schemes, Ben feels exhilarated. Little does he know the far-reaching impact that Leo will have on the Aronbach family’s life.

It is only years later, in the run-up to the 1992 Referendum, that Ben gets a chance to confront the charlatan . . . but he also has to face his own guilt over his family’s downfall.

Set during two important moments in South Africa’s history, Lucky Packet is told with humour and poignancy.

The Madiba Appreciation Club - A Chef's Story (Paperback): Brett Ladds The Madiba Appreciation Club - A Chef's Story (Paperback)
Brett Ladds 3
R661 Discovery Miles 6 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Once, chef Brett Ladds was given a cigar by Fidel Castro, he talked weightlifting with Swazi king Mswati III and his cooking made Quincy Jones sing. For many years he also served Nelson Mandela many cups of rooibos tea and made him his favourite meals.

Ladds was the executive chef of the SA government and manager of the presidential guesthouse at Bryntirion Estate in Pretoria from 1994-1999 where he served both Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. It was a naive and star-struck 21-year-old Ladds who started working at the guesthouse in the months before the first democratic election. During this time he was always in the background when struggle stalwarts like Steve Tshwete, Joe Modise and Dullah Omar met Mandela to discuss the future of the country.

This heart-warming book tells of a young man’s coming of age at a turning point in our history. His stories about meeting kings and queens, presidents, rock stars and even the pope are laced with his unique, self-deprecating sense of humour. Of Queen Elizabeth he says it felt like speaking to his gran. “I asked myself, how does all that power fit into this lovely, caring lady?” Of Robert Mugabe: “He never moaned about a thing.”

Then there are the Russian diplomats and their drinking habits and the Saudi-Arabian sheik who had 8 television sets installed in his room and bought 20 blankets at R5000 each for his stay.

It’s a book to make you laugh and cry. And Madiba’s favourite champagne? Pêche Royale . . .

Now, with his wife Abigail, Lukhanyo brings to life the father he never knew and investigates the mystery that surrounds his death despite two high-profile inquests.

Join them in a poignant and inspiring journey into the history of a remarkable family that traces the struggle against apartheid beginning with Fort's grandfather, Rivonia trialist and ANC Secretary-General Rev James Calata.

Toyboy (Paperback): Leon van Nierop Toyboy (Paperback)
Leon van Nierop 3
R305 Discovery Miles 3 050 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

From the moment 26-year-old Tristan Hansen steps out of the shower and onto the roof garden of his Maboneng loft, Toyboy pulsates with eroticism. The air is hot and humid, and there’s a Joburg thunderstorm brewing on the horizon. The first flashes of lightning illuminates Tristan’s spectacular flat and the riches it contains: gifts of thanks from his many clients, tokens of their appreciation. Because Tristan is an angel of pleasure, an exclusive escort to Johannesburg’s rich and powerful women. And he is one of a kind.

At how the enigmatic Tristan were trained in the art of lovemaking his clients can only guess. He seldom speaks of those who helped him shake off the strictures of his conservative mother who had to raise him on her own when his father committed suicide. Christina, his first love, and their story set far off in a small Italian village, he also keeps to himself.

But how did Tristan end up here? Who were those women who taught him all he knows? And who is the mystery caller who keeps on phoning and whose calls are filled with menacing silence?

Twenty years ago, Leon van Nierop published his Afrikaans bestseller Plesierengel. Toyboy, published in Afrikaans and English, is its prequel.

The long wave (Paperback): Tom Dreyer The long wave (Paperback)
Tom Dreyer
R292 Discovery Miles 2 920 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

In the wake of his father's death, Gilbert du Toit begins to see rays of light and schools of fish streaking through the air. He believes that these visions are sending him a message, and sets off to follow his peculiar guides across the vastness of the Great Karoo. A journey that begins with a sense of purpose deteriorates into a manic and unpredictable expedition. When Gilbert's path crosses that of the Howlers, a trio of e-convicts touring the country with violin, trumpet and guitar, he is steered to dinosaur parks and backroad bars in the South African hinterland. Yet, as his travels unfold, it becomes clear that his past cannot be outpaced easily. A love affair in Kuils River offers respite, but in the end Gilber must confront the question: what is the message in the signs he sees all around him? In glimmering prose infused with humour and pathos, Tom Dreyer's The Long Wave is a tale of transformation, friendship and the mystery at the heart of ordinary life.

God, Spies And Lies - Finding South Africa's Future Through Its Past (Paperback): John Matisonn God, Spies And Lies - Finding South Africa's Future Through Its Past (Paperback)
John Matisonn 1
R415 Discovery Miles 4 150 Ships in 2 - 4 working days

"For a couple of months in the near perfect summer of 1990/1991, Jacob Zuma came to stay in my house in Norwood, Johannesburg… Twenty five years later, my former house guest has all but morally bankrupted Nelson Mandela's ruling African National Congress. President Zuma's vision-free leadership, corrupt personal behaviour and attempts to use his political power to distort the judicial system render him no better than Italy's corrupt bunga-bunga partying ex-prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi."

So begins God, Spies And Lies, the most explosive insider’s account since Mandela came to power, a never-before-seen insider’s account of how South Africa got here -- and how things went wrong. It takes you into the room with Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki, into the Oval Office of the US President and the British Prime Minister’s Chequers country estate, as the fate of southern Africa was being set before and after 1994.

Among its revelations are:

  • How Nelson Mandela studied the Afrikaner Broederbond to end white rule at the same time as he set up the military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe in 1961
  • The story of the apartheid spy who fooled the white liberal elite
  • What made George Bush Senior change his mind about white rule in Southern Africa
  • How Robert Mugabe fooled South African intelligence
  • Why South Africa missed the Information Economy
  • What disillusioned Thabo Mbeki with the British Labour Party
  • How Jacob Zuma came under the spell of the Chinese Communist Party.
  • What it would take to get the country back on track

John Matisonn has had a bird’s eye view of South Africa’s progress through apartheid and democracy. As a political correspondent, foreign correspondent and one of the pioneers of democratic South Africa’s free broadcasting environment, he interacted with every ANC leader since Oliver Tambo and every government leader from John Vorster to Jacob Zuma. Now for the first time this seasoned and erudite insider reveals the secrets of a 40 year career observing the politicians, their spies and the journalists who wrote about them. As a patriot, he argues that the way to a better future can be found through an unvarnished examination of the past.

Black Consciousness - A Love Story (Paperback): Hlumelo Biko Black Consciousness - A Love Story (Paperback)
Hlumelo Biko
R605 Discovery Miles 6 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1968, two young medical students, Steve Biko and Mamphela Ramphele, fell in love while dreaming of a life free from oppression and racial discrimination. Their love story is also the story of the founding of the Black Consciousness Movement (BCM) by a group of 15 principled and ambitious students at the University of Natal in Durban in the early 1970s.

In this deeply personal book, Hlumelo Biko, who was born of Steve and Mamphela’s union, movingly recounts his parents’ love story and how the BCM’s message of black self-love and self-reliance helped to change the course of South African history.

Based on interviews with some of the BCM’s founding members, Black Consciousness describes the early years of the movement in vivid detail and sets out its guiding principles around a positive black identity, black theology and the practice of Ubuntu through community-based programmes.

In spiritual conversation with his father, Hlumelo re-examines what it takes to live a Black Consciousness life in today’s South Africa. He also explains why he believes his father – who was brutally murdered by the apartheid police in 1977 – would have supported true radical economic transformation if he were alive today.
