Veni Sancte Spiritus, K.47 - Study score (Latin, Paperback, Sargeant ed.): Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Veni Sancte Spiritus, K.47 - Study score (Latin, Paperback, Sargeant ed.)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Edited by Richard W. Sargeant
R233 Discovery Miles 2 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Along with the "Benedictus, K. 117," this short work is among the earliest of Mozart's forays into liturgical music for the Salzburg cathedral, which would reach its culmination with masterpieces like the "Coronation Mass, K. 317" and the unfinished Mass, K. 427. This newly engraved and researched edition by Richard W. Sargeant has been carefully formatted for maximum useability by condcutors and students of this interesting and somewhat overlooked repertoire.

Do They Sound Like Bells or Like Howling Wolves? - Interferential Diaphony in Bistritsa- An Investigation into a Multi-Part Singing Tradition in a Middle-Western Bulgarian Village (Hardcover, New edition)
Gerald Florian Messner
R3,105 Discovery Miles 31 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study represents a thorough investigation of a polyphonic vocal village tradition in Bistritsa, Bulgaria. Outsiders describe the narrow intervals of these songs as being "maximally rough", while the singers themselves experience their performance as smooth, beautiful and pleasant. Almost identical polyphonic traditions can be found in places sometimes thousands of kilometers apart. This inquiry is carried out within a very broad and comparative context, whereby historical sources, the origin of different constituents and etymologies as well as electronic sound analysis are taken into account. The results are stunning and ever more relevant - and not just for ethnomusicologists: The babi or grannies of Bistritsa and their songs have been inscribed on UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mankind in 2008.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo, BWV 191 - Vocal score (Latin, Paperback, Bga, Dorffel ed.): Johann Sebastian Bach Gloria in Excelsis Deo, BWV 191 - Vocal score (Latin, Paperback, Bga, Dorffel ed.)
Johann Sebastian Bach; Contributions by Bernhard Todt; Edited by Alfred Dorffel
R239 Discovery Miles 2 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An insteresting case of self-borrowing. Bach took music from this work for his own Mass in B-minor (BWV 191/1 corresponds to the Gloria in excelsis Deo, BWV 191/2 to the Domine Deus, BWV 191/3 to the Cum sancto spiritu). This unusual cantata, the only one with a Latin text, may have been written to celebrate the Peace of Dresden (which ended the 2nd Silesian war) and first performed on Christmas day, 1745. This vocal score is a reissue of the one which was originally published to coincide with Bach Gessellschaft edition. Josquin's Rome - Hearing and Composing in the Sistine Chapel (Hardcover): Jesse Rodin Josquin's Rome - Hearing and Composing in the Sistine Chapel (Hardcover)
Jesse Rodin
R2,960 Discovery Miles 29 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the late fifteenth century the newly built Sistine Chapel was home to a vigorous culture of musical composition and performance. Josquin des Prez stood at its center, singing and composing for the pope's private choir. Josquin's Rome offers a new reading of the composer's work in light of the repertory he and his fellow papal singers performed from the chapel's singers' box. Comprising the single largest surviving corpus of late fifteenth-century sacred music, these pieces served as a backdrop for elaborately choreographed liturgical ceremonies--a sonic analogue to the frescoes by Botticelli, Perugino, and their contemporaries that adorn the chapel's walls. Jesse Rodin uses a comparative approach to uncover this aesthetically and intellectually rich musical tradition. He confronts longstanding problems concerning the authenticity and chronology of Josquin's music while offering nuanced readings of scandalously understudied works by the composer's contemporaries. The book further contextualizes Josquin by locating intersections between his music and the wider soundscape of the Cappella Sistina. Central to Rodin's argument is the idea that these pieces lived in performance. The author puts his interpretations into practice through a series of exquisite recordings by his ensemble, Cut Circle (available both on the companion website and as a CD from Musique en Wallonie). Josquin's Rome is an essential resource for musicologists, scholars of the Italian Renaissance, and enthusiasts of early music.

The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal (Hardcover): Duane Richard Karna The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal (Hardcover)
Duane Richard Karna; Contributions by Susan Bender, Rene Clausen, Dan Dressen, Christine Ericsdotter, …
R3,082 Discovery Miles 30 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The fusion of text with music is one of the most powerful methods by which a composer can express emotion to an audience, yet, all too often, the diction of choral groups is lacking to such a degree as to make the text unintelligible. So argues Duane R. Karna, who in The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal brings together 30 essays by experts from around the world to describe how the character symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) can be used by singers in the choral rehearsal. In an effort to conquer one of the greatest challenges facing choral directors and their choirs, contributors explore the use of the IPA system in a vast range of languages. Readers will find essays devoted to the use of IPA on matters of lyric diction for the following tongues: Baltic Languages, Basque, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Dutch, Ecclesiastical Latin, English, Finnish, French, Georgian, German, Germanic Latin, Greek, Hawaiian, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, and Swedish. Holding firmly to the belief that basic instruction in IPA character is part of a choir's training, Karna and his contributors see enormous potential for choirs to expand considerably their foreign-language repertoire and save considerable rehearsal time. The Use of the International Phonetic Alphabet in the Choral Rehearsal is the ideal primer for choral directors and choirmasters as well as choir members.

Bach'S Dialogue with Modernity - Perspectives on the Passions (Book): John Butt Bach'S Dialogue with Modernity - Perspectives on the Passions (Book)
John Butt
R1,303 Discovery Miles 13 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Providing a detailed analysis of Bach's Passions, this 2010 book represents an important contribution to the debate about the culture of 'classical music', its origins, priorities and survival. The angles from which each chapter proceeds differ from those of a traditional music guide, by examining the Passions in the light of the mindsets of modernity, and their interplay with earlier models of thought and belief. While the historical details of Bach's composition, performance and theological context remain crucial, the foremost concern of this study is to relate these works to a historical context that may, in some threads at least, still be relevant today. The central claim of the book is that the interplay of traditional imperatives and those of early modernity renders Bach's Passions particularly fascinating as artefacts that both reflect and constitute some of the priorities and conditions of the western world.

Credo, RV 591 - Vocal score (Latin, Paperback, Westermann ed.): Antonio Vivaldi Credo, RV 591 - Vocal score (Latin, Paperback, Westermann ed.)
Antonio Vivaldi; Edited by Clayton Westermann
R213 Discovery Miles 2 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For the "Credo in E minor, RV 591," Vivaldi borrows some material he composed for his "Magnificat," which places it later - probably after 1727. This completely choral work has much in common stylistically with the very famous "Gloria" (RV 589) and with his earlier psalm setting "In exitu Israel" (RV 604). Clayton Westermann's 1970 edition, with an English translation beneath the Latin text, is reprinted here in a digitally-enhanced, easy-to-read format.

Die Jahreszeiten, Hob.XXI.3 - Vocal score (German, Paperback, Mandyczewski-Klengel ed.): Joseph Haydn Die Jahreszeiten, Hob.XXI.3 - Vocal score (German, Paperback, Mandyczewski-Klengel ed.)
Joseph Haydn; Retold by Eusebius Swieten; Contributions by Paul Klengel
R731 Discovery Miles 7 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Haydn's second great oratorio, known in English as "The Seasons," was composed 1799-1800 in the wake of the great success and popularity of its predecessor. As with "The Creation," the German libretto provided to Haydn was the work of Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who adapted and translated excepts from the lengthy English poem of James Thompson also entiled "The Seasons." The premiere, given on April 24, 1801 in Vienna, was successful - but not as wildly popular as the previous work. The score reproduced here is an authoritative vocal and piano score in German, English and French issued by Breitkopf und H rtel in the early 20th century, with the original piano reduction carefully edited by Paul Klengel. As with all PLP scores a percentage of each sale is donated to the amazing online archive of free music scores and recordings, IMSLP - Petrucci Music Library.

Die Schoepfung, Hob.XXI.2 - Vocal score (German, Paperback, Mandyczewski-Klengel ed.): Joseph Haydn Die Schoepfung, Hob.XXI.2 - Vocal score (German, Paperback, Mandyczewski-Klengel ed.)
Joseph Haydn; Edited by Eusebius Mandyczewski; Contributions by Paul Klengel
R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Having been inspired by performances of Handel oratorios while visiting London in 1791-92 and 1794-95, Joseph Haydn determined to write one of his own and was given an English libretto entitled "The Creation," which had originally been offered to Handel years before. This libretto, whose author is still not known, was loosely based upon Biblical sources (Genesis, Pslams) and John Milton's epic "Paradise Lost." Haydn presented it to Baron Gottfried van Swieten, who adapted and translated the work into the German libretto used for the composition of the new oratorio. "Die Sch pfung" occupied Haydn from 1796-98 and was given its first performance in Vienna's Schwarzenberg Palace on April 30, 1798 before an invited audience of nobles, government officials, prominent musicians. The public crowded outside in an attempt to hear the work in such number that a police detachment was needed to keep order, and the first public performance (March 19, 1799) was sold out months in advance. The authoritative vocal score reissued here, first published by Breitkopf und H rtel of Leipzig in the early 20th century, features the original German text with English and French beneath, and a playable piano reduction by Paul Klengel. As with all PLP scores a percentage of each sale is donated to the amazing online archive of free music scores and recordings, IMSLP - Petrucci Music Library.
