Manyhave called her a saint. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India'shighest civilian honor, the Jewel of India, in 1980. Pope John Paul II declaredher "Blessed," beatifying her in 2003. For nearly fifty years at the head ofCalcutta's Missionaries of Charity, the Albanian-born Agnes GonxhaBojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, advocatedfor the poor and homeless, ministered to the sick, provided hospice for theafflicted, and embodied the very essence of humanitarianism. Now, revised andupdated, Kathryn Spink's definitive, authorized biography is "simply the best ...around," according to James Martin, SJ, author of The Jesuit Guide to(Almost) Everything. "Thoroughly researched, sensitively written andunfailingly inspiring, Kathryn Spink's book should be, after Mother Teresa'sown writings, your first resource for understanding one of the greatest saintsin Christian history."
The central act of Christian worship is the Mass or Eucharist. This, however, is a formal public act, and generally a once-in-a-week event, which does not entirely answer the spiritual aspirations of the vast majority of Christians who express these through prayer and "devotional practices". The cult of relics and of saints in general; banding together into confraternities to foster a special devotion; going on pilgrimages, wearing medals, badges and scapulars - all these are forms of devotion. Where did they all come from? They have left their mark on the Church, in the history of books and in manuals of prayers, but relatively little is known about them. The idea for this book arose when, in the senior common room of a university theological faculty, it became clear that none of those present knew why there was an "Infant of Prague". The book is in a dictionary format. Mainly historical in its approach, it explains how a particular devotion arose, sets it in its context and explains the purpose it served in the life of the Church. It is critical without being judgemental on subjects such as the "truth" behind apparitions of the Virgin Mary. Some 600 entries range over topics such as relics, pilgrimages and the cult of the saints, as well as more specialized and local devotions. The work is designed to be of use to historians and those engaged in religious studies, as well as being of interest to the general public. The topics are confined to the Christian religion and, in effect, almost entirely to the Roman Catholic tradition. Tables provide a comparison of the Liturgical Calendar (fixed and moveable feasts) before and after the Reform of 1969. A comprehensive index enables readers to follow virtually any subject through its different aspects, as well as providing a quick guide to the contents of the dictionary. Michael Walsh is the editor of Bishop Butler's "Lives of the Saints" in one concise volume, and the author of a companion volume, "Patron Saints".
What should be the Christian's attitude toward society? When so
much of our contemporary culture is at odds with Christian beliefs
and mores, it may seem that serious Christians now have only two
choices: transform society completely according to Christian values
or retreat into the cloister of sectarian fellowship.
Are you a current or emerging Christian leader who yearns to make a
significant long-term difference?
Following on from his first book, 'Internal Revolution', 'A Champion's Resolve' offers grace and inspiration to not only be victorious, but to help others in their own walk with God. It's a very transparent account of a modern man's pursuit and passion to live a pure life, set apart for God. Containing personal testimony backed up by solid Bible teaching it serves to ensure the reader never gives up their own struggle. With the courage of a cage fighter Rob Joy attacks the spiritual forces that have the potential to rob the Christian of their effectiveness and faithfulness.
Following Jesus can seem like an overwhelming task. Yet for all who believe, Jesus asks us to consider the cost and to follow Him. We all walk a unique road in life, yet God equips each of us to pursue Him despite the challenges that face us. Faith can grow stagnant and unsteady if we grow unaware and don’t continually tend to it. With the purpose of applying Scripture to everyday life and striving for unwavering faith, A Faith That Stands features twelve monthly themes, including forgiveness, perseverance, surrender, patience, trust, self-control, and many others. It also provides multigenerational insights from twelve authors in an extended family, making it a great resource as a personal or family daily devotional. This collection offers a broad, yet personal perspective on faith with practical life application questions at the end of each week. Designed for a variety of settings, its versatility makes it a great resource as a personal Bible study or small- group study with some friends.
Gary Miller shares more heralded articles that have appeared in newspapers and magazines throughout the nation in this fourth volume of Outdoor Truths. Each entry is brief and stands alone from the other articles. It is the perfect deer-stand or coffee table book that can be enjoyed at different times. While some people may think of these articles as devotionals for hunters and fishers, the author has never viewed them that way. The reason is because he's never envisioned his audience as only faithful Christians but instead as people who may be unsure about Christianity or the church. The only thing he's always been sure about his readers is that by and large, hunters and fishers are not atheists. They see the handiwork of someone bigger whenever they spend time in the woods or on the water. These articles will help you navigate what you already know. If you love the outdoors, aren't sure about faith, but believe in God-or if you're a dedicated Christian-then you'll treasure these writings.
What is the difference between an intellectual, factual knowledge of God and the actual change that occurs when you enter into an intimate relationship of love with Jesus? Matthew Braden, a devoted servant of the Lord, explores that question in this heartfelt work, emphasizing that true faith means more than believing you are guaranteed a place in heaven. He illustrates that it is not enough to simply know all the right answers or to be born into a “Christian” home. He looks back on how he lost his way after growing up in the church, giving in to “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” (1 John 2:16). All the while, he would have claimed that he loved God. But time slowly uncovered the reality that his “Christian” life was just a veil for the sin that held him captive. The author reveals how the Holy Spirit ignited his faith, challenging his heart with questions such as:
What does it really mean to love God? Matthew uses many thought provoking questions to challenge his readers to examine what they believe and how it affects the way they live. He also notes that choosing to put your faith in Jesus and surrender your will is not an intellectual determination—it is a decision of the heart. Forget what you think you know, challenge what you have heard, and investigate the Word of God for yourself with the insights in Factual or Actual?
What if sex, gender, and sexuality were designed to tell a much greater story than we could ever imagine? What if we had a part to play in that story? With gentle compassion and steadfast truth, Ryan Andrew Smith explores what the Bible says about sex, gender, marriage, and sexuality in a way that will appeal to Christians and non-Christians alike. A great resource for individuals, groups, and churches, Trust the Circle also presents ways that Christians can engage our sexually evolving culture with grace, love, and truth. Regardless of your views regarding sex and sexuality, you will find this resource helpful in understanding what the Bible says about these important and timely topics.
In Hermeneutics of Holiness, Naomi Koltun-Fromm examines the
ancient nexus of holiness and sexuality and explores its roots in
the biblical texts as well as its manifestations throughout ancient
and late-ancient Judaism and early Syriac Christianity. In the
process, she tells the story of how the biblical notions of "holy
person" and "holy community" came to be defined by the sexual and
marriage practices of various interpretive communities in late
antiquity.

Prayer is a vital part of the Christian walk; it's a must for success in the Christian journey. In Audacious Prayers, author Albert B. K. Appiah offers a handbook about prayer and what prayer can do in one's life, focusing on praying bold prayers and believing God to answer them. It is about petitioning God audaciously and expecting answers. Drawing on many examples from the Bible to underscore that God answers even the most daring of prayers, it shares powerful stories of Biblical characters who were delivered from pain and suffering by the hand of God. Appiah weaves personal examples from his own life about some rather bold petitions God granted. He offers a living testimony of the goodness and graciousness of God, who will answer prayer if you dare enough to believe he can.
