Edith Stein (1891-1942), who was recently canonized, was one of the most intriguing Catholics of the twentieth century. A Jewish convert, an eminent philosopher, educator, and advocate for women, she became a Discalced Carmelite nun, Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Arrested by the Nazis she died in Auschwitz in 1942. This volume highlights the extraordinary features of her spirituality -- a vision that integrated her philosophical training, her affinity for Carmelite mysticism, and her personal identification with the way of the Cross. Edith Stein provides a wonderful introduction to an extraordinary mind.
In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges readers to follow their Rabbi more closely by re-examining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We ll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands. Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today? In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we ll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we ll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi s teachings from a Jewish point of view."
Many of us think of activism as signing petitions, attending rallies or marches, or engaging in political agendas. But what does it look like to be moved by the things that moved God's heart in the day-to-day? How can we live in such a way that we are always, out of habit, contributing to a more just society? In this inspiring and accessible book, pastor J.W. Buck shows you how to engage in 7 practices to be a faithful activist in the world today, including choosing * thoughtful resistance over thoughtless compliance * loving your neighbor over fearing your differences * seeking forgiveness over revenge * resting over endless working * practicing nonviolence over violence * and more If you've wanted to get involved in justice work but aren't sure where to start, this practical and visually engaging book will show you how you can develop everyday habits drawn from the life of Jesus that make the world a better place.
A Crisis Is a Privileged Time to Be Alive
As Christians, we have the answers the world is looking for, and times of crisis give us the opportunity to show them just how good God is. After reading this book, you will find rest in the safety of God’s protection and be inspired to share His peace and comfort with others who are gripped by fear during uncertain times.
Emerging from the author's recurring vision of little lights coming on in the darkest places, Lighting the Beacons seeks to expand our horizons by daring us to believe the realities of heaven can break into the present day. It is the Holy Spirit who brings hope by communicating love from the heart of God - the God who is always waiting, always longing to welcome us home. Being warmed by God's love kindles the flame of faith in our hearts. This flame may become a beacon; it may become a tiny candle! The work of God is always fragile, but as we see in the life of Mary, obedience and prayer can have the most profound effects. We may never know how our small pinprick of light has helped someone engulfed in darkness to find their way. Bishop Jill's wise, passionate book is illustrated throughout with stories from contemporary culture, scripture and the writings of the saints. It captivatingly conveys how, as beacons of God's light and love, we can help to bring heaven to earth at this very moment - and transform our society into 'a land of hope and glory'!
Pastor and author James Emery White leads his church and his life with a singular mission: to turn spiritual explorers into fully devoted followers of Christ. The obvious first step in this process is for someone to cross the line of faith--to say, "I believe." That was the heart behind his book Christianity for People Who Aren't Christians. But what comes after "I believe" is equally important, and it's the way someone truly becomes a fully devoted follower of Christ. This manual for discipleship takes new Christians through the basics of growing in the faith and connecting with the church, including - prioritizing Bible study - developing a regular prayer life - spending quiet time with God - plugging into the life of a local church - experiencing God in worship - finding ways to serve others - being faithful with finances - and more A perfect resource for pastors and ministry leaders to offer to the new believers in their midst, After "I Believe" is a solid foundation for anyone seeking to build a vibrant Christian life. "James Emery White has done a masterful job of explaining discipleship for new and seasoned believers alike. Often the great books on discipleship are deep but inaccessible. Others are easy to read but lack depth. Jim takes a wealth of knowledge and insight on the essentials of Christian discipleship and makes them wonderfully easy to understand but deep enough to authentically help you."--Carey Nieuwhof, leadership author, podcaster, and founding pastor of Connexus Church in Barrie, Ontario "Living a life with Christ is not a onetime commitment. White reminds us it is a lifetime of intentional choices and disciplined practices that help us in our desire to be followers of Jesus."--Suzanne Stabile, author of The Path between Us, coauthor of The Road Back to You, and host of The Enneagram Journey podcast "I have long loved the writings of James Emery White for his unique insights into the Christian faith and his knack for unraveling complex issues. Now he offers us an updated, refreshing guide for following Jesus in a confusing and sometimes hostile world. After "I Believe" is a practical resource for spiritual growth. Compellingly straightforward, this book will help you align yourself to biblical truth to effect real life-change. Jim's chapter on prayer alone makes this book worth buying. If you want to inject your Christian life with a good dose of adventure and wonder, then you'll want to read this book."--Skip Heitzig, pastor of Calvary Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and author of The Bible from 30,000 Feet "In After "I Believe," James Emery White combines a brilliant understanding of profound biblical truths with a heart to love and lead people toward a lifesaving relationship with Jesus. It lights the way for anyone seeking to take that next step in living life to the fullest as God intended."--Santiago "Jimmy" Mellado, president and CEO of Compassion International
Is the desire of your heart to be close to God? Do you long for an intimate relationship with your Creator but He seems elusive? Perhaps it is because something essential is missing in your life-the fear of the Lord. Don't let this frighten you. Fearing God is very different than being afraid of God. It's the key to everything. Holy Fear is not a topic you'll hear much about these days, but if you want to build a faith that stands strong through troubled times, you cannot afford to ignore it. In this six-session video Bible study, bestselling author John Bevere explores more than forty promises in Scripture given to those who embrace holy fear-rewards such as holiness, wisdom, legacy, confidence, happiness, and security. He invites you to take a fresh look at what it means to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. And he shows how approaching God in this way allows you to discover the deeper relationship with the Lord that your soul longs for and that He desires to have with you. Abstract theology is overrated, for God can be found in even the most ordinary of things. Jesus used things like a lily, sparrow, and sheep to teach about the kingdom of God. And in the Old Testament, God repeatedly describes himself and his saving work in relation to physical things such as a rock, horn, or eagle. In God of All Things, pastor and author Andrew Wilson invites you to rediscover God in this way, too--through ordinary, everyday things. He explores the idea of a material world and presents a variety of created marvels that reveal the gospel in everyday life and fuel worship and joy in God--marvels like: Dust: the image of God Horns: the salvation of God Donkeys: the peace of God Water: the life of God Viruses: the problem of God Cities: the kingdom of God God of All Things will leave you with a deeper understanding of Scripture, the world you live in, and the God who made it all.
An Unforgettable Story of Life After Death "The cold voice of the anesthesiologist recited the typical 'count backward from 10' cadence. Darkness closed around me before he got to 7. That's when I found out what it's like to die--and to come back from the dead." It was a beautiful winter's day, showing no signs of what was to come. Steve Sjogren, pastor of one of America's fastest growing churches, went into the hospital for routine gall bladder surgery and died--twice. What began as a tragic medical accident led to Steve's encounter with death, an experience of unimaginable peace and some surprises, with comforting words from God, a meeting with an angel, and seeing those who had died before him. If you, or someone you know, are fearful of dying, curious about heaven, or simply desiring to live life to its fullest, this encouraging book could change how you view life and death.

If we're honest, most of us feel bored, distracted, or discouraged in prayer. We look for resources to give us the "right" words or teach us the "right" technique and are disappointed when they don't seem to help. What we fail to realize is that prayer isn't a place for us to be good or right, and it isn't a place for us to perform or prove our worth. It's a place for us to be honest, present, and known--a place for us to offer ourselves and receive God. Spiritual formation experts Kyle Strobel and John Coe want to show you what you've been missing when it comes to prayer. In this down-to-earth book, they show you how to fearlessly draw near to a holy God, pray without ceasing (and without posturing), and delight in the experience of being fully known and fully loved. Each chapter ends with prayer projects or practices to help you see a difference in your prayer life, starting now.
Somewhere along the way, our culture lost its definition of manhood, leaving generations of men and men-to-be confused about their roles, responsibilities, relationships, and the reason God made them men. It's into this "no man's land" that New York Times bestselling author Mark Batterson declares his mantra for manhood: play the man. In this inspiring call to something greater, he helps men understand what it means to be a man of God by unveiling seven virtues of manhood. Mark shares inspiring stories of manhood, including the true story of the hero and martyr Polycarp, who first heard the voice from heaven say, "Play the man." Mark couples those stories with practical ideas about how to disciple the next generation of men. This is more than a book; it's a movement of men who will settle for nothing less than fulfilling their highest calling to be the man and the father God has destined them to be. Play the man. Make the man.
From best-selling author and theologian R. T. Kendall...
Are you in a season of life where every search for direction, encouragement, or fulfillment seems to come up empty? You thought God had you in a place to thrive and grow, but you are ready to call it quits. There has to be something better. You don't need a new garden; you just need to learn how to dig! In Acres of Diamonds, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Jentezen Franklin helps you discover the unfathomable riches Jesus Christ has for you. Rather than chase after a better life, you can celebrate the untold spiritual provision to be found even in the midst of spiritual deprivation. Readers will learn to cherish where God has placed them as they uncover the hidden potential within their families, jobs, ministries, and communities . . . right where they are.
Seek honor and praise from God and not people. This book will help you to stop being motivated by the approval of others and instead start living for the validation that comes from God alone. Respected author and theologian R. T. Kendall shares a profound revelation of the meaning of John 5:44, the scripture that has guided his life for more than sixty years. Early in his ministry the wise counsel of two mentors brought this scripture to light, and he has determined to live by it ever since. Now he passes on the same wise counsel to his readers. In For an Audience of One, Kendall explores what it means to truly live for Christ alone. Many Christians believe in God and claim that Jesus is their Lord and Savior, but sadly their actions betray them. They are more concerned about the approval of people. They avoid truly following God's leading or taking a bold stand for righteousness if they fear they might lose a friend. Because they are more worried about what people think than what God thinks, they miss out on what God is doing. It's time to learn what a life truly surrendered to God--and God alone--looks like. Readers can live the life He has purposed for them! They can stop being motivated by fear of others and addicted to their approval. For an Audience of One shows readers how to start living for the honor and praise that comes from God alone!
Are you settling for half the story? Highlighting connections that have been hidden from non-Jewish eyes, Rabbi Jason Sobel will connect the dots between the Old and New Testament, helping you see the Bible with clarity as God intended. Most people-even people of faith-do not understand how the Bible fits together. Too many Christians accept half an inheritance, content to embrace merely the New Testament, while Jewish people may often experience the same by embracing only the Old Testament. But God has an intricate plan and purpose for both the Old and the New. In Mysteries of the Messiah, Rabbi Jason Sobel reveals the many connections in Scripture hidden in plain sight. Known for his emphatic declaration "but there's more!" he guides us in seeing the passion and purpose of the Messiah. Mysteries of the Messiah: Uncovers connections between the Old and New Testaments Connects the dots for readers with details about Jesus, the Torah, and biblical characters Written with the unique perspective of a rabbi with an evangelical theological degree No matter how many times you have read the Bible, Mysteries of the Messiah will bring fresh perspective and insight. God's Word, written by many people over thousands of years, is not a random selection of people and stories. Rabbi Jason Sobel connects the dots and helps us see with clarity what God intended.
How do we practice real conversation with God? Instead of prayer becoming an agenda of our needs for God to handle, how can we experience his presence as part of our everyday life? How do we hear what he is saying back to us? As we explore the disciplines of prayer and listening through these six sessions, we will draw closer to God in everything that we do.
"I'll be there in spirit." We say this knowing it isn't really possible. Yet we often find ourselves dislocated from the present, inattentive to things in front of us: people, work, culture, ministry opportunities, prayer, and even the Spirit himself. The Holy Spirit, however, relocates us in the present, motivating us to fully engage whatever God puts before us. Instead of relating narrowly to the Spirit based on just a few of his gifts, this book broadens our engagement with him, touring aspects of his vast character that often go unexplored. It turns out, living here in the Spirit is the source of the most meaningful, creative, satisfying life possible.
