This classic of the English countryside, . first published in 1908,
is a favourite with readers of all ages. As the late Margery Fisher
wrote, 'Adults are sadly aware of the figure of Grahame himself,
languishing in a city office and longing for the river: children
respond to the fun, the anarchy of Toad and the entrancing detail
as Grahame's son Alastair must have done when he listened to the
bedside stories that became a book. ' The author invited Arthur
Rackham to illustrate his book, but Rackham said he was too busy -
a decision he was happily able to reconsider in 1936 when he was
approached by the American publisher of the Limited Editions Club.
The project, which he carried out with love and great care for the
authenticity of detail, was his last: the drawings appeared first
in the USA in 1939 and in Britian in 1950.
Meet Zez - Brazil's naughtiest and most loveable boy, his talent for
mischief matched only by his great kindness. When he grows up he wants
to be a 'poet with a bow-tie' but for now he entertains himself playing
pranks on the residents of his family's poor Rio de Janeiro
neighbourhood and inventing friends to play with. That is, until he
meets a real friend, and his life begins to change...
My Sweet Orange Tree is a worldwide classic of children's literature -
never out of print in Brazil since it was first published in 1968, it
has also been translated into an astonishing number of languages and
won the hearts of millions of young readers from Korea to Turkey,
Poland to Thailand and in many other countries too.

When Pollyanna Whittier goes to live with her sourtempered aunt
after her father's death, things seem bad enough, but then a
dreadful accident ensues. However, Pollyanna's sunny nature and
good humour prove to have an astonishing effect on all around her,
and this wonderful tale of how cheerfulness can conquer adversity
has remained one of the world's most popular children's books since
its first publication in 1913. In Pollyanna Grows Up, the only
sequel written by Porter herself, Pollyanna finds that that,
despite being cured of her health problems, adulthood brings fresh
challenges to be overcome.
The Lost World was written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1912 and was
his first work of science fiction. It tells the story of Professor
Challenger, who leads a scientific expedition to the Amazonian
rainforest. The professor and his team stumble upon a lost world
and get trapped there. As they struggle to escape they encounter
great danger from wild animals, ape-men and even dinosaurs! This
title is part of a wonderful new series that offers a quick way
into a range of exciting stories. Fast-moving and accessible, each
story is a shortened, dramatically illustrated version of the
classic novel, which loses none of the strength and flavour of the
original.

at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Mr. Sherlock Holmes, who was usually
very late in the mornings, save upon those not infrequent occasions
when he was up all night, was seated at the breakfast table. I
stood upon the hearth-rug and picked up the stick which our visitor
had left behind him the night before. It was a fine, thick piece of
wood, bulbous-headed, of the sort which is known as a "Penang
lawyer." Just under the head was a broad silver band nearly an inch
across. "To James Mortimer, M.R.C.S., from his friends of the
C.C.H.," was engraved upon it, with the date "1884." It was just
such a stick as the old-fashioned family practitioner used to
carry-dignified, solid, and reassuring. "Well, Watson, what do you
make of it?" Holmes was sitting with his back to me, and I had
given him no sign of my occupation.

at www.1stWorldLibrary.ORG - - Marley was dead: to begin with.
There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial
was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the
chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon
'Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was
as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don't mean to say that I know, of
my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a
door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a
coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But
the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed
hands shall not disturb it, or the Country's done for. You will
therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as
dead as a door-nail.
A brilliantly-conceived and hugely imaginative 'sequel' to Mary
Shelley's masterpiece, Following Frankenstein is a hugely exciting
and beautifully-written historical adventure, perfect for 9-12 year
olds. Sometimes I was jealous of the monster of Frankenstein. I
grew up believing my father cared more for him than he did for me.
And was I wrong? Maggie Walton's father has dedicated his life to a
single pursuit: hunting down the monster created by Victor
Frankenstein. It has cost Maggie and her family everything - and
now her father is staking everything on one last voyage to the
Arctic, with Maggie secretly in tow, where he hopes to find the
monster at last. But there they make a shocking discovery:
Frankenstein's monster has a son... A breath-taking, epic
adventure, spanning the icy wastes of the Arctic Tundra to the
vaudeville circus of New York, from the award-winning author of No
Ballet Shoes in Syria and Another Twist in the Tale.

Emily and Charlotte fix up a Victorian dolls' house - just for
them. It's perfect. But then a new arrival starts to wreak havoc in
the dolls' house. For Marchpane might be a wonderfully beautiful
doll, but she is also terribly cruel. And she always gets her own
way . . . First published in 1947, Rumer Godden's classic The
Dolls' House has been delighting children for years, and this
beautiful edition, illustrated by Jane Ray, will delight future

The Jungle Book introduces Mowgli, the human foundling adopted by a
family of wolves. It tells of the enmity between him and the tiger

between the man-cub and Bagheera, the black panther, and Baloo, the
sleepy brown bear, who instructs Mowgli in the Laws of the Jungle.
The Second Jungle Book contains some of the most thrilling of the
Mowgli stories. It includes Red Dog, in which Mowgli forms an

The first edition of The Wizard of Oz, Lyman Frank Baum's
masterpiece, was published in 1900. Since then, generations of
young readers have followed little Dorothy and her dog Toto on
their intrepid journey through the wonderful world of Oz, into
which the girl is thrown by a tornado. Along the way, Dorothy makes
some odd friends who help her tackle dangers and adversity: the
Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion, characters who, along
with the Wicked Witch of the West, the winged monkeys and the
powerful and mysterious Oz, have become icons of our collective
imagination. The incredible success of this work has inspired new
stories for children set in the world of Oz, musicals and numerous
movie adaptations, of which the 1933 version, starring Judy
Garland, stands out. This book, an adaptation of the original text,
is enhanced by stunning illustrations by Manuela Adreani, an artist
of rare sensitivity capable of recreating the imaginary kingdom of
the great and terrible wizard Oz with her drawings, and of
conveying the magic of a story that has become a timeless classic.
