Sharing the Sovereign: Indigenous Peoples, Recognition, Treaties and the State (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Dominic... Sharing the Sovereign: Indigenous Peoples, Recognition, Treaties and the State (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Dominic O'Sullivan
R3,016 Discovery Miles 30 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains how recognition theory contributes to non-colonial and enduring political relationships between Indigenous nations and the state. It refers to Indigenous Australian arguments for a Voice to Parliament and treaties to show what recognition may mean for practical politics and policy-making. It considers critiques of recognition theory by Canadian First Nations' scholars who make strong arguments for its assimilationist effect, but shows that ultimately, recognition is a theory and practice of transformative potential, requiring fundamentally different ways of thinking about citizenship and sovereignty. This book draws extensively on New Zealand's Treaty of Waitangi and measures to support Maori political participation, to show what treaties and a Voice to Parliament could mean in practical terms. It responds to liberal democratic objections to show how institutionalised means of indigenous participation may, in fact, make democracy work better.

The Antarctic Politics of Brazil - Where the Tropic meets the Pole (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Ignacio Javier Cardone The Antarctic Politics of Brazil - Where the Tropic meets the Pole (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Ignacio Javier Cardone
R3,664 Discovery Miles 36 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the connection between Brazil and Antarctica, two regions that can be seen as distant and contrasting, but are physically, culturally and politically associated. Relying on archival material and previous literature, the book offers a thorough account of Brazil's involvement with one of the most significant regions in the global environment. The author explores the place of Antarctica in geopolitical works and in the first initiatives involving Brazil and the continent, from the rise of geopolitical thought in Brazil in the 1930s up to the present day. He argues that the connection between Brazil and Antarctica is not without its difficulties, but it has been structured in many enduring ways. The book covers causes for the delay and eventual adoption of a now active foreign policy regarding the region, the policy's early performance in Antarctica, its evolution as a consequence of domestic and international changes, the increasing interest in the environment, and further recent developments.

Regenerative Sustainable Development of Universities and Cities - The Role of Living Laboratories (Hardcover): Ariane Koenig Regenerative Sustainable Development of Universities and Cities - The Role of Living Laboratories (Hardcover)
Ariane Koenig
R4,314 Discovery Miles 43 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Now that the Earth has reached the limits of its biophysical carrying capacity, we have to change technologies, social practices and social norms relating to material production and consumption to ensure that we do not further jeopardize the functioning of our planet's life support systems. Through research, education and civic engagement, universities have a pivotal role to play in this transition. This timely book explores how universities are establishing living laboratories for sustainable development, and examines the communication networks and knowledge infrastructures that underpin impact both on and beyond the campus. The expert contributors present case studies of living laboratories being built in leading universities across four continents. Their aim is to cultivate the transition to sustainable development by actively fostering social and technological change to improve use of natural resources and reduce pollution. They are designed to link research, education and practice and to integrate knowledge across disciplines to develop more socially robust approaches to improving sustainability. Directing attention to what enables and constrains learning in communities of multiple and very diverse stakeholders in such laboratories can contribute to a better general understanding of factors influencing the chance of success (or failure), and the institutional arrangements, norms and values that accompany it. Focussing on social learning processes to drive societal change for sustainable development, this fascinating book will prove an invaluable read for academics, researchers, students and policy makers in the fields of higher education, regional and urban studies, public policy and the environment, and development studies. Inclusive Development Through Guaranteed Employment - India's MGNREGA Experiences (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Ashok Pankaj Inclusive Development Through Guaranteed Employment - India's MGNREGA Experiences (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Ashok Pankaj
R3,147 Discovery Miles 31 470 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the inclusive development experiences and impacts of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). It discusses the theoretical assumptions underlying the inclusive development of Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS), and draws conclusions based on robust data and real-world experiences with the MGNREGS - which has attracted global attention as India's most ambitious, rights-based development initiative and most expansive work-based social security measure, the world's largest public works programme, and people-centric approach to development. The book argues that the Scheme holds vast potential, and, in fact, has made significant contribution to the promotion of livelihoods of the poorest of the poor, but that the weak institutions of local-self-governance, entrusted for implementation of the Scheme, are incapable of exploiting them to the full. It ends with a concrete policy suggestion: the inclusive development experiences gathered with the EGS and presented here could offer a source of policy change in many developing Afro-Asian countries whose situations are similar to India's, provided the local conditions in the respective country are taken into consideration when designing the EGS. Its significance as a social security measure has increased in post-COVID loss of jobs and livelihoods of the poor.

Nowhere To Go But Down? - Peasant Farming and the International Development Game (Hardcover): Andrew S. Macdonald Nowhere To Go But Down? - Peasant Farming and the International Development Game (Hardcover)
Andrew S. Macdonald
R2,664 Discovery Miles 26 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally published in 1989, this book is a unique examination of subsistence farming in the developing world, and its potential for development. The author writes from the conviction that the farming system is limited in its potential for development by the energy value of manpower and that unless the plight of developing world communities is understood and the importance of manpower constraint recognized, inputs of development funds will be wasted. Clarifying the strengths and limitations of the subsistence farming system, the book makes clear the complexities and difficulties encountered in achieving agricultural development in the poorest countries – providing an informed insight into the inevitability of future famine.

Acts of Growth - Development and the Politics of Abundance in Peru (Hardcover): Eric Hirsch Acts of Growth - Development and the Politics of Abundance in Peru (Hardcover)
Eric Hirsch
R2,491 Discovery Miles 24 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last decade, Peru has experienced a spectacular mining boom and astronomical economic growth. Yet, for villagers in Peru's southern Andes, few have felt the material benefits. With this book, Eric Hirsch considers what growth means-and importantly how it feels. Hirsch proposes an analysis of boom-time capitalism that starts not from considerations of poverty, but from the premise that Peru is wealthy. He situates his work in a network of villages near new mining sites, agricultural export markets, and tourist attractions, where Peruvian prosperity appears tantalizingly close, yet just out of reach. This book centers on small-scale development investments working to transform villagers into Indigenous entrepreneurs ready to capitalize on Peru's new national brand and access the constantly deferred promise of national growth. That meant identifying as Indigenous, where few actively did so; identifying as an entrepreneur, in a place where single-minded devotion to a business went against the tendency to diversify income sources; and identifying every dimension of one's daily life as a resource, despite the unwelcome intimacy this required. Theorizing growth as an affective project that requires constant physical and emotional labor, Acts of Growth follows a diverse group of Andean residents through the exhausting work of making an economy grow.

Transnational LGBT Activism and UK-Based NGOs - Colonialism and Power (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Matthew Farmer Transnational LGBT Activism and UK-Based NGOs - Colonialism and Power (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Matthew Farmer
R2,887 Discovery Miles 28 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contributes an analysis of UK-based non-governmental organisations engaged in transnational lesbian, gay, bisexual, and trans (LGBT) activism, within a broader recognition of the complexities that British colonial legacies perpetuate in contemporary international relations. From this analysis, the book suggests that greater engagement with intersectional and decolonial approaches to transnational activism would allow for a more transformative solidarity that challenges the broader impacts of coloniality on LGBT people's lives globally. Case studies are used to explore UK actors' participation in the complexities of contemporary transnational LGBT activism, including activist responses to developments in Brunei between 2014 and 2019, and the use of LGBT aid conditionality by Western governments. Activist engagements with legacies of British colonialism are also explored, including a focus on 'sodomy laws' and the Commonwealth, as well as the challenges faced by LGBT people seeking asylum in the UK.

Affect, Gender and Sexuality in Latin America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Cecilia Macon, Mariela Solana, Nayla Luz Vacarezza Affect, Gender and Sexuality in Latin America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Cecilia Macon, Mariela Solana, Nayla Luz Vacarezza
R3,670 Discovery Miles 36 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book emphasizes the significance of affects, feelings and emotions in how we think about politics, gender and sexuality in Latin America. Considering the complex and even contradictory social processes that the region is experiencing today, many Latin American authors are turning to affect to find a key to understand our present situation, to revisit our history, and to imagine new possibilities for the future. This tendency has shown such a specificity and sometimes departure from northern productions that it compels us to focus more deeply on its own arguments, methods, and critical contributions. This volume features essays that explore the particularities of Latin American ways of thinking about affect and how they can shed new light into our understanding of, gender, sexuality and politics.

Development NGOs and Languages - Listening, Power and Inclusion (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Hilary Footitt, Angela M. Crack,... Development NGOs and Languages - Listening, Power and Inclusion (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Hilary Footitt, Angela M. Crack, Wine Tesseur
R1,411 Discovery Miles 14 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book addresses, for the first time, the question of how development NGOs attempt to 'listen' to communities in linguistically diverse environments. NGOs are under increasing pressure to demonstrate that they 'listen' to the people and communities that they are trying to serve, but this can be an immensely challenging task where there are significant language and cultural differences. However, until now, there has been no systematic study of the role of foreign languages in development work. The authors present findings based on interviews with a wide range of NGO staff and government officials, NGO archives, and observations of NGO-community interaction in country case studies. They suggest ways in which NGOs can reform their language policies to listen to the recipients of aid more effectively.

Methodological Approaches to Societies in Transformation - How to Make Sense of Change (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Yasmine... Methodological Approaches to Societies in Transformation - How to Make Sense of Change (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Yasmine Berriane, Annuska Derks, Aymon Kreil, Dorothea Luddeckens
R1,419 Discovery Miles 14 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This open access book provides methodological devices and analytical frameworks for the study of societies in transformation. It explores a central paradox in the study of change: making sense of change requires long-term perspectives on societal transformations and on the different ways people experience social change, whereas the research carried out to study change is necessarily limited to a relatively short space of time. This volume offers a range of methodological responses to this challenge by paying attention to the complex entanglement of qualitative research and the metanarratives generally used to account for change. Each chapter is based on a concrete case study from different parts of the world and tackles a diversity of topics, analytical approaches, and data collection methods. The contributors' innovative solutions provide valuable tools and techniques for all those interested in the study of change.

Education for Sustaining Peace through Historical Memory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Markus Schultze-Kraft Education for Sustaining Peace through Historical Memory (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Markus Schultze-Kraft
R1,495 Discovery Miles 14 950 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Informed by the author's long-standing work on violent conflict, peace and education in countries of the Global South, particularly Colombia, this open access book presents a comprehensive narrative about the relationship between peace education, historical memory and the sustaining peace agenda, advocating for the adoption of a new perspective on education for sustaining peace through historical memory. Education on and for peace in countries wrestling with, or emerging from, protracted violent conflict is up against major challenges, and both conventional and critical approaches to peace education are limited to address these. Incorporating a focus on historical memory, without losing sight of its own pitfalls, into peace education can support learners and teachers to come to grips with achieving positive, peace-sustaining change at both the micro (individual) and macro (social and institutional) levels, and to develop concepts and practices of effective and legitimate alternatives to violence and war. Conceived in these terms, historical memory-oriented peace education also stands to enhance the work-in-progress that is the UN-led sustaining peace agenda, including its Sustainable Development Goals.

Remembering India’s Villages (Hardcover): Santosh K. Singh Remembering India’s Villages (Hardcover)
Santosh K. Singh
R4,220 Discovery Miles 42 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the time of agrarian crisis and movement, Remembering India’s Villages centralises the rural India—examining its stubborn past and dynamic present. Departing from the myth of little republics, it sees villages in cinema, development discourses, and debates among the founders of modern India like Gandhi, Nehru, Tagore and Ambedkar. Empirical research, multidisciplinary perspective, and cross-cultural insights are useful aids in this book toward understanding the reality of the rural that comprises structural anomalies and social possibilities. The book remembers India’s villages under the trope of reconstitution rather than disappearance. The book adds to the renewed interest in village studies, rural sociology, development studies, and intellectual history. This book is co-published with Aakar Books. Jonna P. Estudillo, Yoko Kijima, Tetsushi Sonobe
R1,583 Discovery Miles 15 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This Open Access book explores the multifaceted nature of agricultural and rural development in Asia and examines the extent to which the Asian experience is being replicated in contemporary Africa. This volume compiles the works of top scholars who provided analyses and evidences from household-level surveys collected for many years in several parts of Asia and Africa. The most important finding presented in this book is that African agricultural development has evolved following the pathways of Asian agricultural development. The common pathways are borrowed technology from abroad and adaptive research in rice farming; secured property rights on natural resources; adoption of ICTs; investments in human capital, including training; and launching of the high-value agriculture. In both continents, agricultural development started in the crop sector, which had a strong tendency to induce the dynamic development of other sectors in rural areas.

Natalia Satyro, Eloisa del Pino, Carmen Midaglia
R3,361 Discovery Miles 33 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book explores the scope of reforms and changes in the social protection systems in Latin America that have started at the beginning of the 21st century. It describes how and to what extent changes in social protection systems and social policies have occurred in the region in recent decades. Taking a comparative approach, the volume identifies the triggers for the transformations and how such pressures are received by the welfare regime, or a specific policy sector, to finally yield a given type of reform. The analysis is characterized by the presence of certain factors that explain the development of social protection systems in Latin America, such as economic growth, the consolidation of democratic political regimes, and the region's Left Turns. The book also examines to what extent common challenges and processes induced by international institutions have led to convergence among countries or welfare regimes, or whether each maintains its own identity.

Culture and Policy-Making - Pluralism, Performativity, and Semiotic Capital (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Marco Cremaschi,... Culture and Policy-Making - Pluralism, Performativity, and Semiotic Capital (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Marco Cremaschi, Carlotta Fioretti, Terri Mannarini, Sergio Salvatore
R3,123 Discovery Miles 31 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book advances the understanding and modelling of sensemaking and cultural processes as being crucial to the scientific study of contemporary complex societies. It outlines a dynamic, processual conception of culture and a general view of the role of cultural dynamics in policy-making, drawing three significant methodological implications: pluralism, performativity, and semiotic capital. It focuses on the theoretical and methodological aspects of the analysis of culture and its dynamics that could be applied to the developing of policymaking and, in general, to the understanding of social phenomena. It draws from the experience and data of a large-scale project, RECRIRE, funded by the H2020 program that mapped the symbolic universes across Europe after the economic crisis. It further develops the relationship between culture and policy-making discussed in two previous volumes in this series, and constitutes the ideal third and final element of this trilogy. The book is a useful tool for academics involved in studying cultural dynamics and for policy-oriented researchers and decision-makers attentive to the cultural dimensions of the design, implementation and reception of public policies.

Banking and Microfinance Institution Partnerships - A Comparative Analysis of Cambodia and Australia (Hardcover): Don Chandima... Banking and Microfinance Institution Partnerships - A Comparative Analysis of Cambodia and Australia (Hardcover)
Don Chandima Padmaperuma
R3,639 Discovery Miles 36 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines partnerships between commercial banks and microfinance institutions (MFIs). It demonstrates that when set up properly, these partnerships have the potential to develop and enhance the financial inclusion agenda, and further support sustainable development. MFIs provide access to finance predominantly for those who are poor but economically active, and therefore their expansion is imperative for inclusive economic development. However, MFIs are faced with enormous challenges. The book discusses how partnering with a commercial bank can meet these challenges and the process of interaction contributing to the enhancement of institutional robustness of MFIs. Through two distinct case studies, in Cambodia and Australia, the book discusses the motivations, objectives and operational dynamics of a partnership, as well as the challenges, success factors, and potential benefits, from the increase in outreach and sustainability, to the transference of knowledge and potential for capacity building. Similarly, the partnering banks benefit in line with the intended objectives-commercial or social besides help embedding social consciousness and improving staff engagement. Concluding with elucidating the characteristics of a partnership model that can succeed across different global contexts, the book will interest a range of researchers and students across development economics, banking, finance, and sustainable development.

Peter T. Jacobs
R112 R104 Discovery Miles 1 040 Save R8 (7%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

With more and more global economic wealth and power resting with fewer and fewer people, and given the acute land inequalities in the rural areas of Africa, Latin America, and Asia, how valid are the dominant theories about the nature of rural livelihoods? How can the intricacies of the economic and social transformations that are unfolding in the rural areas of developing countries best be understood? The authors of Equitable Rural Socioeconomic Change address these questions as they explore the interrelated themes of land inequality, climate dynamics, and technological innovation across varied rural landscapes, primarily in South Africa, but also in Rwanda, and Brazil.

Civil Society Organisations, Governance and the Caribbean Community (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Kristina Hinds Civil Society Organisations, Governance and the Caribbean Community (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Kristina Hinds
R2,375 Discovery Miles 23 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a unique analysis of the participatory spaces available for civil society organisations (CSOs) in Caribbean governance. It reveals the myriad ways in which the region's CSOs have contributed to enriching Caribbean societies and to scaffolding Caribbean regionalism, and also uncovers that despite their contributions, Caribbean CSOs (and civil society more broadly) have found limited space for involvement in governance. The author peers into Caribbean state-civil society participatory dynamics using in-depth country case studies (Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago), mini-case studies and evaluations of the approaches to inclusion within the regional institutions of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). This novel contribution to the Caribbean civil society literature uses these assessments to make a case for regularising state-civil society collaborative practices to enhance the quality of democracy in the region.

Urban Village Renovation - The Stories of Yangcheng Village (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Peilin Li Urban Village Renovation - The Stories of Yangcheng Village (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Peilin Li; Translated by Jianping Zhang, Mingxing Ke
R2,694 Discovery Miles 26 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book addresses the mystery and diversity of urbanization in China, especially with regard to urban villages. The "village in the city" is a unique social phenomenon in the process of Chinese urbanization. A local village society composed of deep-rooted social networks linked by blood, geography, folk beliefs, and folk customs is the outcome of a complex social process, which is accompanied by changes in property rights, restructuring of social networks, and conflicting benefits and values. The end of the village is the epitome of social transformation, and for China as a whole, this change may take a very long time to complete. This book includes various examples of and stories on urban villages, offering readers a wealth of insights into the phenomenon and its significance.

Kazakhstan and the Soviet Legacy - Between Continuity and Rupture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Jean-Francois Caron Kazakhstan and the Soviet Legacy - Between Continuity and Rupture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Jean-Francois Caron
R3,332 Discovery Miles 33 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines Kazakhstan's struggle to distance itself from its Soviet past over 25 years after its independence. To a very large extent, the affirmation of its sovereignty and a unique Kazakhstani way remain largely a matter of rhetoric. This book looks to explain the various aspects that show the continuity of Kazakhstan's political system and governance with its colonial legacy, namely through its foreign policy, the country's environmental policies, the judicial system, the management of religious diversity, the way youth organizations are structured and administered or how those who were born after the collapse of Soviet Union are still showing a typical Soviet behavioral attitude towards the political sphere. What are the reasons for this reluctance or incapacity to break away from these ties of the past? Will the unavoidable political transition that will bring new individuals to the head of the state contribute to a real change? Will this lead to a break with the country's past and a radical shift in the country's policies or will things remain as they have been since 1991? This book provides some valuable insights on what may happen in the near future to the biggest country of Central Asia.
