The Rise and Fall of Korea's Economic Development - Lessons for Developing and Developed Economies (Hardcover, 1st ed.... The Rise and Fall of Korea's Economic Development - Lessons for Developing and Developed Economies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Sung-Hee Jwa
R2,278 Discovery Miles 22 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides a unique and refreshing look at the Korean economy over the past 60 years. While most books and articles on the Korean economy would be technical or specifically address some aspect of Korea, this book takes an overarching view of Korea's economic development. It assesses Korea's economic take-off in the 1960s and 1970s, but also views the problems of 'economic egalitarianism' since the late-1980s to today. The book begins by listing and dispelling a number of important myths of the Korean economy and concludes by providing eight important 'lessons' derived from Korea's experiences for developed as well as developing countries.

Democracy and an Open-Economy World Order (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): George C. Bitros, Nicholas C. Kyriazis Democracy and an Open-Economy World Order (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
George C. Bitros, Nicholas C. Kyriazis
R4,380 Discovery Miles 43 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The essays in this volume explore several key issues facing democracies today. They discuss the dilemma of how to protect civil liberties and individual freedoms in the light of external threats and assess the policies adopted by governments in this area. The book also addresses the question of how free, exactly, free markets should be in an economy in order to secure social peace, before going on to highlight the rudiments of the model of social market economy, as applied in Germany. It examines the problem of the democratic and legitimacy deficits that beset European integration and suggests reforms for a more democratic European Union. Last but not least, by looking back in history, they provide evidence and propose policies for the revitalization of institutions in present-day democracies. The book is of considerable interest to researchers and students in economics and political science, as well as to readers who wish to gain insights into the thorny social issues involved.

Donald Stabile
R4,205 R3,228 Discovery Miles 32 280 Save R977 (23%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book tells the story behind President Franklin D. Roosevelt's use of the phrase "living wage" in a variety of speeches, letters, and statements, and examines the degree to which programs of the New Deal reflected the ideas of a living wage movement that existed in the US for almost three decades before Roosevelt was elected president. Far from being a side issue, the previously unexplored living wage debate sheds light on the New Deal philosophy of social justice by identifying the value judgments behind its policies. Moving chronologically through history, this book's highlights include the revelation of a living wage agenda under the War Industry Board (WIB)'s National War Labor Board (NWLB) during World War I, the unearthing of long-forgotten literature from the 1920s and 30s that formed the foundation of Roosevelt's statements on a living wage, and the examination of contemporary studies that used a simple living wage formula combining collective bargaining, social insurance, and minimum wage as a standard for social justice used to measure the impact of New Deal polices.

The Middle East Economies in Times of Transition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Ahmed Galal, Ishac Diwan The Middle East Economies in Times of Transition (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Ahmed Galal, Ishac Diwan
R3,778 Discovery Miles 37 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Diwan and Galal looks at the structure and prospects of the Middle East economies after the 2011 Uprisings, focusing on issues of economic growth, inequality, the impact of oil, and the unfolding political transitions. On the growth question, the book looks into the extent of structural transformation of the economy, the political economy reasons for the lack of structural change, and the external conditions in the EU and in the GCC that underpin the lack of structural change. On inequality, the book offers new measures of equality of opportunity in human development and in the job market, and it also reviews the complex political economy of subsidy removal. Regarding natural resources, the volume provides three innovations: connecting the notion of 'oil curse' to the global phenomena of asset bubbles; evidence that resource curse effects do not rise monotonically with the size of the resource rent, but rather, according to an inverted U shape; and an extension of the concept of rent to the other non-oil rents that are also predominant in the region. Finally, the volume places the political transition in the region in a global perspective using various methods - theoretical, comparative, and empirical, and it explores the relationship between democracy in its variety of forms and economic development.

Alain Marciano, Giovanni Battista Ramello
R4,314 Discovery Miles 43 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume traces the evolution of the field of law and economics from its European roots to its neoclassical "Chicagoan" period to its current identity as a more fluid, transatlantic discipline. Paying special attention to the work of German economist Juergen Backhaus, who was instrumental in the reintroduction of the European perspective to the field, this book analyzes this gradual shift in the law and economics debate and provides a state-of-the-art of the literature currently being produced by the field's most active scholars. Beginning with a discussion of the history of the field and Backhaus' role in its development, the volume provides a survey of issues central to the current debate such as legal processes in both Europe and the U.S., constitutional political economy, regulatory law, and the ongoing evolution of the European Union. The importance of this volume is two-fold, as it firmly grounds the discipline in history while establishing a future research agenda. This book will be of use to researchers studying law and economics as well as those interested in institutional analysis.

Democracy and the Economy in Finland and Sweden since 1960 - A Nordic Perspective on Neoliberalism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021):... Democracy and the Economy in Finland and Sweden since 1960 - A Nordic Perspective on Neoliberalism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Ilkka Karryla
R3,831 Discovery Miles 38 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the relationship between democracy and the economy in contemporary political thought and policy-making. Using the concepts of economic, industrial and enterprise democracy, the author focuses on the history of Finland and Sweden during the latter part of the twentieth century. The three concepts are discussed in relation to various political groups, such as social democrats, conservatives and liberals, and the reforms that they were associated with, painting a picture of changing economic thought in the Nordic countries, and the West more generally. Arguing that the concept of democracy has evolved from representative parliamentary democracy towards 'participation' in civil society, this book demonstrates how the ideal of individual freedom and choice has surpassed collective decision-making. These shared characteristics between Finland, Sweden and other Western countries challenge the view that the Nordic countries have been exceptional in resisting neoliberalism. In fact, as this book shows, neoliberalism has been influential to the Nordics since the 1970s. Offering an innovative and conceptual perspective on European political history, this book will appeal to scholars interested in Nordic political history and modern European history more generally.

Sino-American Economic Relations, 1944-1949 (Hardcover, New): C. X. George Wei Sino-American Economic Relations, 1944-1949 (Hardcover, New)
C. X. George Wei
R2,920 Discovery Miles 29 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The economic relationship between the U.S. and China during the 1940s has long been neglected, with few scholarly works focusing on the period. This era was overshadowed by the political and diplomatic changes during and after the failure of the Nationalists in 1949. Without a close and insightful look into the reconstruction of China with American involvement during the late 1940s, one cannot identify the problems which led to the Nationalists' failure, nor can one answer the questions dealing with the impact of American economic policy toward China during that time.

Never Married - Singlewomen in Early Modern England (Hardcover, New): Amy M. Froide Never Married - Singlewomen in Early Modern England (Hardcover, New)
Amy M. Froide
R3,604 Discovery Miles 36 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Never Married: Singlewomen in Early Modern England investigates a paradox in the history of early modern England: although one third of adult women were never married, these women have remained largely absent from historical scholarship. Amy Froide reintroduces us to the category of difference called marital status and to the significant ways it shaped the life experiences of early modern women. By de-centring marriage as the norm in social, economic, and cultural terms, her book critically refines our current understanding of people's lives in the past and adds to a recent line of scholarship that questions just how common 'traditional' families really were. This book is both a social-economic study of singlewomen and a cultural study of the meanings of singleness in early modern England. It focuses on never-married women in England's provincial towns, and on singlewomen from a broad social spectrum. Covering the entire early modern era, it reveals that this was a time of transition in the history of never-married women. During the sixteenth century life-long singlewomen were largely absent from popular culture, but by the eighteenth century they had become a central concern of English society. As the first book of original research to focus on singlewomen on the period, it also illuminates other areas of early modern history. Froide reveals the importance of kinship in the past to women without husbands and children, as well as to widows, widowers, single men, and orphans. Examining the contributions of working and propertied singlewomen, she is able to illustrate the importance of gender and marital status to urban economies and to notions of urban citizenship in the early modern era. Tracing the origins of the spinster and old maid stereotypes she reveals how singlewomen were marginalized as first the victims and then the villains of Protestant English society.

Endgame for the Euro - A Critical History (Hardcover): B Lucarelli Endgame for the Euro - A Critical History (Hardcover)
B Lucarelli
R1,921 Discovery Miles 19 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This text develops an original critical analysis of the origins and evolution of the euro and the current debt crisis that envelops the euro-zone. It provides a comprehensive critical historical narrative of the evolution of European Monetary Union (EMU). The history of the euro, culminating in the Maastricht blueprint in 1992, reveals that this deeply flawed monetary edifice was informed by the prevailing neoliberal/monetarist economic doctrines, favoured by Germany. The final blueprint witnessed the birth of an international currency which was devoid of a coherent sovereign power.
The author's critique is informed by post-Keynesian theories of endogenous money. Lucarelli provides an essential contribution to the critique of the existing economic theories that continue to inform the evolution of the euro. In the absence of political union and a corresponding fiscal framework, the survival of the euro remains problematic. The imposition of harsh, neoliberal, austerity measures by the IMF/EU/ECB (Troika) on Europe's peripheral, deficit countries threaten the very existence of the euro-zone in its present form, and have set in motion powerful centrifugal forces, which could ultimately derail the entire post-war European project.

Industrial Constructions - The Sources of German Industrial Power (Hardcover, New): Gary Herrigel Industrial Constructions - The Sources of German Industrial Power (Hardcover, New)
Gary Herrigel
R3,667 Discovery Miles 36 670 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is about the way in which industrial production in Germany is conditioned by social and political factors. Herrigel emphasizes regional, organizational, and policy dimensions of the development of German industry from the seventeenth century to the present. The argument is distinctive because it pays so much attention to small and medium-sized firms, and because it suggests that Germany does not have a single coherent national system of industrial governance. This social constructivist point of view presents a direct challenge to the Gerschenkronian, Schumpetarian, and Chandlerian approaches to Germany's economic history.

P. Carl Mullan
R4,306 Discovery Miles 43 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents detailed case studies of the first commercial internet digital currency systems developed between 1996 and 2004. Transactions completed with the new technology circumvented all US financial regulations, an opening that transnational criminals exploited. Mullan explains how an entire industry of companies, agents, and participants turned a blind eye to crimes being committed in this unsupervised environment. He then tracks the subsequent changes made to US regulations that now prevent such unlicensed activity, illustrating the importance of supervising products and industries that arise from new disruptive technology. This book distills hundreds of hours of interviews with the creators and operators of early digital currency businesses to create detailed case studies of their practices.

Economic Ironies Throughout History - Applied Philosophical Insights for Modern Life (Hardcover): Michael Szenberg, L. Ramrattan Economic Ironies Throughout History - Applied Philosophical Insights for Modern Life (Hardcover)
Michael Szenberg, L. Ramrattan
R2,936 R1,952 Discovery Miles 19 520 Save R984 (34%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Economics for Alfred Marshall, the last of the classical economists, is concerned with activities in the ordinary business of life. In that milieu, we find conflicts and chaotic behavior among people, firms, and countries, which make them conduct their affairs in different, and sometimes, ironic ways. Economic Ironies Throughout History explores, explains, predicts, and harnesses these ironies for economists and scholars alike. Szenberg and Ramrattan distill their core economic ironies from a vast history of philosophy and literature that applies to economic thought. They include philosophical, psychological, literary and linguistic discussions and the personalities behind those ideas such as Socrates, Kierkegaard, Hume, Freud, Jung, Saussure, and Barthes. This book is ideal for economists as well as scholars across the business, social science, and humanities fields.

American Management and British Labor - A Comparative Study of the Cotton Spinning Industry (Hardcover, New): Isaac Cohen American Management and British Labor - A Comparative Study of the Cotton Spinning Industry (Hardcover, New)
Isaac Cohen
R2,927 Discovery Miles 29 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the early American cotton industry through British perspectives. The book covers the period from the 1780s to 1880, and concerns mainly Lancashire and New England, although there are many references to Scotland on the one hand, and to Pennsylvania and New York on the other. By concentrating on the spinning branch of the industry, which was far more affected by technological advances than the weaving branch during this period, Cohen is able to contrast different types of technologies, workers, markets, and goods. For example, the book contrasts how American industrialists acted differently than the British millowners and deals with the response of American factory workers to industrialization as distinct from the British operatives. Three interrelated themes emerge to define the theoretical subject matter of this study: mass production versus craft production, technology and organization, and craft control. Significantly, this study recognizes the often overlooked importance of mule spinning to the industry. The volume examines the craft workers' rise to and struggle for power, the rise of the foreman, the role of unions, and an exploration of strikes--how they happened, why they happened, and what happened because of them. In the final chapter, the book expands its focus to examine the relationship of cotton to the coal, iron, and steel industries.

Making Medicine a Business - X-ray Technology, Global Competition, and the Transformation of the Japanese Medical System,... Making Medicine a Business - X-ray Technology, Global Competition, and the Transformation of the Japanese Medical System, 1895-1945 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Pierre-Yves Donze
R3,538 Discovery Miles 35 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book goes back to the origins of the transformation of health and medicine into a business, during the first part of the twentieth century, focusing on the example of Japan. In the past hundred years, medicine has gone from being a charitable activity to a large economic sector, amounting to 12-15% of the GDP in many developed countries, and one of the fastest-growing businesses around the world. Despite the mounting presence of the medical industry, there is a lack of academic work detailing this major transformation. The objective of this book is to fill this gap and address the following question: how did medicine become a business? Using over ten years of research in the field, Pierre-Yves Donze argues that economic factors and business factors were decisive in transforming the way that medicine enters our lives. This book will be of interest to historians of medicine, business historians, health economists, scholars in medical humanities, and more.

Christian Karner, Bernhard Weicht
R3,706 Discovery Miles 37 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Bringing together contributions from an international group of social scientists, this collection examines diverse crises, both historical and contemporary, which implicate market forces, widening inequalities, social exclusion, forms of resistance, and ideological polarisation. The Commonalities of Global Crises offers carefully researched case studies which stretch across large geographical distances- from Egypt to the US and from northern, central, eastern and southern Europe to South America- and covers timely issues including human rights, slavery, care, migration, racism, and the far right. The volume demonstrates that such different settings and diverse concerns are characterized by a common tension in which the crises that unfold around pressures of widening marketization and commodification are met by the (re)building or re-assertion of various communities, and competing politics of solidarity and nostalgia.

Guns, Germs and Steel - A Short History of Everbody for the Last 13,000 Years (Paperback, Reissue): Jared Diamond Guns, Germs and Steel - A Short History of Everbody for the Last 13,000 Years (Paperback, Reissue)
Jared Diamond 1
R345 R311 Discovery Miles 3 110 Save R34 (10%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

GUNS, GERMS AND STEEL is nothing less than an enquiry into the reasonswhy Europe and the Near East became the cradle of modern societies- eventually giving rise to capitalism and science, the dominant forces in our contemporary world-and why, until modern times. Africa, Australasia and the Americas lagged behind in technological sophistication and in political and military power. The native peoplesof those continents are still suffering the consequences. Diamond shows definitively that the origins of this inequality in human fortunes cannot be laid at the door of race or inherent features of the people themselves. He argues that the inequality stems instaed from the differing natural resources available to the people of each continent.

World Insurance - The Evolution of a Global Risk Network (Hardcover): Peter Borscheid, Niels Viggo Haueter World Insurance - The Evolution of a Global Risk Network (Hardcover)
Peter Borscheid, Niels Viggo Haueter
R6,890 Discovery Miles 68 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Since the end of the eighteenth century, the insurance industry has cast a safety net around the world, first in the British Isles and then further afield, irrespective of cultural, political and ideological divides. Unlike previous publications on insurance history, which tend to discuss the development of national markets or individual companies, this book focuses on the creation of networks across borders from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day.
Distinguished international economic historians draw upon examples from twenty countries across the continents to demonstrate how what was called the 'British system' of risk management spread out in waves, and describes the forces that made this possible--first among them migration from Europe and international trade. The book explores the economic, political, religious, and cultural obstacles that blocked the path of this European invention--not only religious law and traditional practices, but above all protectionism, inflation, and political ideologies. It examines the process of transformation through which modern insurance supplanted traditional forms of protection against perils and risks and was able to keep on offering new ways of dealing with the risks of modern life. As well as discussing primary insurance, it also considers the role played by reinsurance, without which the losses arising out of today's natural and man-made disasters would be immeasurably greater. Finally, taking modern-day disaster scenarios as examples, the book shows just what the limits of insurability are and what risks worldwide networks entail.
