Metrology of Automated Tests - Static and Dynamic Characteristics (Paperback): Viacheslav Karmalita Metrology of Automated Tests - Static and Dynamic Characteristics (Paperback)
Viacheslav Karmalita
R2,071 R1,643 Discovery Miles 16 430 Save R428 (21%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers an in-depth discussion related to metrological aspects of automated tests. The accuracy of experimental estimates of test object performance is examined from the standpoint of their statistical variance and systematic biases. The proposed metrological model of automated tests allows to determine the metrological characteristics of measurement means using data from their static and dynamic calibrations. Knowledge of these characteristics provides an ability to examine their impact on the accuracy of test results for the purposes of estimating statistical uncertainties caused by instrumentation errors and eliminating biases that occur as a consequence of inertial properties of measurement means. Optimization of requirements for measurement errors to ensure a given accuracy of test results is discussed as well. Proposed approaches and described methods are illustrated by test examples of turbomachinery products.

Optical Methods of Engineering Analysis (Paperback, Revised): Gary Cloud Optical Methods of Engineering Analysis (Paperback, Revised)
Gary Cloud
R1,658 Discovery Miles 16 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fundamental measurement problems in engineering, mechanics, manufacturing, and physics are now being solved by powerful optical methods. This book presents a lucid, up-to-date discussion of these optical methods. Beginning from a firm base in modern optics, the book proceeds through relevant theory of interference and diffraction and integrates this theory with descriptions of laboratory techniques and apparatus. Among the techniques discussed are classical interferometry, photoelasticity, geometric moire, spatial filtering, moire interferometry, holography, holographic interferometry, laser speckle interferometry, and video-based speckle methods. By providing a firm base in the physical principles and at the same time allowing the reader to perform meaningful experiments related to the topic being studied, the book offers a unique user-oriented approach that will appeal to students, researchers and practising engineers.

Delay Effects on Stability - A Robust Control Approach (Paperback, 2001 ed.): Silviu-Iulian Niculescu Delay Effects on Stability - A Robust Control Approach (Paperback, 2001 ed.)
Silviu-Iulian Niculescu
R4,157 Discovery Miles 41 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph is devoted to the effect of delays on the stability properties of dynamical systems. Stability regions with respect to the delay parameters are considered, and some sufficient characterizations are proposed. This monograph addresses general delay problems and offers solutions in some cases. In other cases, approximations of the stability regions can be proposed. The interpretation of delays as uncertainty allows the authors to use the advances in robust control and robust convex optimization to solve or to approximate the solutions of the corresponding problems.

Evaluating the Measurement Uncertainty - Fundamentals and Practical Guidance (Hardcover): I. Lira Evaluating the Measurement Uncertainty - Fundamentals and Practical Guidance (Hardcover)
I. Lira
R6,337 Discovery Miles 63 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

It is now widely recognized that measurement data should be properly analyzed to include an assessment of their associated uncertainty. Since this parameter allows for a meaningful comparison of the measurement results and for an evaluation of their reliability, its expression is important not only in the specialized field of scientific metrology, but also in industry, trade, and commerce. General rules for evaluating and expressing the uncertainty are given in the internationally accepted ISO Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement, generally known as the GUM.
Evaluating the Measurement Uncertainty details the theoretical framework on which the GUM is based and provides additional material on more advanced topics such as least-squares adjustment and Bayesian statistics. The book does not require previous knowledge other than elementary calculus and can be read as a complement to the GUM or as a stand-alone reference source. It stresses fundamental principles and illustrates their applications through numerous examples taken from many different fields of metrology. The book includes practical guidance as well as theoretical aspects, resulting in an invaluable resource for metrologists, engineers, physicists, and graduate students involved with measurements in academia and industry.

Optical Rheometry of Complex Fluids (Hardcover): Gerald G. Fuller Optical Rheometry of Complex Fluids (Hardcover)
Gerald G. Fuller
R3,838 Discovery Miles 38 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a self-contained presentation of optical methods used to measure the structure and dynamics of complex fluids subject to the influence of external fields. Such fields--hydrodynamic, electric, and magnetic--are commonly encountered in both academic and industrial research, and can produce profound changes in the microscale properties of liquids comprised of polymers, colloids, liquid crystals, or surfactants. Starting with the basic Maxwell field equations, this book discusses the polarization properties of light, including Jones and Mueller calculus, and then covers the transmission, reflection, and scattering of light in anisotropic materials. Spectroscopic interactions with oriented systems such as absorptive dichroism, small wide angle light scattering, and Raman scattering are discussed. Applications of these methods to a wide range of problems in complex fluid dynamics and structure are presented, along with selected case studies chosen to elucidate the range of techniques and materials that can be studied. As the only book of its kind to present a self-contained description of optical methods used for the full range of complex fluids, this work will be special interest to a wide range of readers, including chemical engineers, physical chemists, physicists, polymer and colloid scientists, along with graduate and post-graduate researchers.

Stability Analysis for Linear Repetitive Processes (Paperback): Eric Rogers, David H. Owens Stability Analysis for Linear Repetitive Processes (Paperback)
Eric Rogers, David H. Owens
R1,402 Discovery Miles 14 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Industrial processes such as long-wall coal cutting and me- tal rolling, together with certain areas of 2D signal and image processing, exhibit a repetitive, or multipass struc- ture characterized by a series of sweeps of passes through a known set of dynamics. The output, or pass profile, produced on each pass explicitly contributes to that produced on the text. This interpass interaction can lead to the growth of oscillations, and hence a form of instability, in the se- quence of pass profiles which require control strategies that explicitly incorporate the essential repetitive struc- ture of the process in their decision making. This monograph is unique in developing the new techniques necessary for sy- stematic control systems design in the form of a stability theory and computationally feasible stability tests based on finite simulations and polynomial analysis. Its development requires a basic knowledge of linear frequency domain and state-space theory and a knowledge of basic functional ana- lysis would be beneficial. The text is aimed at researchers in the area of control and systems theory and should also be of interest to those working in the related area of signal and image processing.

The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage - An Introduction (Hardcover, New): William M. Murray, William R. Miller The Bonded Electrical Resistance Strain Gage - An Introduction (Hardcover, New)
William M. Murray, William R. Miller
R3,672 Discovery Miles 36 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Experimental stress analysis is an important tool in the overall design and development of machinery and structures. While analytical techniques and computer solutions are available during the design stage, the results are still dependent on many assumptions that must be made in order to adapt them to the problems at hand. One popular method of finding structural and design weaknesses is through the use of the electrical resistance strain gage. These devices are relatively low in cost, easily applied by a reasonably skilled technician, and require little investment in instrumentation (for the general user), yet they yield a wealth of information in a relatively short time period. The information and its validity is, of course, dependent on the training and knowledge of the engineer who plans the tests and reduces the data. In addition to serving as a reference for engineers, this practical, instructive book has a high potential as a textbook for senior and first-year graduate students in engineering and related fields, such as engineering physics and geology. A solutions manual is available to instructors using the book as a text. To request a free copy of the manual, please write: Peter Gordon, Engineering Editor, Oxford University Press, 198 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10016.

Application of System Identification in Engineering (Paperback, 1988 ed.): H.G. Natke Application of System Identification in Engineering (Paperback, 1988 ed.)
H.G. Natke
R2,752 Discovery Miles 27 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

System identification is a powerful tool in engineering. Its various methods in the frequency and in the time domain have been extensively discussed in earlier "CISM" courses. The aim of this course is to describe the state of the art in specific application areas, such as estimation of eigenquantities (in the aerospace industry, in civil engineering, in naval engineering etc.), noise source detection, fault detection by investigation of dynamic properties, such as machine sound characteristics, and the identification of the dynamic behaviour of flow induced systems (e.g. aerolastic problems). Geotechnical applications are also among the fields of interest. The lecture notes contain demonstrations of several methods and include a valuation by combining various kinds of experience. Such complex information includes not only theoretical aspects of identification but also advice on practical handling, for example concerning testing effort and data handling.

Instrumentation: A Reader - A reader (Paperback, New edition): R. Loxton, P. Pope Instrumentation: A Reader - A reader (Paperback, New edition)
R. Loxton, P. Pope
R1,517 Discovery Miles 15 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book contains a selection of papers and articles in instrumentation previously pub lished in technical periodicals and journals of learned societies. Our selection has been made to illustrate aspects of current practice and applications of instrumentation. The book does not attempt to be encyclopaedic in its coverage of the subject, but to provide some examples of general transduction techniques, of the sensing of particular measurands, of components of instrumentation systems and of instrumentation practice in two very different environments, the food industry and the nuclear power industry. We have made the selection particularly to provide papers appropriate to the study of the Open University course T292 Instrumentation. The papers have been chosen so that the book covers a wide spectrum of instrumentation techniques. Because of this, the book should be of value not only to students of instrumen tation, but also to practising engineers and scientists wishing to glean ideas from areas of instrumentation outside their own fields of expertise. In recent years instrumentation has emerged as a discipline in its own right rather than as an adjunct to traditional science and engineering disciplines. This development has been driven partly by the needs of industries for new and improved sensing techniques, and partly by new technological developments such as microprocessors, optical fibres and in tegrated silicon sensors which are revolutionising sensing and signal processing practice."

For thousands of years, people of all cultures have made and used clocks, from the city sundials of ancient Rome to the medieval water clocks of imperial China, hourglasses fomenting revolution in the Middle Ages, the Stock Exchange clock of Amsterdam in 1611, Enlightenment observatories in India, and the high-precision clocks circling the Earth on a fleet of GPS satellites that have been launched since 1978. Clocks have helped us navigate the world and build empires, and have even taken us to the brink of destruction. Elites have used them to wield power, make money, govern citizens, and control lives-and sometimes the people have used them to fight back. Through the stories of twelve clocks, About Time brings pivotal moments from the past vividly to life. Historian and lifelong clock enthusiast David Rooney takes us from the unveiling of al-Jazari's castle clock in 1206, in present-day Turkey; to the Cape of Good Hope observatory at the southern tip of Africa, where nineteenth-century British government astronomers moved the gears of empire with a time ball and a gun; to the burial of a plutonium clock now sealed beneath a public park in Osaka, where it will keep time for 5,000 years. Rooney shows, through these artifacts, how time has been imagined, politicized, and weaponized over the centuries-and how it might bring peace. Ultimately, he writes, the technical history of horology is only the start of the story. A history of clocks is a history of civilization.

Can a newborn infant accurately record traumatic experience? Can early truamas be retained in memory? How would such traumatic memories affect later development? Where should we look for evidence of such traumas in adult patients? If Someone Speaks, It Gets Lighter provides surprising answers to these questions. Taking as her point of departure both her own clinical experience and case reports in the analytic literature, Lynda Share provides a thorough, at times revelatory, examination of the basic issues. She proposes that the controversy between narrative and historical truth be redefined in terms of the distinctly different memory systems involved and in terms of the special mechanisms whereby trauma, as opposed to ordinary expectable experience, becomes a major unconscious organizer of behavior and memory. Then, winding her way skillfully through contemporary debates about the limits of reconstruction, she argues persuasively that the impact of early infantile trauma can become accessible through disciplined analytic inquiry. Indeed, for Share, to forego the possibility of reconstructing such traumas in favor of an exclusively here-and-now interpretive approach is to risk perpetuating the trauma in all its pathogenicity. By contrast, when trauma can be reexperienced meaningfully in treatment, both behavioral reenactments and trauma-related transference issues can be dramatically clarified. Demonstrating her point with vivid clinical case reports, Share emphasizes the special value of dream interpretation in recovering the full psychological impact of events that occurred in the first few years of life. Through the imagistic dimension of dream formation, unconscious traumatic memories gain access to an expressive vehicle through which the patient, aided by the analyst's understanding, can begin to work through early experiences that have heretofore been dimly known but not felt.
