The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education - Next Generation Insights into Research, Policy, and Practice... The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education - Next Generation Insights into Research, Policy, and Practice (Paperback)
Douglas Proctor, Laura E. Rumbley
R1,072 Discovery Miles 10 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The internationalization of higher education is a world-wide phenomenon, subject to multiple interpretations at national, institutional and individual levels. Still, much of the mainstream literature on this topic is concentrated on a small number of countries and a narrow range of key topics. To address this gap, The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education offers a broader set of perspectives from outside the dominant English-speaking and Western European paradigms, while simultaneously focusing on dimensions of internationalization that are known to be under-researched. Additionally, the editors give primacy to next generation perspectives, not only to amplify our current understanding of key issues around the world, but also to shine a light on possible future agendas for this important aspect of contemporary higher education. The notions of new modes, new topics, and new contexts frame the analysis, providing new pathways for exploring and understanding distinct aspects of this crucially important phenomenon in higher education around the world. Key topics covered include: the current state of research and analysis on the internationalization of higher education aspects of internationalization and international activities which have not previously been explored or have limited current exposure how research into internationalization is conducted, showcasing innovative methodological practices a synthesis of common themes and differences in relation to the future agenda of topics, modes and contexts for internationalization an identification of key areas for future research A thoughtful guide for considering the many possible directions ahead for internationalization in higher education, The Future Agenda for Internationalization in Higher Education is essential reading for academic researchers and graduate students, as well as international education practitioners and leaders keen to make sense of evolving trends in this field.

Designing Quality Authentic Assessments (Hardcover): Tay Hui Yong Designing Quality Authentic Assessments (Hardcover)
Tay Hui Yong
R3,888 Discovery Miles 38 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the principles and practice of authentic assessment. It seeks to answer the following questions. What is authentic assessment? How is authentic assessment different from 'performance assessment' or 'alternative assessment'? How can authentic assessment support learner-centred education, especially when a performance-oriented culture favours pen-and-paper examinations? The book is structured into two major parts. The first, 'Principles of authentic assessment design', provides readers with a conceptual explanation of authenticity; the principles for designing quality authentic assessments for valid evidence of student learning; and guidance about how to develop quality rubrics to structure assessment tasks. The second part of the book, 'Theory into practice' provides examples developed by teachers to demonstrate an understanding of authentic assessment. The subject areas covered include humanities, languages, mathematics, sciences, character and citizenship. Two case studies are discussed to demonstrate how authentic assessment can be used to comprehensively address key learning objectives in a variety of curriculum contexts. This book provides practitioners with concrete examples on how to develop authentic assessment to suit their context and also enhance their students' learning. The book will also enable teachers to face assessment challenges present in our changing world. The Politics of English Second Language Writing Assessment in Global Contexts (Paperback): Todd Ruecker, Deborah Crusan The Politics of English Second Language Writing Assessment in Global Contexts (Paperback)
Todd Ruecker, Deborah Crusan
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reflecting the internationalization of the field of second language writing, this book focuses on political aspects and pedagogical issues of writing instruction and testing in a global context. High-stakes assessment impacts the lives of second language (L2) writers and their teachers around the world, be it the College English Test in China, Common Core-aligned assessments in the U.S., English proficiency tests in Poland, or the material conditions (such as access to technology, training, and other resources) affecting a classroom. With contributions from authors working in ten different countries in a variety of institutional contexts, the chapters examine the uses and abuses of various writing-related assessments, and the policies that determine their form and use. Representing a diverse range of contexts, methods, and disciplines, the authors jointly call for more equitable testing systems that consider the socioeconomic, psychometric, affective, institutional, and needs of all students who strive to gain access to education and employment opportunities related to English language proficiency.

Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education (Hardcover): GD Kuh Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education (Hardcover)
GD Kuh
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

American higher education needs a major reframing of student learning outcomes assessment Dynamic changes are underway in American higher education. New providers, emerging technologies, cost concerns, student debt, and nagging doubts about quality all call out the need for institutions to show evidence of student learning. From scholars at the National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA), Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education presents a reframed conception and approach to student learning outcomes assessment. The authors explain why it is counterproductive to view collecting and using evidence of student accomplishment as primarily a compliance activity. Today's circumstances demand a fresh and more strategic approach to the processes by which evidence about student learning is obtained and used to inform efforts to improve teaching, learning, and decision-making. Whether you're in the classroom, an administrative office, or on an assessment committee, data about what students know and are able to do are critical for guiding changes that are needed in institutional policies and practices to improve student learning and success. Use this book to: * Understand how and why student learning outcomes assessment can enhance student accomplishment and increase institutional effectiveness * Shift the view of assessment from being externally driven to internally motivated * Learn how assessment results can help inform decision-making * Use assessment data to manage change and improve student success Gauging student learning is necessary if institutions are to prepare students to meet the 21st century needs of employers and live an economically independent, civically responsible life. For assessment professionals and educational leaders, Using Evidence of Student Learning to Improve Higher Education offers both a compelling rationale and practical advice for making student learning outcomes assessment more effective and efficient.

Taking Ownership of Accreditation - Assessment Processes That Promote Institutional Improvement and Faculty Engagement... Taking Ownership of Accreditation - Assessment Processes That Promote Institutional Improvement and Faculty Engagement (Paperback)
Amy Driscoll; Diane Cordero de Noriega
R1,015 R846 Discovery Miles 8 460 Save R169 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book demonstrates how a participatory approach to assessment and accreditation in their new forms creates a synergy for learner-centered education. It is a guide to approaching the accreditation process from a campus-wide perspective of ownership - illustrated by rich descriptions of how faculty, students, and administrators at California State University Monterey Bay (CUSMB) engaged with and successfully focused their accreditation processes on the improvement of their practices. The approach that the authors describe was driven by a commitment to go beyond satisfying the accreditation expectations so as to promote ongoing and long-term improvement of student learning. It also reflects the shift of responsibility for assessment within institutions from a designated office to individual faculty and staff, entire departments, and the campus as a whole. The authors document strategies that are practical - ready to use or adapt - that are appropriate for all campuses. They also provide guidelines for the documentation process that accreditation demands. They demonstrate how they reduced traditional resistance to assessment by emphasizing its use for the improvement of student learning, helping faculty with their own teaching, and creating frameworks for continuing improvements that are valued by faculty. The authors emphasize the need for every institution to take into account its unique mission, vision, and core values; and to recognize the importance of individual departmental cultures. Although their accreditation ""triggered"" CSUMB's engagement with assessment, the authors discuss other opportunities for jump-starting the process.

Promoting Assessment as Learning - Improving the Learning Process (Paperback): Ruth Dann Promoting Assessment as Learning - Improving the Learning Process (Paperback)
Ruth Dann
R1,206 Discovery Miles 12 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Promoting Assessment as Learning sets out to re-examine the relationship between assessment and learning in the classroom. It argues that assessment is an important part of pupil learning, and needs to be understood by pupils in order to help them make judgements about their own progress.
This timely book explores the theories of learning and assessment within the context of national tests and also through the theme of self-assessment. It offers practical approaches to help teachers translate national policy into meaningful classroom practice, and suggests ways to help pupils develop their own assessment skills through a process of consolidation, reflection and revision.
This book will appeal to new and practising primary school teachers and headteachers and those on in-service courses. It will also be of interest to students on initial teacher training and higher degree courses.

Assessment Rubrics Decoded - An Educator's Guide (Hardcover): Kelvin Heng Kiat Tan Assessment Rubrics Decoded - An Educator's Guide (Hardcover)
Kelvin Heng Kiat Tan
R3,877 Discovery Miles 38 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rubrics offer concrete artefacts of what schools evaluate to be of merit, and what educators and schools value to be worth rewarding. Assessment Rubrics Decoded offers insights into a myriad of issues that affect, and are affected by, the construction of merit in students' learning and the articulation of (underlying) educational ideologies in the assessment of student achievement. Designed for both students and teachers - who should have parity of involvement in developing and using rubrics - this book covers the problematic issues of assessment in schools while offering readers practical solutions to navigating the ensuing tensions and dilemmas. The notion that rubrics may hinder assessment transparency is also discussed, with examples, to warn against uncritical use of rubrics that may discipline rather than help learners. The perspective of a school leader in providing assessment leadership to rubrics usage across a school is included for extending awareness of rubrics beyond classroom contexts. This provides an informed approach for teachers to understand the stakes and complexities involved in judging learning, and learners, whilst offering concrete options and suggestions to consider. This book will be a valuable resource for classroom teachers, school leaders, teacher educators and researchers interested in the field of assessment rubrics.

Local Language Testing - Design, Implementation, and Development (Paperback): Slobodanka Dimova, Xun Yan, April Ginther Local Language Testing - Design, Implementation, and Development (Paperback)
Slobodanka Dimova, Xun Yan, April Ginther
R1,125 Discovery Miles 11 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Local Language Testing: Design, Implementation, and Development describes the language testing practice that exists in the intermediate space between large-scale standardized testing and classroom assessment, an area that is rarely addressed in the language testing and assessment literature. Covering both theory and practice, the book focuses on the advantages of local tests, fosters and encourages their use, and provides suggested ideas for their development and maintenance. The authors include examples of operational tests with well-proven track records and discuss: the ability of local tests to represent local contexts and values, explicitly and purposefully embed test results within instructional practice, and provide data for program evaluation and research; local testing practices grounded in the theoretical principles of language testing, drawing from experiences with local testing and providing practical examples of local language tests, illustrating how they can be designed to effectively function within and across different institutional contexts; examples of how local language tests and assessments are developed for use within a specific context and how they serve a variety of purposes (e.g., entry-level proficiency testing, placement testing, international teaching assistant testing, writing assessment, and program evaluation). Aimed at language program directors, graduate students, and researchers involved in language program development and evaluation, this is a timely book in that it focuses on the advantages of local tests, fosters and encourages their use, and outlines their development and maintenance. It constitutes essential reading for language program directors, graduate students, and researchers involved in language program development and evaluation.

Threading the Evaluation Needle - The Documentation of Teacher Unprofessional Conduct (Paperback): Todd A DeMitchell, Mark A.... Threading the Evaluation Needle - The Documentation of Teacher Unprofessional Conduct (Paperback)
Todd A DeMitchell, Mark A. Paige
R698 Discovery Miles 6 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Teachers stand at the intersection of educational goals, directing students down the road to success or to the byways of diminished opportunities. They are the most important school variable effecting student achievement. Consequently, placing and retaining only qualified and effective teachers in our nation's classrooms is a critical responsibility of school leaders. Effective supervision and evaluation requires that the school leader possess the knowledge of effective instruction, exhibit skills in documentation of professional conduct, and embrace a professional approach with the will to place and keep students at the center of school policy and practice decisions. Supervising and evaluating teachers is a difficult, but essential work. Research shows that time and expertise are necessary to effectively supervise and to build a case for adverse employment decisions, when necessary. Threading the Evaluation Needle: The Documentation of Teacher Unprofessional Conduct addresses the legal and professional knowledge that structures discipline and dismissal in the public schools. The authors, based on their educational, legal, and research experience, provide templates for various types of documentation necessary to effectively build a case for discipline. This book seeks to give principals the tools and knowledge to institute in good faith a fair and accurate documentation system.

Advancing Theory and Research in Widening Participation (Hardcover): Ellen Boeren, Nalita James Advancing Theory and Research in Widening Participation (Hardcover)
Ellen Boeren, Nalita James
R3,874 Discovery Miles 38 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Issues of access, social exclusion and widening participation dominate educational policy agendas and are a shared global challenge. Participation in higher education and adult lifelong learning activities can be a life-changing experience that opens up new opportunities. However, access remains unequal. People from lower socio-economic backgrounds, those living in the most deprived areas and people from minority ethnic groups are underrepresented. In this book, we focus on how we can move the field of widening participation forward, paying specific attention to the theories and methods we can use to better understand and tackle the problem of underrepresented groups in post-compulsory education, and how individuals and institutions can be supported. We argue that in order to make sense of these issues, it is important to engage in both the findings of widening participation research and the theoretical foundations which underpin them. This way, alternative perspectives on the widening participation agenda and emerging research and policy can be explored from alternative perspectives. This book was originally published as a special issue of Studies in Continuing Education.

Measuring Success - Testing, Grades, and the Future of College Admissions (Hardcover): Jack Buckley, Lynn Letukas, Ben Wildavsky Measuring Success - Testing, Grades, and the Future of College Admissions (Hardcover)
Jack Buckley, Lynn Letukas, Ben Wildavsky
R1,138 Discovery Miles 11 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Standardized tests have become the gateway to higher education . . . but should they be? For more than seventy-five years, standardized tests have been considered a vital tool for gauging students' readiness for college. However, few people-including students, parents, teachers, and policy makers-understand how tests like the SAT or ACT are used in admissions decisions. Once touted as the best way to compare students from diverse backgrounds, these tests are now increasingly criticized as being biased in favor of traditionally privileged groups. A small but growing number of colleges have made such testing optional for applicants. Is this the right way to go? Measuring Success investigates the research and policy implications of test-optional practices, considering both sides of the debate. Does a test-optional policy result in a more diverse student body or improve attainment and retention rates? Drawing upon the expertise of higher education researchers, admissions officers, enrollment managers, and policy professionals, this volume is among the first to investigate the research and policy implications of test-optional practices. Although the test-optional movement has received ample attention, its claims have rarely been subjected to empirical scrutiny. This volume provides a much-needed evaluation of the use and value of standardized admissions tests in an era of widespread grade inflation. It will be of great value to those seeking to strike the proper balance between uniformity and fairness in higher education. Contributors: Andrew S. Belasco, A. Emiko Blalock, William G.
