No Work Vegetable Gardening The Easiest Way to Get Fresh Tasty
Veggies for Your Whole Family Want great tasting veggies from your
own garden but cringe at the thought of doing all that
back-breaking work of maintaining your garden? or If you're
currently gardening with chemicals and have decided that gardening
organically would give you plants with better nutrition and better
taste but you don't want to hang up your tools for 7 years waiting
for your soil to heal. GREAT NEWS NO WORK VEGETABLE GARDENING by
Joyce Zborower provides simple, easy-to-follow instructions for
building and planting a new organic gardening bed right over an old
chemical bed, a grassy spot that's never been planted before, a
rocky area or even in a raised planting bed so you won't have to
bend over to harvest your goodies. And once the bed is ready and
planted, any further work on your part is very minimal. And there
are full-color photos to show you exactly what to do. Is it really
"no work?" ... No, but it's as close as you'll ever get without
hiring someone to take care of it for you.
Learn how to create your own no dig, organic garden with
permaculture design and techniques. Vera's 15 years of experience
as a no dig gardener provides a vast amount of knowledge on growing
fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers. The book is divided into two
sections, container gardening and permaculture kitchen gardening.
Part One shares knowledge especially useful to urban gardeners and
those with little space. Part Two advises on starting and
maintaining a garden. Vera's speciality is creating beautiful and
delicious polycultures and she offers a range of examples to get
you started and the knowledge to experiment. She also includes
recipes for your fresh harvests. Chapters on making compost,
building raised beds, and a monthly job guide make this useful for
all levels of gardener. Vera demonstrates that gardens can look
beautiful and be productive, and her advice and examples encourage
us to look at our own growing spaces in a different light. We no
longer need to hide our veggie patches; they can take centre stage.
Why not incorporate cut flowers with herbs, brassicas and peas? Or
plant a pottager garden? These examples will help people create
edible paradises everywhere, like patios, balconies, windowsills,
allotments, community and school gardens, front and back gardens
and anywhere else we can grow.
"Sustainable Food for the Globe, One Square Foot at a Time" came
about in the strangest way. In August of 2012, the where two news
items that caught my attention. The first was a challenge made by a
group calling themselves "The B Team." The statement was made that
business as usual is currently not working, nor taking care of the
needs of the people in our planet. The challenge - that now is the
time to modify our mindsets and take a look at what each individual
can change to bring about a stronger, richer and more abundant
Global community. Secondly, during that same time period, there
where lots of comments made by so-called "experts," stating that
the world would run out of food by the year 2050. What a paradox,
on the one hand, a group of invigorated people ready to take a
challenge and create a better world; and on the other hand
"nay-sayers" stating that humankind would expire in less than 37
years due to mass starvation. As a gardener, both news items drew
my attention. First, as someone who enjoys working with the earth,
I am in awe of how a small seed put in a little bit of earth;
tended to, making sure it has sun and water, can come out of the
ground as a seedling and within a short period of time becomes a
food-producing plant. So I started doing research on these two
issues. What I found out about the "nay-sayers" group made me very
angry and what I found out about the group making the challenge
made me very hopeful. Thinking about these two issues made me
search for simple yet effective answers; How to create worldwide
food production in Abundance? So in this book I celebrate the first
step of this journey; doing research, asking the first few
questions of many -focusing on how are we going to deal with this
mess? I invite you to ask questions and reflect on answers that
might help our little bit of earth. I have a feeling that millions
and millions of people working together can ensure worldwide food
production in Abundance for our children, our families and
communities where ever in the world they are found.

Ever wondered why supermarket potatoes are so bland and boring? In
the Andes, where potatoes originate, there are thousands of
varieties with bright colours, beautiful markings, unusual shapes
and variations of flavour and cooking quality. In the modern world,
industrialised monoculture has reduced all this diversity down to a
handful of near identical varieties. However, it's incredibly easy
to grow potatoes from seed, and every seed is full of unexplored
diversity. Best known for her Daughter of the Soil blog, Rebsie
Fairholm gives clear and practical instructions for how to make
seeds from potato berries, how to cross different varieties, how to
choose which ones to experiment with, and how to keep your newly
created varieties growing into the future. She gives examples from
her own experiences with all kinds of potatoes, from ordinary
garden varieties to historic Scottish heirlooms and rare Andean
landraces, and explores the different colour possibilities, from
orange flesh to purple flesh. Our ancestors created their own
vegetable varieties in their gardens and took it for granted as a
completely normal thing to do; and then the commercial age came
along and changed our habits, and so it became something of a lost
art. This unique book is a small step towards changing that.
