The rose is the world's favorite flower: its beauty and scent make
it the acknowledged queen of the garden. Roses have been used for
thousands of years as perfume, as decoration, and even in the
cuisine of many countries. The power and appeal of the rose can be
seen in art, history, and in horticulture. "The Little Book of
Roses" opens the door to the magical world of the rose from the
flower's symbolic roles in legend to the secrets of today's top
rose breeders (an industry itself worth millions of dollars).
Besides fascinating rose facts, this Little Book is also sprinkled
throughout with interesting rose trivia. For example, one fluid
ounce of the world's most expensive perfume requires as many as 28
dozen roses! "The Little Book of Roses" offers a pleasing bouquet
of rich illustrations, useful information, and interesting details
affectionately dedicated to this voluptuous blossom.

Born in Florence in 1910, Pietro Porcinai grew up on the classic
grounds of the Villa Gamberaia in Settignano where his father
served as head gardener. Although he studied agriculture in
college, Porcinai's true interest lay in the landscape architecture
practice he founded in 1938. Early projects centered in the area of
Arezzo, whose style reflected modernA ized traditional models. In
the postwar era the office flourished, producing modern gardens of
remarkable design and use of plants. In these works, Porcinai
convincingly demonstrated the affinity between historical
architecture and landscapes unA compromisingly modern. During his
long and productive career he also consulted on autostrada
planning, and designed public parks, memorials, and even a
Pinocchio theme park-at times collaborating with noted architects
such as Renzo Piano, Carlo Scarpa and Oscar Niemeyer. This book,
the first English-language study on Pietro Porcinai provides a
comprehensive and richly illustrated overview of his life and
remarkable achievements.

many of the green gardening books written in recent years.' The
English Garden magazine 'Conversational, interesting, and personal
... it reaffirms the link between what we love to do and why we
should be doing it with nature, the planet and our health in mind.'

A journey through the most unlikely of gardens: the oases of peace
people create in the midst of war In this millennium, we have
become war weary. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Ukraine to South
Sudan and Syria, from Kashmir to the West Bank, conflict is as
contagious and poisonous as Japanese knotweed. Living through it
are people just like us with ordinary jobs, ordinary pressures and
ordinary lives. Against a new landscape of horror and violence it
is up to them to maintain a modicum of normality and colour. For
some, gardening is the way to achieve this. Working in the world's
most dangerous war zones, freelance war correspondent and
photographer Lally Snow has often chanced across a very moving
sight, a testimony to the triumph of the human spirit in adversity,
a celebration of hope and beauty: a war garden. In Kabul, the royal
gardens are tended by a centenarian gardener, though the king is
long gone; in Camp Bastion, bored soldiers improvise tiny gardens
to give themselves a moment's peace; on both sides of the dividing
line in Jerusalem families tend groves of olives and raise
beautiful plants from the unforgiving, disputed landscape; in
Ukraine, families tend their gardens in the middle of a surreal,
frozen war. War Gardens is a surprising, tragic and beautiful
journey through the darkest places of the modern world, revealing
the ways people make time and space for themselves and for nature
even in the middle of destruction. Illustrated with Lally Snow's
own award-winning photography, this is a book to treasure.
Douglas W. Tallamy's first book, Bringing Nature Home, sparked a
national conversation about the link between healthy local
ecosystems and human well-being. In his new book Nature's Best
Hope, Tallamy takes the next step and outlines his vision for a
grassroots approach to conservation. Tallamy advocates for
homeowners everywhere to turn their yards into conservation
corridors that provide wildlife habitats and mitigate the effects
of development and corporate agriculture. This home-based approach
doesn't rely on the federal government and protects the environment
from the whims of politics. It is also easy to do, and readers will
walk away with specific suggestions they can incorporate into their
own yards. Nature's Best Hope is nature writing at its best -
rooted in history, progressive in its advocacy, and above all,
actionable and hopeful. By proposing practical measures that
ordinary people easily can do, Tallamy gives us reason to believe
that the planet can be preserved for future generations.
There is a new generation of gardeners who are planting gardens not
only for their visual beauty but also for their ability to reduce
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In The New Shade Garden, Ken
Druse provides this generation with a comprehensive guide to
creating a shade garden with an emphasis on the adjustments
necessary for our changing climate. Druse offers advice for common
problems facing today's gardeners, from addressing the deer
situation to watering plants without stressing limited resources.
Detailing all aspects of the gardening process, the book covers
basic topics such as designing your own garden, pruning trees,
preparing soil for planting, and the vast array of flowers and
greenery that grow best in the shade. Perfect for new and seasoned
gardeners alike, this wide-ranging encyclopedic manual provides all
the information you need to start or improve upon your own shade
garden.
For decades, gardeners have approached vegetable gardening the same
way: planting in square or rectangular beds or in straight rows,
keeping vegetables separate from flowers, and definitely not mixing
perennial plants with annual ones. According to these old rules,
every insect must be killed, the garden must be tidy, and nothing
should ever be allowed to go to seed. It's time to break the rules!
Today's gardeners are re-envisioning the vegetable garden as a
creative, playful space where the beds may be circles or spirals,
beneficial insects are invited to the party, flowers for cutting
grow right next to annual vegetables (which might be chosen for
their curb appeal as much as their flavor), and a bit of
"untidiness" simply creates a garden that more closely mimics the
natural world. With The Creative Vegetable Gardener, lifestyle
editor and master gardener Kelly Smith Trimble encourages readers
to widen their focus, be playful, and imagine a vegetable garden
that reflects their own unique aesthetic and offers a meditative
sanctuary as well as a source of fresh, homegrown food. From seed
selection to garden layout and regenerative gardening practices,
gardeners of all levels will find Smith Trimble's liberating advice
a pathway to making the garden a place of nourishment for the soul
and creative spirit, while also feeding the body.

What was a "garden" in medieval and early modern British culture
and how was it imagined? How did it change as Europe opened up to
the wider world from the 16th century onwards? In a series of fresh
approaches to these questions, the contributors offer chapters that
identify and discuss newly-discovered pre-modern garden spaces in
archaeology and archival sources, recognize a gendered language of
the garden in fictional descriptions ("fictional" here being taken
to mean any written text, regardless of its purpose), and offer new
analysis of the uses to which gardens - real and imagined - might
be put. Chapters investigate the definitions, forms and functions
of physical gardens; explore how the material space of the garden
was gendered as a secluded space for women, and as a place of
recreation; examine the centrality of garden imagery in medieval
Christian culture; and trace the development of garden motifs in
the literary and artistic imagination to convey the sense of
enclosure, transformation and release. The book uniquely underlines
the current environmental "turn" in the humanities, and
increasingly recognizes the value of exploring human interaction
with the landscapes of the past as a route to health and well-being
in the present.
Join two of the world's most influential garden designers, Piet
Oudolf and Henk Gerritsen, as they describe their ideal perennials,
bulbs, grasses, ferns and small shrubs for your natural garden.
This comprehensive compendium classifies these 1200 plants
according to their behaviour, strengths and uses. An ideal plant is
one that is both beautiful and robust, performing reliably with
very little input from the gardener - and without artificial
fertilizers and pesticides. Rather than striving for big, bold
masses of colourful blooms that are vigorously pruned back as soon
as they have finished flowering, their innovative approach to
gardening involves choosing plants chiefly for their form - leaves,
flower heads and stems included - which means they retain their
natural beauty through all the seasons. Find within: 1200 beautiful
and reliable plants used by top garden designers Full descriptions
and growing instructions Unique easy-to-follow classification
