Politics of Development - A Survey (Hardcover): Heloise Weber Politics of Development - A Survey (Hardcover)
Heloise Weber
R6,248 Discovery Miles 62 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Politics of Development: A Survey provides an overview of the intrinsically political relations of development. It brings together essays written by experts in the politics of development and covers a range of significant and topical concerns: gender, race, indigenous development, social movements, religion, security, environmental concerns, colonialism and its legacies, migration, the political economy of development, trajectories in urbanization, and the agrarian question. It introduces and examines key concepts and approaches which have underpinned development, as well as the struggles it has engendered historically, and in contemporary contexts. This volume provides critical insights into the global politics of development and offers alternative analytical frameworks for understanding the relationships around development and inequalities. The Politics of Development: A Survey is organized in an accessible manner, catering to a wide audience (ranging from undergraduates at University level to practitioners and Non-Governmental Organizations [NGOs] engaged in advocacy as well as practical political aspects), and provides introductions to key issues and themes around contemporary challenges and opportunities in development. The title also includes an A-Z Glossary, covering key terms, organizations, concepts and actors in the politics of development.

Translating Museums - A Counterhistory of South Asian Museology (Paperback): Shaila Bhatti Translating Museums - A Counterhistory of South Asian Museology (Paperback)
Shaila Bhatti
R1,385 Discovery Miles 13 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Shaila Bhatti's immersive study of the Lahore Museum in Pakistan is one of the first books to offer an in-depth historical and ethnographic analysis of a South Asian museum. Bhatti thus presents an alternative example of visitor experience and museum practice to that of the West, which has been the dominant museological model to date. This examination of the Lahore Museum's objects, staff, and visitors (past and present) provides an informative case study that reveals local perceptions and uses of museums in non-Western societies to be fraught with social, political, and cultural implications and appropriations. Through Lahore, Bhatti examines the history of exchange between Britian and South Asia and advances our current understanding of what constitutes postcolonial museum interpretation and its public.

Society (Hardcover, New): Reiner Grundmann, Nico Stehr Society (Hardcover, New)
Reiner Grundmann, Nico Stehr
R19,737 Discovery Miles 197 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is the nature of our current societies? Do we see a clash of civilizations, or the end of history? The advent of globalization, or the birth of the network society? Are we witnessing the emergence of a risk society, or the advent of the knowledge society? More fundamentally, is 'society' an ideological construct that should be abandoned? Coming into English from the Latin term 'societas' via Old French 'societe', the etymology of 'society,' in the sense of a system adopted by a group of co-existing individuals for mutually beneficial purposes, can be traced back at least to the mid-sixteenth century. By the Age of Enlightenment, 'society' was increasingly used in intellectual discourse to characterize human relations, often in contrast to notions of 'the state'. During the nineteenth century, the concept was subject to highly elaborate treatment in various intellectual fields, such as political economy, philosophy, and legal thought; and 'society' continues to be a central conceptual tool, not only for sociology, but also for many other social-science disciplines, such as anthropology, economics, political sciences, and law. The notion resonates beyond the social sciences into the humanities; it is a fundamental concept, like nature, the universe, or the economy. Moreover, 'society' remains a highly contested concept, as was demonstrated, for example, by the controversy surrounding the former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher's pithy assertion of the neoliberal economic wisdom that 'there is no such thing as society' (Woman's Own, 31 October 1987); and by the term's rehabilitation at the turn of the twenty-first century, not least with the ascendancy of the notion of 'civil society'. This four-volume collection, a new title in the Routledge Critical Concepts in Sociology series, brings together both canonical and the best cutting-edge research to document the intellectual origins and development of what remains a key framework within which contemporary work in the social sciences in general, and sociology in particular, proceeds. Edited by Reiner Grundmann and Nico Stehr, two leading scholars in the field, this Routledge Major Work makes available the most useful, important and representative treatments of the subject matter, and helps to make sense of the great variety of perspectives and approaches in which social scientists and other thinkers have understood, and continue to understand, society. Fully indexed and with a comprehensive introduction newly written by the editors, which places the collected material in its historical and intellectual context, Society is an essential reference work, destined to be valued by scholars and students as a vital research resource.

Open Access and the Humanities - Contexts, Controversies and the Future (Hardcover): Martin Paul Eve Open Access and the Humanities - Contexts, Controversies and the Future (Hardcover)
Martin Paul Eve
R1,151 Discovery Miles 11 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If you work in a university, you are almost certain to have heard the term 'open access' in the past couple of years. You may also have heard either that it is the utopian answer to all the problems of research dissemination or perhaps that it marks the beginning of an apocalyptic new era of 'pay-to-say' publishing. In this book, Martin Paul Eve sets out the histories, contexts and controversies for open access, specifically in the humanities. Broaching practical elements alongside economic histories, open licensing, monographs and funder policies, this book is a must-read for both those new to ideas about open-access scholarly communications and those with an already keen interest in the latest developments for the humanities. This title is also available as Open Access via Cambridge Books Online.

Mary Ellen Snodgrass
R6,230 Discovery Miles 62 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The culmination of years of research in dozens of archives and libraries, this fascinating encyclopedia provides an unprecedented look at the network known as the Underground Railroad - that mysterious "system" of individuals and organizations that helped slaves escape the American South to freedom during the years before the Civil War. In operation as early as the 1500s and reaching its peak with the abolitionist movement of the antebellum period, the Underground Railroad saved countless lives and helped alter the course of American history. This is the most complete reference on the Underground Railroad ever published. It includes full coverage of the Railroad in both the United States and Canada, which was the ultimate destination of many of the escaping slaves. "The Underground Railroad: An Encyclopedia of People, Places, and Operations" explores the people, places, writings, laws, and organizations that made this network possible. More than 1,500 entries detail the families and personalities involved in the operation, and sidebars extract primary source materials for longer entries. This encyclopedia features extensive supporting materials, including maps with actual Underground Railroad escape routes, photos, a chronology, genealogies of those involved in the operation, a listing of Underground Railroad operatives by state or Canadian province, a "passenger" list of escaping slaves, and primary and secondary source bibliographies.
