BRITISH DOGS - THEIR VARIETIES, HISTORY, CHARACTERISTICS, BREEDING,
MANAGEMENT, AND EXHIBITION. ILLUSTRATED WITH PORTRAITS OF DOGS OF
THE DAY. By HUGH DALZIEL. PREFACE: WHEN reminded by the Publisher
that a dozen or so lines of Preface were needful in introducing
British Dogs to the public, the following questions were forcibly
presented to my mind First, whether the book should have been
written and, secondly given the necessity for it whether I should
have undertaken the work. Both these questions I propose handing
over to the reader for solution, as I fear I might not be
altogether an unprejudiced judge and in doing so I trust to his
good nature to treat leniently all faults, and to his good sense to
assimilate whatevermay be found worthy. The object aimed at has
been to give, as far as obtainable, a sketch of the origin of each
breed, and an accurate description of the points of excellence of
each variety as demanded by modern taste. Only the initiated know
the minute distinctions between breeds and individual dogs, patent
to the subtle discrimination of the present-day philo-kuon. My
fitness, if fitness there be, to convey this class of information
much sought after nowadays has been acquired as canine critic for
The Field, as kennel editor of The Country, and as a judge at
shows, iv Preface. in which capacities I have visited many of the
great exhibitions of the canine species in France, Germany, and
America, as well as all the principal ones in the United Kingdom,
where I have had exceptional opportunities of enlarging a knowledge
of my favourite animals, which I had all my life been accumulating.
There are parts of the book I can refer to with unqualified
pleasure and unstintedpraise, namely, the chapters contributed by
the friends who have so kindly and ably assisted me. These
contributions are in all cases accredited to the individual
authors, and the views expressed must command, as they well
deserve, the respect which the great experience of the writers
merits. The illustrations are from life, celebrated Dogs of the Day
having been selected, and the artists have, in most instances,
succeeded in giving very correct delineations, showing the
distinguishing character- istics of each breed. CORSINCON.Contents

The Italian Greyhound - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers
together all the best early writing on the breed from our library
of scarce, out-of-print antiquarian books and documents and
reprints it in a quality, modern edition. This anthology includes
chapters taken from a comprehensive range of books, many of them
now rare and much sought-after works, all of them written by
renowned breed experts of their day. These books are treasure
troves of information about the breed - The physical points,
temperaments, and special abilities are given; celebrated dogs are
discussed and pictured; and the history of the breed and pedigrees
of famous champions are also provided. The contents were well
illustrated with numerous photographs of leading and famous dogs of
that era and these are all reproduced to the highest quality. Books
used include: House Dogs And Sporting Dogs by John Meyrick (1861),
A History And Description Of The Modern Dogs Of Great Britain And
Ireland by Rawdon B. Lee (1899), The Twentieth Century Dog by
Herbert Compton (1904) and many others.
Although Gerd Heinrich, a devoted naturalist, specialized in
wasps, Bernd Heinrich tried to distance himself from his
"old-fashioned" father, becoming a hybrid: a modern, experimental
biologist with a naturalist's sensibilities.
In this extraordinary memoir, the award-winning author shares
the ways in which his relationship with his father, combined with
his unique childhood, molded him into the scientist, and man, he is
today. From Gerd's days as a soldier in Europe and the family's
daring escape from the Red Army in 1945 to the rustic Maine farm
they came to call home, Heinrich relates it all in his trademark
style, making science accessible and awe-inspiring.
In the arguments on modern human origins the Qafzeh-Skhul hominans,
based on skeletal analyses, are accepted as "anatomically modern"
and given the lofty title of "Proto-Cro-Magnons." However, their
modernity has been questioned in the literature. In this research,
42 dimensions were measured on the craniofacial bones of Qafzeh,
Skhul, Cro-Magnons, Neanderthals, and other archaic, early, and
recent modern samples from Africa, Western Asia, Europe, and East
Asia (total crania, N=400) to test the null hypothesis that the
Qafzeh-Skhul hominans are 'Proto-Cro-Magnons.' An alternate
hypothesis was also tested: the Qafzeh and Skhul hominan samples
have morphometric affinities to one, some or none of the regional
sample groups in this research. Canonical variate analysis based on
log size/shape and shape D2 for male and female craniofacial data
show quite clearly that the Qafzeh and Skhul hominan samples are
distant from the Cro-Magnons but closer to African and Levantine
(Middle Eastern) sample groups. Hierarchical cluster analysis
presented similar results. Based on the data in this research, the
hypothesis stating that the Qafzeh and Skhul hominans are
"Proto-Cro-Magnons" is rejected. Instead, the alternate hypothesis
is accepted: the Qafzeh and Skhul hominans have strong morphometric
affinities to archaic and early modern Africans and Levantines.
Together, the Qafzeh-Skhul skeletal sample shows strong evidence of
mosaic evolution. In essence, are the Qafzeh and Skhul hominans
descendants of "the" modern African population that left the
continent 200,000 to 150,000 years ago according to the
mitochrondrial DNA genetic evidence? This is certainly possible.
Are the Qafzeh and Skhul hominans ancestors of the later
Cro-Magnons who, supposedly, "replaced" all existing, well-adapted
populations in the Old World--even the remarkable Neanderthals--by
30,000 years ago? According to the craniofacial data in this
research, the answer is no.

Presently in Yellowstone there are almost 200 active research
permits that involve over 500 investigators, but only a small
fraction of this scientific work is reported in the popular press.
Furthermore, the results are mixed and frequently confusing to the
general public. The intent of this book is to explain both the
general issues associated with the region and how science is done
to understand those issues, from wolf and grizzly bear research to
thermal activity. It further describes how science informs policy
in the Greater Yellowstone Region, how scientists from an array of
disciplines do their work, and finally, how the nature of that work
enables or limits future plans for managing the park and
surrounding lands.
This book is a small portion of the continuous flow of ideas that
cross my mind continually. This flow is based on life experiences
good and bad of myself and others. It is intended hopefully to
ignite blazine firestorms of thought, of perspective.
This book explains everything about earthquakes in clear,
straightforward language.
