In Democracy and Mathematics Education, Kurt Stemhagen and Catherine Henney develop a way of thinking about the nature and purposes of math that is inclusive, participatory, and thoroughly human. They use these ideas to create a school mathematics experience that can enhance students' math abilities and democratic potential. They locate mathematics' origins in human activity and highlight the rich but often overlooked links between mathematical activity and democratic, social practices. Democratic mathematics education foregrounds student inquiry and brings to light the moral dimensions of a discipline that has both remarkable utility and inevitable limitations. For math educators, the book's humanities approach helps to see the subject anew. For philosophers, it provides an important real world context for wrestling with perennial and timely questions, engaging democratic and evolutionary theory to transform school math. This alternative approach to mathematics and mathematics education provides a guide for how to use math to make democracy a larger part of school and wider social life. 2021 Winner of the AESA Critics' Choice Book Award.

Technology-enabled Mathematics Education explores how teachers of mathematics are using digital technologies to enhance student engagement in classrooms, from the early years through to the senior years of school. The research underpinning this book is grounded in real classrooms. The chapters offer ten rich case studies of mathematics teachers who have become exemplary users of technology. Each case study includes the voices of leaders, teachers and their students, providing insights into their practices, beliefs and perceptions of mathematics and technology-enabled teaching. These insights inform an exciting new theoretical model, the Technology Integration Pyramid, for guiding teachers and researchers as they endeavour to understand the complexities involved in planning for effective teaching with technology. This book is a unique resource for educational researchers and students studying primary and secondary mathematics teaching, as well as practising mathematics teachers.
Each test should take about 15 minutes, however it is more important that a child completes the test accurately and does not rush their answers. Children will speed up naturally with practice. These tests extend children's learning beyond their expected age-related National Curriculum standard. The testbook provides practice for SATs, GL Assessment and CEM 11+ exams, CATs, the Northern Ireland Transfer Test, Common Entrance and scholarship examinations for independent schools, and all other styles of mathematical test. The testbooks are designed to be used in conjunction with the KS2 Maths workbooks as an additional learning tool. After completion, the maths testpack should be used for final exam preparation. Answers, Progress Charts and a Certificate of Achievement are included at the end of the book. All our materials have been rigorously classroom tested. The methodologies have been successfully used in AE Tuition classes for over 20 years.
This book develops the theoretical perspective on visuospatial reasoning in ecocultural contexts, granting insights on how the language, gestures, and representations of different cultures reflect visuospatial reasoning in context. For a number of years, two themes in the field of mathematics education have run parallel with each other with only a passing acquaintance. These two areas are the psychological perspective on visuospatial reasoning and ecocultural perspectives on mathematics education. This volume examines both areas of research and explores the intersection of these powerful ideas. In addition, there has been a growing interest in sociocultural aspects of education and in particular that of Indigenous education in the field of mathematics education. There has not, however, been a sound analysis of how environmental and cultural contexts impact visuospatial reasoning, although it was noted as far back as the 1980s when Alan Bishop developed his duality of visual processing and interpreting visual information. This book provides this analysis and in so doing not only articulates new and worthwhile lines of research, but also uncovers and makes real a variety of useful professional approaches in teaching school mathematics. With a renewed interest in visuospatial reasoning in the mathematics education community, this volume is extremely timely and adds significantly to current literature on the topic.
Design effective, learner-driven math interventions with this accessible and thought-provoking guidebook. Learn how to set up instruction to promote participation and understanding, plan purposeful, targeted tasks, develop student thinking, and create tools to assess student work in a way that measures learning, not just performance. Chapters explore questions that educators frequently struggle with when designing interventions, offering user-friendly research and evidence-based strategies to help overcome common hurdles. This book is essential reading for anyone seeking an adaptive approach to Tier 2 and 3 interventions that positions struggling students as competent learners.
We live in an increasingly technological and information-rich world. Education is focusing more on enquiry and skills-based approaches. Students, even at the early levels of schooling, are expected to develop a range of skills, including problem solving skills. Creative thinking, using information appropriately and problem solving are important for students in the school curriculum and in daily life. This book will help students learn how to apply mathematical skills in different contexts and explain how they got to their solutions. This book is easy for parents and teachers to use, and teaches multiple strategies for solving problems, using challenging but supportive contexts. The approach is underpinned by the Five E's approach to learning. The course will help student to: * Engage with problems meaningfully * Explore different options for approaching and solving problems * Explain their thought processes * Elaborate on their working and processes and see connections between different areas of mathematics * Evaluate what worked and what didn't, learning from mistakes as well as successes |
