No School Left Behind - Implementation of China's New Mathematics Curriculum Reform (2000-2020) (Hardcover): Wei Gao,... No School Left Behind - Implementation of China's New Mathematics Curriculum Reform (2000-2020) (Hardcover)
Wei Gao, Xian-Wei Liu
R4,496 Discovery Miles 44 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Based on the fieldwork carried out at two elementary schools, Merits School and Pioneer School, in northeastern China, the monograph details how local schools enacted the New Mathematics Curriculum Reform that was launched in early 2000. The trajectory of the reform implementation at each school was plotted out. Both schools resorted to a long-standing quality control mechanism, i.e., teaching norms, to operationalize the reform ideas. The mechanism functioned by placing teachers under measurable supervision and evaluation aligned with the reform. The schools responded to the reform following school people's raising practical concerns, as well as the established school culture. Merits School arrived at a "two-faced strategy" to cope with the reform. Pioneer School managed to maintain a balance between promoting reform pedagogy and maintaining good test rankings. Both schools marginally involved parents in the implementation of the reform. This study suggests that to achieve success, reformers need to place equal emphasis on the transformation of teachers as well as local policymakers. This book enriches the existing literature on the implementation of mathematics curriculum reform at the school level and brings insights into the schools' implementation decisions, which will appeal to policymakers, curriculum researchers and administrators.

Technology-enabled Mathematics Education - Optimising Student Engagement (Paperback): Catherine Attard, Kathryn Holmes Technology-enabled Mathematics Education - Optimising Student Engagement (Paperback)
Catherine Attard, Kathryn Holmes
R1,283 Discovery Miles 12 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Technology-enabled Mathematics Education explores how teachers of mathematics are using digital technologies to enhance student engagement in classrooms, from the early years through to the senior years of school. Each case study includes the voices of leaders, teachers and their students, providing insights into their practices, beliefs and perceptions of mathematics and technology-enabled teaching. These insights inform an exciting new theoretical model, the Technology Integration Pyramid, for guiding teachers and researchers as they endeavour to understand the complexities involved in planning for effective teaching with technology. This book is a unique resource for educational researchers and students studying primary and secondary mathematics teaching, as well as practising mathematics teachers.

Democracy and Mathematics Education - Rethinking School Math for Our Troubled Times (Paperback): Kurt Stemhagen, Catherine... Democracy and Mathematics Education - Rethinking School Math for Our Troubled Times (Paperback)
Kurt Stemhagen, Catherine Henney
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Democracy and Mathematics Education, Kurt Stemhagen and Catherine Henney develop a way of thinking about the nature and purposes of math that is inclusive, participatory, and thoroughly human. They use these ideas to create a school mathematics experience that can enhance students' math abilities and democratic potential. They locate mathematics' origins in human activity and highlight the rich but often overlooked links between mathematical activity and democratic, social practices. Democratic mathematics education foregrounds student inquiry and brings to light the moral dimensions of a discipline that has both remarkable utility and inevitable limitations. For math educators, the book's humanities approach helps to see the subject anew. For philosophers, it provides an important real world context for wrestling with perennial and timely questions, engaging democratic and evolutionary theory to transform school math. This alternative approach to mathematics and mathematics education provides a guide for how to use math to make democracy a larger part of school and wider social life. 2021 Winner of the AESA Critics' Choice Book Award.

Explanation and Proof in Mathematics - Philosophical and Educational Perspectives (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Gila Hanna, Hans Niels... Explanation and Proof in Mathematics - Philosophical and Educational Perspectives (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Gila Hanna, Hans Niels Jahnke, Helmut Pulte
R4,170 Discovery Miles 41 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the four decades since Imre Lakatos declared mathematics a "quasi-empirical science," increasing attention has been paid to the process of proof and argumentation in the field -- a development paralleled by the rise of computer technology and the mounting interest in the logical underpinnings of mathematics. Explanantion and Proof in Mathematics assembles perspectives from mathematics education and from the philosophy and history of mathematics to strengthen mutual awareness and share recent findings and advances in their interrelated fields. With examples ranging from the geometrists of the 17th century and ancient Chinese algorithms to cognitive psychology and current educational practice, contributors explore the role of refutation in generating proofs, the varied links between experiment and deduction, the use of diagrammatic thinking in addition to pure logic, and the uses of proof in mathematics education (including a critique of "authoritative" versus "authoritarian" teaching styles).

A sampling of the coverage:

  • The conjoint origins of proof and theoretical physics in ancient Greece.
  • Proof as bearers of mathematical knowledge.
  • Bridging knowing and proving in mathematical reasoning.
  • The role of mathematics in long-term cognitive development of reasoning.
  • Proof as experiment in the work of Wittgenstein.
  • Relationships between mathematical proof, problem-solving, and explanation.

Explanation and Proof in Mathematics is certain to attract a wide range of readers, including mathematicians, mathematics education professionals, researchers, students, and philosophers and historians of mathematics.
