This book contributes to both mathematical problem solving and the communication of mathematics by students, and the role of personal and home technologies in learning beyond school. It does this by reporting on major results and implications of the Problem@Web project that investigated youngsters' mathematical problem solving and, in particular, their use of digital technologies in tackling, and communicating the results of their problem solving, in environments beyond school. The book has two focuses: Mathematical problem solving skills and strategies, forms of representing and expressing mathematical thinking, technological-based solutions; and students and teachers perspectives on mathematics learning, especially school compared to beyond-school mathematics.

Practise and consolidate knowledge gained from the Student's Book with this write-in workbook full of corresponding learning activities. - Save time when planning with ready-made homework or extension exercises. - Reinforce student's understanding of key mathematical concepts with varied question types, knowledge quizzes and the use of ICT. - Challenge learners with extra practice activities to encourage regular self-assessment.
The Mathematics Teacher's Guide contains a year plan, the four term plans, possible time schedules for a full week and daily step-by-step teaching plans for 40 weeks for the subject. The teaching plans include the following: the weekly teaching plan, hints and essential information as background knowledge before the lessons are tackled, the rhymes and songs mentioned in the teaching plan, complete step-by-step lessons for each day and guidance on how to complete the prescribed assessment tasks. The CD in the Teacher's Guide contains the year and term plans for the subject, so that the teacher can print it out and keep it at hand, free resources for teacher and learner, free prescribed worksheets, the theme-oriented stories mentioned in the teaching plans, the sheet music for the songs in the teaching plans and the assessment forms and rubrics. The Teacher's Guide is written by experts in the field of the Foundation Phase. All the authors have years of experience and have been involved in series which has been successfully used in schools. The series has been developed under the guidance of Mart Meij whose various educational series, from Grade R to 3, are widely used by schools. The New All-In-One series is nationally recognised and used in many schools. The Teacher's Guides not only provide lessons for the teacher that describe exactly what to do, but also background information so that the teacher knows why certain instructions are included in the lesson. The teaching plans include innovative, multisensory activities that promote active learning and accommodate different learning styles. The guides contain a CD with full colour free resources which can be used over and over by the teacher and the learner. Free worksheets on the CD can be downloaded and printed so that it is not necessary to buy workbooks.
This book brings together international research on school teachers', and university lecturers' uses of digital technology to enhance teaching and learning in mathematics. It includes contributions that address theoretical, methodological, and practical challenges for the field with the research lens trained on the perspectives of teachers and teaching. As countries around the world move to integrate digital technologies in classrooms, this book collates research perspectives and experiences that offer valuable insights, in particular concerning the trajectories of development of teachers' digital skills, knowledge and classroom practices.
What does it mean to have a visual representation of a mathematical object, concept, or process? What visualization strategies support growth in mathematical thinking, reasoning, generalization, and knowledge? Is mathematical seeing culture-free? How can information drawn from studies in blind subjects help us understand the significance of a multimodal approach to learning mathematics? Toward a Visually-Oriented School Mathematics Curriculum explores a unified theory of visualization in school mathematical learning via the notion of progressive modeling. Based on the author's longitudinal research investigations in elementary and middle school classrooms, the book provides a compelling empirical account of ways in which instruction can effectively orchestrate the transition from personally-constructed visuals, both externally-drawn and internally-derived, into more structured visual representations within the context of a socioculturally grounded mathematical activity. Both for teachers and researchers, a discussion of this topic is relevant in the history of the present. The ubiquity of technological tools and virtual spaces for learning and doing mathematics has aroused interest among concerned stakeholders about the role of mathematics in these contexts. The book begins with a prolegomenon on the author's reflections on past and present visual studies in mathematics education. In the remaining seven chapters, visualization is pursued in terms of its role in bringing about progressions in mathematical symbolization, abduction, pattern generalization, and diagrammatization. Toward a Visually-Oriented School Mathematics Curriculum views issues surrounding visualization through the eyes of a classroom teacher-researcher; it draws on findings within and outside of mathematics education that help practitioners and scholars gain a better understanding of what it means to pleasurably experience the symmetric visual/symbolic reversal phenomenon - that is, seeing the visual in the symbolic and the symbolic in the visual."
Why do some students achieve more than others? Do we have to wait until pupils are ready? Can children discover math for themselves? Does language interfere with the learning of math? This classic text, written from the viewpoint of the math teacher, provides answers to these and many more questions. Each chapter explores a particular issue that illustrates the interaction between theory and practice. New chapters have been included on cognition, pattern, and ICT.
Teaching Mathematics: Foundation to Senior Phase is the second edition of the first South African text on mathematics methodology. It includes reference to the South African mathematics syllabus as contained in the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and focuses on typical challenges faced in the mathematics classroom in South Africa and southern African countries. Teaching Mathematics also contributes to the Africanisation of the discipline of mathematics education by stimulating thought and research about African perspectives and indigenous knowledge, including the language of location and the importance of using place-based examples in the classroom. The text makes use of African contexts in the teaching of mathematics, using African examples to which learners can relate, such as local names, artefacts, and elements of cultural heritage. Teaching Mathematics has a unique structure that takes readers through the stages of how learners learn mathem at ics, and how to teach mathematics, before drilling down to specific themes. The book provides practical pedagogy that will connect student teachers to the bigger picture of mathematics. This textbook will encourage student teachers to feel positive about mathematics and their role in teaching it, and to enter the classroom confident that they are equipped with the practical knowledge, skills and strategies for teaching mathematics.

"Scottish Heinemann Maths" offers flexible and easy-to-manage ways to plan lessons and a programme of work that reflects the key recommendations of the HMI report "Improving Mathematics Education 5-14". The "Organising and Planning Guide" gives the rationale and ethos of SHM, linking the component parts and advising on planning. A customisable CD at each stage gives 5-14 levelled planning and a weekly planning template. The "Teaching File" provides easy to follow instructions for each lesson. Lessons begin with lively mental activities, followed by a broad range of interactive teaching activities. Structured pupil activities consolidate, reinforce and extend topics, and there are clear suggestions for follow-ups to the main points of the lesson. The progression through each topic is carefully structured to provide a balance of oral and practical work. SHM has pupil resources that are clear, fun and easy to use. Activity books are used for SHM1-4, textbooks and extension textbooks for SHM3-7. A flexible strategy helps teachers monitor pupil progress and inform lesson planning. It offers a three-strand approach to assessment - ongoing (at the end of small blocks of work), assessment for specific topics and longer-term, end-of-level assessment. SHM has been purposefully written to help children achieve a higher standard of attainment. It provides a fast pace of learning and uses a direct, interactive method of teaching, placing considerable emphasis on oral and mental mathematics.

Teacher education seeks to transform prospective and/or practicing teachers from neophyte possibly uncritical perspectives on teaching and learning to more knowledgeable, adaptable, analytic, insightful, observant, resourceful, reflective and confident professionals ready to address whatever challenges teaching secondary mathematics presents. This transformation occurs optimally through constructive engagement in tasks that foster knowledge for teaching secondary mathematics. Ideally such tasks provide a bridge between theory and practice, and challenge, surprise, disturb, confront, extend, or provoke examination of alternatives, drawn from the context of teaching. We define tasks as the problems or activities that, having been developed, evaluated and refined over time, are posed to teacher education participants. Such participants are expected to engage in these tasks collaboratively, energetically, and intellectually with an open mind and an orientation to future practice. The tasks might be similar to those used by classroom teachers (e.g., the analysis of a graphing problem) or idiosyncratic to teacher education (e.g., critique of videotaped practice). This edited volume includes chapters based around unifying themes of tasks used in secondary mathematics teacher education. These themes reflect goals for mathematics teacher education, and are closely related to various aspects of knowledge required for teaching secondary mathematics. They are not based on the conventional content topics of teacher education (e.g., decimals, grouping practices), but on broad goals such as adaptability, identifying similarities, productive disposition, overcoming barriers, micro simulations, choosing tools, and study of practice. This approach is innovative and appeals both to prominent authors and to our target audiences.
