This book develops a framework for discussing primary school teachers making changes to their understandings and practices. The framework has been developed to allow the complexity of external and internal aspects of change processes to be explored in a holistic way. External factors influencing teachers include increased specification of the curriculum, changing demands for styles of pedagogy and a rhetoric of Lifelong Learning. Such factors have to be looked at in relation to individual teacher's internal responses to mathematics. For many primary school teachers mathematics is a subject that causes concern; its place within their personal biographies may be uncomfortable and replete with memories of confusion, pain and limited success. Professional understandings of mathematics build upon the understandings from personal histories. Discussing teacher change within the interplay of the external and internal is inherently difficult. Responses to this difficulty have tended to take the form of simplifying the task and dealing with the external separately from the internal. This book will be of interest to a wide range of people working in the field of primary mathematics education, including policy makers, Initial Teacher Education lecturers, Master's students and researchers, practising primary school teachers and those engaged in the management of mathematics in primary schools. While the context of the book is specific to a period of time when a National Numeracy Strategy was being introduced into schools in England, the themes that the chapters tackle are broader and consider issues of interest to anyone concerned with the development of mathematics teaching.
This new series provides all the practice a child needs to build confidence in multiplication and division. More than 400 questions offer great revision of essential multiplication tables facts and guide every child through the processes of short and long multiplication and short and long division.

Create confident and capable mathematicians with accessible explanations and engaging activities. This book gradually builds on prior knowledge to deepen understanding through clear explanations, worked examples and hundreds of differentiated questions, as well as a range of activities that you can choose from to build your lessons and teaching plans. Designed to be used flexibly, this scheme covers the four 'what matters' statements and follows the five principles of progression from the Curriculum for Wales. - Develop pupils' conceptual understanding and communication with symbols throughout using plenty of worked examples and banded questions that get progressively more difficult - Target fluency, logical reasoning and strategic competence by using the markers included in each exercise question - Improve outcomes by selecting from banded questions most suited to enable progression - Ease the transition between progression steps with skill-checker activities at the start of each topic and review questions after each chapter - Link topics to other areas of learning, such as Science and Technology, with cross-curricular activities and discussion points - Improve pupils' understanding of maths in finance with a dedicated chapter and financial contexts highlighted throughout
Highly motivating differentiated Student Books develop confidence, fluency and problem-solving, supporting progression: *Full ability range: Pi (Tier 1), Theta (Tier 2) and Delta (Tier 3)* Unit structure based on mastery lessons, formative test, consolidation and extension lessons and a summative unit test* Reflection (metacognition) is explicitly encouraged to build perseverance and confidence* STEM and Finance lessons highlight these important links to using maths in real life* Reasoning and Problem-solving are nurtured in preparation for progressing to GCSE If you're an institution you can get the answers for this book as a free download. Although proving is core to mathematics as a sense-making activity, it currently has a marginal place in elementary classrooms internationally. Blending research with practical perspectives, this book addresses what it would take to elevate the place of proving at elementary school. The book uses classroom episodes from two countries to examine different kinds of proving tasks and the proving activity they can generate in the elementary classroom. It examines further the role of teachers in mediating the relationship between proving tasks and proving activity, including major mathematical and pedagogical issues that arise for teachers as they implement each kind of proving task. In addition to its contribution to research knowledge, the book has important implications for teaching, curricular resources, and teacher education.

Category Description for Kumon Math Workbooks (1-6):
The series is meant to be self-directed. Students take charge of their own learning on every level. They complete pages, check their work, record their scores, and determine whether to move on or review. The pace almost guarantees success. Children should work a "few" pages a day; assignments should take about 20 minutes to complete. Pages are marked with the skill level required at top and the points each question is valued at (a very young child will need some help totaling points). Very short instruction (or an example) is given on a few pages. For example, there is a short explanation when children begin to subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number where borrowing is needed. However, the child is given every opportunity to intuit this beforehand. By the time he reaches this page, he has already been subtracting double-digit numbers for many pages. Some of these would require borrowing, but, since they are able to subtract, say, 7 from 12, the Kumon method wants the child to see a pattern when increasing to 7 from 22, 7 from 32, etc. This does remind me of the approach used in Miquon as well. Besides these very infrequent helps there are just some small prompts for children to look for patterns in their answers, and words of encouragement. Pages are pleasing to the eye; they are colored, clean, and problems are well-spaced. The Kumon method has been used successfully with children around the world for over 50 years. It does seem like it would help a child to take charge of his own learning and help himself to understanding rather than being spoon-fed each bite. For Kumon math earlier than Grade 1, see the Kumon section in Early Learning.
