A concise yet comprehensive guide for new teachers, concerning the development of mathematics teaching in secondary schools, and the controversies which surround it. After a brief summary of the historical context, a series of short articles provide a range of perspectives on various issues of current debate, which may help new teachers in the development of their own teaching styles. Topics include the impact of computers and calculators on maths teaching; different arguments for the use of published schemes and of more investigational approaches to the curriculum; and the way in which social and cultural factors can affect the teaching of certain mathematical topics. The final section discusses how teachers might wish to continue their professional development through action research in their own classrooms.

If our goal is to broaden and deepen students' awareness and understanding of mathematics, we advance the idea that engaging students with what we metaphorically call the personality of math. That is, we think that students who engage with the math's (1) human champions, (2) with its history and philosophy, and (3) with the nature of its problems and inferential challenges, are more likely to have a positive attitude toward math that will encourage greater learning.

A volume in Research in Mathematics Education Series Editor Barbara J. Dougherty, University of Mississippi The purpose of this book is to document the work of the Show-Me Project (1997-2007) and to highlight lessons learned about curriculum implementation. Although the Show-Me Project was charged with promoting the dissemination and implementation of four distinct comprehensive curriculum programs (Connected Mathematics, Mathematics in Context, MathScape, and MathThematics), most of the lessons learned from this work are not curriculum specific. Rather, they cut across the four programs and share commonalities with standards-based curriculum reform at any level. We believe that documenting these lessons learned will be one of the legacies of the Show-Me Project We anticipate that the comprehensive nature of this work will attract readers from multiple audiences that include state and district mathematics supervisors, middle grades mathematics teachers and administrators involved in curriculum reform, as well as mathematics teacher educators. Those about to embark on the review of curriculum materials will appreciate reading about the processes employed by other districts. Readers with interests in a particular curriculum program will be able to trace the curriculum-specific chapters to gain insights into how the design of the curricula relate to professional development, adoption and implementation issues, and teachers' personal experience using the curriculum materials. Individuals who provide professional development at the middle grades level will find chapters that they can use for both general and focused discussions. Teachers at all stages of implementation will recognize their own experiences in reading and reflecting on the stories of teacher change. Mathematics educators will find ideas on how these curricula can be used in the preparation of preservice middle grades teachers.

This open access book examines multiple facets of language diversity
This title forms part of the Little Library programme, which consists of a Literacy Kit, Numeracy Kit and Life Skills Kit. These were developed to respond to a need for high-quality, indigenous books for the younger members of our communities, and have been successfully used in schools for the last ten years. This title is found in the updated, OBE version of the Little Library Maths Kit, now called the Little Library Numeracy Kit. The Numeracy Kit keeps seven of the best stories, and introduces five new ones - all of them trialled in classrooms around the country. In Keep the change, Ryan has a lucky day when a one hundred rand note falls into his hands. This sets off a chain of events where his friends and family buy gifts for themselves and also for their loved ones. Mathematical themes include money, totals, buying and working out change.
The book focuses on the latest developments of the Anthropological Theory of the Didactic (ATD) and its links with other approaches in mathematics education. Leading researchers in the ATD and especially its creator, Yves Chevallard, present recent research results, theoretical advances and new methodologies in this approach, concerning critical educational problems at all levels. The book is addressed to researchers in mathematics education and all related fields, to teacher educators and teachers in primary, secondary and tertiary education interested in curriculum issues and research in didactics. The book includes four sections that correspond to four axes of current research in the framework of the ATD. The first one studies the relations between the ATD and other research frameworks. The second section focuses on the crucial role of didactics in teacher education, and the experiences carried out at different instructional levels. The third section addresses the curriculum problem in the historical transition from the classical paradigm of visiting works to the emerging didactic paradigm of questioning the world. The last section is about research in didactics at the university level, with investigations about the analysis of didactic transposition processes and the design and implementation of various instructional formats.

Combinatorics and Reasoning: Representing, Justifying and Building Isomorphisms is based on the accomplishments of a cohort group of learners from first grade through high school and beyond, concentrating on their work on a set of combinatorics tasks. By studying these students, the editors gain insight into the foundations of proof building, the tools and environments necessary to make connections, activities to extend and generalize combinatoric learning, and even explore implications of this learning on the undergraduate level. This volume underscores the power of attending to basic ideas in building arguments; it shows the importance of providing opportunities for the co-construction of knowledge by groups of learners; and it demonstrates the value of careful construction of appropriate tasks. Moreover, it documents how reasoning that takes the form of proof evolves with young children and discusses the conditions for supporting student reasoning.
Researchers examining children's mathematics acquisition are now questioning the belief that children learn mathematics principally through formalized, in-school mathematics education. There is increasing evidence that children gain mathematical understanding through their participation in out-of-school cultural practices and that their mathematics only occasionally resembles what they learn in the classroom. Culture and Cognitive Development presents the latest research by Dr. Geoffrey Saxe on this issue. In examinations of the mathematical understandings of child candy sellers in an urban center in northeastern Brazil, Dr. Saxe finds sharp contrasts between mathematics as practiced in school and in real-world settings. In this unique research project he presents a penetrating conceptual treatment of the interplay between culture and cognitive development, filling a void in current research literature. Subjects examined include: the interplay between sociocultural and cognitive developmental processes the differences between math knowledge learned in and out of the classroom the ways math learning in the classroom is modified by children's out-of-school mathematics and, correspondingly, how practical out-of-school mathematics use is modified by formal education
Eminent scholars from around the globe gathered to discuss how
educational systems would change if the prevailing principles of
constructivism were applied to three major aspects of those systems
-- knowledge and learning, communication, and environment. This
volume provides documentation of the proceedings of this important
meeting - - the Early Childhood Action Group of the Sixth
International Congress on Mathematics Education.
