The International Energy Agency's Task 13 is to advance solar building technologies. The Bauhaus Building in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius in 1926, represents a "built manifesto of Bauhaus ideas" and is one of modernism's most important buildings. Showing a presence and highlighting the significance of female architects for contemporary building culture is the guiding principle of the show Architektinnen BDA, the Association of German Architects Berlin's contribution to the festival Women in Architecture 2021. Mayfair, bounded by Oxford Street, Regent Street, Piccadilly and Park Lane, took its name from a fair that was held for a fortnight every May, near today's Curzon Street, and was finally abandoned when a wave of housebuilding in the eighteenth century displaced it. Today Mayfair is probably London's most prestigious district, still retaining its 'town within a town' ambience. Although it is generally agreed that the architectural character of Mayfair is better preserved than that of many other areas of London, it has nevertheless experienced considerable redevelopment, especially during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. For example, Grosvenor Square, now home to the Canadian and American embassies, has lost an incredible forty-seven historic houses since 1935, only three survive. This visually stunning and authoritative new book, by architectural historian Oliver Bradbury, showcases many of the most important lost buildings - some well remembered and much missed, others completely forgotten. One of a confusing muddle of terraced houses to the south east of the Celsus Library in Ephesus is published in this large format excavation report. This house is fronted by a stoa and then rises up a slope, through peristyl and atrium to inner rooms. Although architectural remains of many periods are preserved, they tend towards the earlier periods c.100BC to 100AD. Architectural and technological features (including elaborate canals for water supply) are published and finds are catalogued and discussed, ranging from stauettes to teeth.
