The Need for Certainty - A Sociological Study of Conventional Religion (Hardcover): Robert Towler The Need for Certainty - A Sociological Study of Conventional Religion (Hardcover)
Robert Towler
R2,845 Discovery Miles 28 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1984, The Need for Certainty explores the different ways in which people can be religious within the conventional traditions of the main Christian denominations. Based on in-depth analysis of letters sent to John Robinson, then Bishop of Woolwich, after the publication of his book Honest to God, The Need for Certainty describes five contrasting ways of being religious and explores how, despite being mutually incompatible, they are able to coexist in the churches. In doing so, it argues that a proper grasp of this wide variation in styles of religiousness is a prerequisite for quantitative surveys of religion. Each contrasting religious style is explored in turn and illustrated with quotations from the original letters. The intense desire for religious certainty is extensively explored and presented as a debased, but common, form of religious aspiration that often leads to the degeneration of faith. The Need for Certainty is ideal for those with an interest in Christianity, the sociology of religion, and theology.

An Introduction to the Study of Christianity (Hardcover): Frank Dodd An Introduction to the Study of Christianity (Hardcover)
Frank Dodd
R2,511 Discovery Miles 25 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1938, An Introduction to the Study of Christianity is a consideration of what is truly essential in the Christian faith. The book provides a detailed survey of key elements relating to the origin and growth of Christianity, and puts forward the argument that any apparent blemishes or mistakes are the result of human imperfection and misunderstanding of the real teaching of Jesus and his immediate followers, rather than of any shortcomings in the teaching itself. It first sets out the foundations of Christianity and then calls attention to the different interpretations that successive generations of Christians have placed on them. Exploring the history of the Christian faith up to the 1930s, An Introduction to the Study of Christianity will appeal to those with an interest in the history of religion, Christianity, theology, and religious studies.

Bridge to Islam - A Study of the Religious Forces of Islam and Christianity in the Near East (Hardcover): Erich W. Bethmann Bridge to Islam - A Study of the Religious Forces of Islam and Christianity in the Near East (Hardcover)
Erich W. Bethmann
R3,249 Discovery Miles 32 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Drawing attention to the common beliefs between Islam and Christianity, the book examines the relationship between these two prominent religions and poses the argument that it is only through a proper appreciation of the differences in spiritual attitudes that a bridge of understanding and knowledge can be built between them. It traces the religious histories of different countries in the Middle East and assesses the position of Islam and Christianity in each one. Bridge to Islam will appeal to those with an interest in the history of Christianity, the history of Islam, religious studies, and the Middle East.

Peter Abelard - Philosophy and Christianity in the Middle Ages (Hardcover): Leif Grane Peter Abelard - Philosophy and Christianity in the Middle Ages (Hardcover)
Leif Grane
R2,852 Discovery Miles 28 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1970, Peter Abelard provides an exploration into the social and religious background to the story of Abelard and Heloise. The book presents the twelfth century as an age of renaissance, which saw the revival of Greek philosophy and Roman law, a renaissance just as important as that which was to come three centuries later. Through an examination of the life of Peter Abelard, the book offers an insight into this age of enlightenment in which dialects flourished and religious thought began to break away from the bonds of traditionalism. Peter Abelard will appeal to those with an interest in religious and social history, medieval history, and the story of Abelard and Heloise.

The Force of the Feminine - Women, Men and the Church (Hardcover): Margaret-Ann Franklin The Force of the Feminine - Women, Men and the Church (Hardcover)
Margaret-Ann Franklin
R3,247 Discovery Miles 32 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1986. The Force of the Feminine brings together the work of Christians from a number of denominations in examining different aspects of the task of converting the Church to the 'feminine'. Women have by and large occupied a subordinate position within the Church: men have written the theology; in the majority of denominations only men have always been permitted to be priests or ministers. The book explores how to awaken individual Christians to the need to feminise Church structures and, further, the possible need to rethink the very notion of God. The Force of the Feminine will appeal to those with an interest in religious studies, the history of Christianity, and religion and gender.

Christianity and Social Engagement in China (Hardcover): Bee Bee Sng, Francis K G Lim Christianity and Social Engagement in China (Hardcover)
Bee Bee Sng, Francis K G Lim
R4,125 Discovery Miles 41 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How does Christianity continue to experience growth in an increasingly authoritarian political system that enforces strict regulations on religion? How are ordinary Christians affected by social and political changes in the country, and how do they make their influence felt in wider society? Taking Chinese Christians' experience as a case study, Lim and Sng examine the possibilities and limitations of Christian engagement in society under an authoritarian regime. They look especially at efforts by religious individuals and groups who are seeking to address social issues by engaging in unobtrusive and non-antagonistic activities that interact with controlling state institutions. Their emphasis is on everyday lived religion, analysing how Christians express their faith in their everyday activity and not only in spaces demarcated as falling within the religious domain. This book is a valuable reference for scholars and students looking to understand religion in relation to politics, culture and everyday life in rapidly modernising East Asian societies and particularly in China.

Daniel King
R1,551 Discovery Miles 15 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There are also detailed appendices detailing the patriarchs of the different Syriac denominations, and another appendix listing useful online resources for students. Christianity and Fear - A Study in History and in the Psychology and Hygiene of Religion (Hardcover): Oscar Pfister Christianity and Fear - A Study in History and in the Psychology and Hygiene of Religion (Hardcover)
Oscar Pfister
R5,393 Discovery Miles 53 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1948, Christianity and Fear explores the nature and history of Christian love in relation to the problem of fear. Based on methods of depth psychology and mental hygiene, the book argues for the necessity of a general concentration of the Christian religion and way of life upon the unity of love through faith and faith through love. It presents the struggle between the teaching of Christian love and the many instances of disputes on dogma that have prompted hatred and fear throughout ecclesiastical history. By using the theory of fear and compulsions, it attempts to explain the directions assumed by these aberrations in Christian history and to highlight love as the essence of the teaching of Jesus. Christianity and Fear will appeal to those with an interest in the history of Christianity, theology, and the psychology of religion.

Caring Deeply About Church Planting - Twelve Keys from the Life of Jesus (Hardcover): Rich Kao Caring Deeply About Church Planting - Twelve Keys from the Life of Jesus (Hardcover)
Rich Kao
R3,240 Discovery Miles 32 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Never has the need for church planting been more acute or more necessary. The world around us is beset with problems of every kind-political, social, economic, racial, and moral. The list is endless, and the difficulties are systemic and entrenched. The best minds, institutions, and efforts are being marshaled to address these problems, but are we getting to the root issues? Could it be that the solutions lie elsewhere? Indeed, the greatest reformer to ever live told us the hope we need comes from the church. Yes, the church, as anemic and as irrelevant as it may seem to some (or many). Jesus said of the community He would birth, "You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth" (Matt. 5:13-14). The church, in all its forms, from small to big, whether found in the countryside or in megacities is God's redeeming force for society, for culture, and for the nations. The church is God's secret weapon and His change agent for the world. He's all in on the church. As such the church is God's organizational servant on the earth. It's to be an enterprise of the highest quality. It's to sparkle with kingdom power, love, and truth. As Ephesians 3:10 states, "[God's] intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms." For such a task, outstanding leaders are needed. Great leaders are not just for the arenas of business, politics, or the military. The church must also focus on recruiting, training, and deploying the best. As the leader goes, so goes the organization. This book assists in the great endeavor of planting churches. It gives church planters a biblical and conceptual framework so they can be armed with a map for how to go about establishing new works. This framework is rooted in the humble yet glorious, small yet significant, quiet yet powerful ways of Jesus.

Religion and Politics in Contemporary Russia - Beyond the Binary of Power and Authority (Hardcover): Tobias Koellner Religion and Politics in Contemporary Russia - Beyond the Binary of Power and Authority (Hardcover)
Tobias Koellner
R4,129 Discovery Miles 41 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on extensive original research at the local level, this book explores the relationship between Russian Orthodoxy and politics in contemporary Russia. It reveals close personal links between politicians at the local, regional and national levels and their counterparts at the equivalent level in the Russian Orthodox Church - priests and monks, bishops and archbishops - who are extensively consulted about political decisions. It outlines a convergence of conservative ideology between politicians and clerics and also highlights that, despite working closely together, there are nevertheless many tensions. The book examines in detail particular areas of cooperation and tension: reform to religious education and a growing emphasis on traditional moral values, the restitution of former church property and the introduction of new festive days. Overall, the book concludes that there is much uncertainty, ambiguity and great local variation.

Peter Paul Rubens and the Counter-Reformation Crisis of the Beati moderni (Paperback): Ruth S. Noyes Peter Paul Rubens and the Counter-Reformation Crisis of the Beati moderni (Paperback)
Ruth S. Noyes
R1,310 Discovery Miles 13 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Peter Paul Rubens and the Crisis of the Beati Moderni takes up the question of the issues involved in the formation of recent saints - or Beati moderni (modern Blesseds) as they were called - by the Jesuits and Oratorians in the new environment of increased strictures and censorship that developed after the Council of Trent with respect to legal canonization procedures and cultic devotion to the saints. Ruth Noyes focuses particularly on how the new regulations pertained to the creation of emerging cults of those not yet canonized, the so-called Beati moderni, such as Jesuit founders Francis Xavier and Ignatius Loyola, and Filippo Neri, founder of the Oratorians. Centrally involved in the book is the question of the fate and meaning of the two altarpiece paintings commissioned by the Oratorians from Peter Paul Rubens. The Congregation rejected his first altarpiece because it too specifically identified Filippo Neri as a cult figure to be venerated (before his actual canonization) and thus was caught up in the politics of cult formation and the papacy's desire to control such pre-canonization cults. The book demonstrates that Rubens' second altarpiece, although less overtly depicting Neri as a saint, was if anything more radical in the claims it made for him. Peter Paul Rubens and the Crisis of the Beati Moderni offers the first comparative study of Jesuit and Oratorian images of their respective would-be saints, and the controversy they ignited across Church hierarchies. It is also the first work to examine provocative Philippine imagery and demonstrate how its bold promotion specifically triggered the first wave of curial censure in 1602.

Evangelicals and the Philosophy of Science - The Victoria Institute, 1865-1939 (Hardcover): Stuart Mathieson Evangelicals and the Philosophy of Science - The Victoria Institute, 1865-1939 (Hardcover)
Stuart Mathieson
R3,539 Discovery Miles 35 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the debates around religion and science at the influential Victoria Institute. Founded in London in 1865, and largely drawn from the evangelical wing of the Church of England, it had as its prime objective the defence of 'the great truths revealed in Holy Scripture' from 'the opposition of science, falsely so called'. The conflict for them was not between science and religion directly, but what exactly constituted true science. Chapters cover the Victoria Institute's formation, its heyday in the late nineteenth century, and its decline in the years following the First World War. They show that at stake was more than any particular theory; rather, it was an entire worldview, combining theology, epistemology, and philosophy of science. Therefore, instead of simply offering a survey of religious responses to evolutionary theory, this study demonstrates the complex relationship between science, evangelical religion, and society in the years after Darwin's Origin of Species. It also offers some insight as to why conservative evangelicals did not display the militancy of some American fundamentalists with whom they shared so many of their intellectual commitments. Filling in a significant gap in the literature around modern attitudes to religion and science, this book will be of keen interest to scholars of Religious Studies, the History of Religion, and Science and Religion.

Divine Providence in Early Modern Economic Thought (Paperback): Joost Hengstmengel Divine Providence in Early Modern Economic Thought (Paperback)
Joost Hengstmengel
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this important volume, Joost Hengstmengel examines the doctrine of divine providence and how it served as explanation and justification in economic debates in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries throughout Western Europe. The author discusses five different areas in which God was associated with the economy: international trade, division of labour, value and price, self-interest, and poverty and inequality. Ultimately, it is shown that theological ideas continued to influence economic thought beyond the Medieval period, and that the science of economics as we know it today has theological origins. Interdisciplinary in nature, this book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in the history of economic thought, the history of theology, philosophy and intellectual history.
