Electrification - Accelerating the Energy Transition (Paperback): Pami Aalto Electrification - Accelerating the Energy Transition (Paperback)
Pami Aalto
R3,136 Discovery Miles 31 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Electrification: Accelerating the Energy Transition offers a widely applicable framework to delineate context-sensitive pathways by which this transition can be accelerated and lists the types of processes and structures that may hinder progress towards this goal. The framework draws insights from well-established literature, ranging from technological studies to socio-technical studies of energy transitions, on to strategic niche management approaches, (international) political economy approaches, and institutionalist literatures, while also adopting wider social theoretical ideas from structuration theory. Contributors discuss a multitude of case studies drawn from global examples of electrification projects. Brief case studies and text boxes help users further understand this domain and the technological, infrastructural and societal structures that may exercise significant powers.

Cross-Border Resource Management (Paperback, 4th edition): Rongxing Guo Cross-Border Resource Management (Paperback, 4th edition)
Rongxing Guo
R4,047 Discovery Miles 40 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cross-Border Resource Management, Fourth Edition addresses theoretical and analytical issues relating to cross-border resource management, particularly in a changing world. The book holistically explores issues where two entities share a border, such as sovereign countries, dependent states and others, where each seeks to maximize their political and economic interests regardless of impacts on the environment. This new edition has been completely revised to reflect current issues, with new cases and videos in every chapter and expanded coverage of natural disasters, climate change and modeling. Serving as a single resource to explore the many facets of managing and utilizing natural resources when they extend across defined borders, this new edition provides environmental managers and researchers in environmental management and policy with practical solutions for cross-border cooperation in the exploitation and utilization of natural and environmental resources.

Firms, Finance and Sustainable Transitions - The Financial Constraints of Eco-Innovation Companies (Hardcover): Edgardo Sica Firms, Finance and Sustainable Transitions - The Financial Constraints of Eco-Innovation Companies (Hardcover)
Edgardo Sica
R2,703 Discovery Miles 27 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This thought-provoking book introduces a financial economics perspective to the topic of eco-innovations and, more generally, sociotechnical transitions. It develops a model that illustrates how financial constraints can prevent the development of eco-innovations within companies and hinder the transition process towards a more sustainable regime. Edgardo Sica presents a review of the state of the art, as well as new data from original surveys aimed at testing the impact of financial constraints on eco-innovative decisions at radical and niche levels. He proposes a definitive conceptualisation of eco-innovations while stressing the relevance of the environmental performance of innovations, rather than the environmental motivation of the innovators. Through the use of a unique multilevel perspective model, the book critically analyses the extent to which financial constraints can hinder eco-innovative decisions, thereby crucially filling a gap in the current literature on eco-innovations. Firms, Finance and Sustainable Transitions will prove a stimulating read for academics, researchers and experts within the fields of eco-innovations, sustainable development, financial and environmental economics, and green finance.

Ecological Film Theory and Psychoanalysis - Surviving the Environmental Apocalypse in Cinema (Paperback): Robert Geal Ecological Film Theory and Psychoanalysis - Surviving the Environmental Apocalypse in Cinema (Paperback)
Robert Geal
R1,325 Discovery Miles 13 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book applies ecolinguistics and psychoanalysis to explore how films fictionalising environmental disasters provide spectacular warnings against the dangers of environmental apocalypse, while highlighting that even these apparently environmentally friendly films can still facilitate problematic real-world changes in how people treat the environment. Ecological Film Theory and Psychoanalysis argues that these films exploit cinema’s inherent Cartesian grammar to construct texts in which not only small groups of protagonist survivors, but also vicarious spectators, pleasurably transcend the fictionalised destruction. The ideological nature of the ‘lifeboats’ on which these survivors escape, moreover, is accompanied by additional elements that constitute contemporary Cartesian subjectivity, such as class and gender binaries, restored nuclear families, individual as opposed to social responsibilities for disasters, and so on. The book conducts extensive analyses of these processes, before considering alternative forms of filmmaking that might avoid the dangers of this existing form of storytelling. The book’s new ecosophy and film theory establishes that Cartesian subjectivity is an environmentally destructive ‘symptom’ that everyday linguistic activities like watching films reinforce. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of film studies, literary studies (specifically ecocriticism), cultural studies, ecolinguistics, and ecosophy.

Rural Electrification - Optimizing Economics, Planning and Policy in an Era of Climate Change and Energy Transition... Rural Electrification - Optimizing Economics, Planning and Policy in an Era of Climate Change and Energy Transition (Paperback)
Najib Altawell, James Milne, Patrice Seowou, Luisa Sykes
R2,827 Discovery Miles 28 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rural Electrification poses solutions to the insuperable modern challenge of providing 24/7 electricity for populations, housing and territory located outside towns and cities. The book reviews the historical development of rural energy systems, their status quo, and the role of renewable and fossil fueled solutions in delivering electricity. It addresses core issues of energy source typologies, resource deployment, fundamental challenges and limitations, the burgeoning threat of climate change, and the role of the renewable energy transition. Chapters account for almost all forms of fuel solutions, with a focus on electrification economics, planning, and policy using the most cost-effective fuels and systems available. Novel approaches to address the challenges of rural electrification, including distributed generation systems, new management and ownership models, off-grid systems, and future energy technologies are thoroughly explored. The work concludes with a comparative assessment of different energy supply technologies and scenarios, contrasting the pros and cons of fossil fuels versus renewable energy resources to achieve the goal of comprehensive rural electrification.
