A Pilot Constructed Treatment Wetland for Pulp and Paper Mill Wastewater - Performance, Processes and Implications for the... A Pilot Constructed Treatment Wetland for Pulp and Paper Mill Wastewater - Performance, Processes and Implications for the Nzoia River, Kenya, UNESCO-IHE PhD (Hardcover)
Margaret Akinyi Abira
R5,476 Discovery Miles 54 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study, conducted in Kenya, gives the first insight into the performance of a constructed treatment wetland receiving pulp and paper mill wastewater in the tropics. The wetland effectively removed organic matter, suspended solids, phenols and nutrients. BOD and phenols reduction rates are reported for the first time. Design parameters and guidelines for the set-up and maintenance of a full-scale wetland are recommended. The study concludes that integrating a full-scale wetland, as a tertiary stage with the existing treatment ponds would significantly improve the quality of water in River Nzoia downstream of the effluent discharge. This is a valuable resource book for scientists, managers and students in the field of wetland ecology, water and environmental management.

Physical Models And Laboratory Techniques In Coastal Engineering (Paperback): Steven A. Hughes Physical Models And Laboratory Techniques In Coastal Engineering (Paperback)
Steven A. Hughes
R1,915 Discovery Miles 19 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Laboratory physical models are a valuable tool for coastal engineers. Physical models help us to understand the complex hydrodynamic processes occurring in the nearshore zone and they provide reliable and economic engineering design solutions. This book is about the art and science of physical modeling as applied in coastal engineering. The aim of the book is to consolidate and synthesize into a single text much of the knowledge about physical modeling that has been developed worldwide. This book was written to serve as a graduate-level text for a course in physical modeling or as a reference text for engineers and researchers engaged in physical modeling and laboratory experimentation. The first three chapters serve as an introduction to similitude and physical models, covering topics such as advantages and disadvantages of physical models, systems of units, dimensional analysis, types of similitude and various hydraulic similitude criteria applicable to coastal engineering models.Practical application of similitude principles to coastal engineering studies is covered in Chapter 4 (Hydrodynamic Models), Chapter 5 (Coastal Structure Models) and Chapter 6 (Sediment Transport Models). These chapters develop the appropriate similitude criteria, discuss inherent laboratory and scale effects and overview the technical literature pertaining to these types of models. The final two chapters focus on the related subjects of laboratory wave generation (Chapter 7) and measurement and analysis techniques (Chapter 8).

In this respect, the assessment of the soil properties is treated including the required investigations for this. The different types of loadings on a dike are also dealt with. Also a number of methods by means of which the loading and the strength are weighed against each other are presented in these guidelines. In the last chapter incalculable aspects are given that are of importance for the construction of flood defences.

These provide an uncomplicated method for estimating both direction and magnitude of flow, and the areal extent of the well's influence. This must-have volume is valuable for hydrologists, regulators, ground water professionals, students, professors, and consultants. This work is a valuable teaching tool for principles of subsurface hydrology. It is easy-to-use and illustrates hydrologic concepts, pumping schemes, remediation schemes, etc. The importance of fundamental aquifer properties can be easily explored, at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Environmental Management Systems & Cleaner Production (Hardcover): R Hillary Environmental Management Systems & Cleaner Production (Hardcover)
R Hillary
R4,766 Discovery Miles 47 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Environmental Management Systems (EMSs) are a way in which business and industry can implement a system of self--regulation on their processes, in order to aid the promotion of clean technology. This book brings together wide ranging analysis and practical experience on Environmental Management Systems and Cleaner Production. This highlights the importance of a clear understanding of complex environmental issues and the relative impact of business and industry, linked to national and international standards and regulations, in developing an efficient Environmental Management System. The book begins by addressing the global dimension of EMSs and Cleaner Production by identifying the strategies and policies used to promote cleaner production in industry and the drivers for voluntary EMSs like the international standard ISO 14001; and their implications for business and trade. This is followed by focusing on selected national perspectives, examining the policies, strategies and initiatives in the USA, Sweden, China, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. The relative merits of regulation or self--regulation are also explored, including the UK situation and the EU s Eco--management and audit schemes (EMAS), and associated certification and accreditation schemes. The second half of the book covers industrial experience of EMSs, such as the British standard BS 7750, and case studies of cleaner production; drawing on practical sector experience and company case studies from Europe, the economies of South America and South Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and small and medium--sized enterprises (SMEs). This book will prove to be an invaluable guide for business managers tackling EMSs and practitioners involved in cleaner production. It will also be a useful reference for local and regional government officials, policymakers and Environmental Management post--graduates.

Transport of multiple Escherichia coli strains in saturated porous media - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Paperback): George Lutterodt Transport of multiple Escherichia coli strains in saturated porous media - UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis (Paperback)
George Lutterodt
R2,639 Discovery Miles 26 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Prediction of microbial transport distances are usually based on the sticking efficiency, a parameter in the classical colloid filtration theory. This parameter represents the interaction between colloid and collector surfaces resulting in deposition. According to the theory, the sticking efficiency is invariable when physico-chemical characteristics of aquifer media are homogeneous. However, many research results have indicated variations within bacterial strains. In this research, the transport of Escherichia Coli in saturated quartz columns were conducted in the laboratory. The objectives were to characterise the distribution of sticking efficiency, measure low sticking efficiency values of cells, and to develop a methodology to measure minimum values of sticking efficiencies within bacterial sub-populations. Also, the work assesses the contribution of phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of Escherichia coli on their attachment to quartz grains.
