This volume provides a needed elaboration of theories and potential
applications of constructivism in science education. Although the
term "constructivism" is used widely, there has been a dearth of
materials to guide science educators concerning the potential of
constructivism to influence what is done in the field. In fact,
there has been a tendency for constructivism to be viewed as a
method that can be used in a classroom. This view tends to diminish
the power of constructivism as a way of thinking about education,
and in particular, about science education. The chapters in this
book address the need to document the theoretical roots of
constructivism and to describe how practitioners have applied
constructivist oriented beliefs in the practice of K-12 teaching of
science and mathematics, as well as teacher education. Not only
does this book contain different theoretical perspectives on
constructivism, but it also features a chapter that critiques
constructivism as an epistemology. Specific topics coveredinclude:
The ten modules included in "Science for Curriculum Leaders" cover the two areas of particular concern in the teaching of science--organizing the classroom for investigations and reviewing science coverage on a whole school basis--and the ways in which issues of more general concern in elementary school curriculum (multicultural education, planning for individual progression, assessment) affect the teaching of science.
Science education has changed radically in recent years, both as a result of debates within the subject and because of curriculum legislation. Jerry Wellington discusses the major issues in science education today - such questions as the balance of content and process in the curriculum, the role of practical work and the nature of science as a subject. He uses this discussion to support a very practical resource for teachers in training and their mentors. The book covers every aspect of science teaching, including: planning; differentiation and special needs; assessment; practical work; problem-solving and investigations; IT in science; handling sensitive issues, such as sex education; and building on children's prior learning. Througout, Wellington's guidance is accompanied by suggestions for discussion, activities for individual and group use and annotated lists of further reading aimed at helping the reader to build up a personal apprach to the teaching of the subject. Students should also find useful the glossaries of specialist terminology at the end of each chapter, and the references to National Curriculum attainment targets at every point in the book.

They search high and low for fossils, and one day Mary spots a huge eye in a cliff face high above the town. She resolves to bring the creature down -- no matter what the risk.
