Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr. won the world heavyweight championship
at the age of 22, the same year he joined the Nation of Islam and
changed his name to Muhammad Ali. He would go on to become the
first and only three-time (in succession) World Heavyweight
Champion. Nicknamed "The Greatest," Ali was as well known for his
unique boxing style, consisting of the Ali Shuffle and the
rope-a-dope, as he was for the catchphrase "float like a butterfly,
sting like a bee." He was an uncompromising athlete who brought
beauty and grace to a very rough sport and became one of the
world's most famous cultural icons. Read "Who Is Muhammad Ali?" and
discover "The Greatest."
Each of us has challenges, obstacles and situations to overcome.
Some, more than others. Until we can step into the lives of others,
it is difficult to appreciate the opportunity that our own
situation offers. This story is my own story. I never knew that it
was in any way "inspiring" to others. My wife, Teri has always used
me as an example to others what perseverance, guts, and character
can do in overcoming difficulties. She has always wanted me to tell
my story as a testament to the power of individual will. As I
reflected on the elements that have shaped me, most of them
occurred when I was very young. As accurately as possible, based on
my own recollections and from information given to me by my
relatives, I tell my story to you, kind reader. I have a passion
for track and field, for running. I also have a passion for
coaching. Not until I finally put in writing my experiences, have I
understood the real underlying reasons for wanting to coach. I hope
you can use my story as encouragement.
