"Boland's clear, accessible text reflects years of professional
experience as a performer and teacher of the one-key flute. Her
book answers all the practical needs of beginners and offers
advanced flutists a wealth of useful information. Even players
wedded to the Boehm flute will gain fresh musical insights from
Boland's comprehensive method."--Laurence Libin, Department of
Musical Instruments, Metropolitan Museum of Art
"This is the best introduction to the one-key (baroque) flute
for Boehm system flute players available today. With her
comprehensive knowledge of the numerous historical treatises and
tutors and her extensive practical experience as a player and
teacher, Jan Boland has fashioned a guide that is at the same time
informative and enjoyable. I only wish it had been available when I
set out to learn the one-key flute. It would have saved me much
time and led me directly to the most important sources."--John
Thow, composer and Professor of Music at the University of
California, Berkeley
"An easy-to-read format, clear prose, attractive graphics, and
well chosen and very legible music make it an ideal beginner's
tutor."--Betty Bang Mather, Professor Emeritus, University of Iowa
School of Music
This book by the former Professor of Flute at the Royal Academy of
Music (1945-1985) and Principal Flute of the Philharmonia Orchestra
(1949-1972) is designed for professional and amateur alike. It
contains detailed instructions for sound production, breath
control, intonation, tonguing, and dynamics and offers sound advice
on phrasing, tone, vibrato, and orchestral playing. There are
annotated fingering charts showing normal fingerings, alternative
fingerings, and trill fingerings, and a concise account of the
history of the instrument. There is a useful repertory list and an
appendix by Sebastian Bell (Principal Flute of the London
Sinfonietta and current Professor of Flute at the RAM) describing
avant-garde techniques.
This handbook for flautists addresses all who wish to consider the issues raised when performing music of the past, and experiment with them on old or new instruments. Its aim is to provide an authoritative and practical guide with evidence drawn from a variety of primary sources directly and indirectly associated with the flute. The author provides sound advice on instruments and their care, historical techniques, stylistic issues and historically informed interpretation, with examples drawn from a wide range of case studies, including Bach, Handel, Mozart and Brahms.

Wind Talk for Woodwinds provides instrumental music teachers,
practitioners, and students with a handy, easy-to-use pedagogical
resource for woodwind instruments found in school instrumental
programs. With thorough coverage of the most common woodwind
instruments - flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, and bassoon - the
book offers the most topical and information necessary for
effective teaching. This includes terminology, topics, and concepts
associated with each specific instrument, along with teaching
suggestions that can be applied in the classroom. Be sure to look
to the back of the book for a "Practical Tips" section, which
discusses common technical faults and corrections, common problems
with sound (as well as their causes and solutions to them),
fingering charts, literature lists (study materials, method books,
and solos), as well as a list of additional resources relevant to
teaching woodwind instruments (articles, websites, audio
recordings). Without question, Wind Talk for Woodwinds stands alone
as an invaluable resource for woodwinds!
This classic study, now revised and updated, shows how scientific
calculations can be used to improve the understanding, design, and
tuning of woodwind instruments. A powerful tool for correcting
tuning errors in existing instruments and for creating new designs,
Nederveen's analysis has long been a standard in the field of
acoustics.
Nederveen's aim is to find systematic and accurate methods for
calculating the position and size of tone holes and functional bore
corrections for the various woodwinds. He achieves this aim and
further provides a detailed application to the design of flutes,
clarinets, saxophones, oboes, and bassoons.
An extended new chapter analyzing and interpreting recent
developments in acoustics of woodwind instruments, a list of
symbols, and a subject index complete this revised edition. This
book is a necessity for specialists in the physics of acoustics,
music teachers, and anyone interested in woodwind design.
