Global software development (GSD) projects should allow efficient development of complex software systems while teams coming from diverse cultural backgrounds, technical capabilities, and time zones work together. However, GSD projects are also complex socio-technical systems which face the challenge of facilitating collaboration in a heterogeneous and changing technical environment. This book presents: 1) A model to describe GSD projects as socio-technical systems and analyze their risks and weak spots in order to support the project manager weigh the trade-offs between resources, quality and schedule that come with changes in the project plan. 2) A domain-specific language for notification modeling, which allows precise and user-friendly modeling of the notification requirements. 3) The tool prototype Noticon, which integrates the work tools that are used in GSD projects via open source technologies (Mule, ActiveMQ, Drools) in order to provide rich notification capabilities. 4) A feasibility study for the evaluation of the model and the tool prototype conducted in cooperation with experts from Siemens PSE in the context of a typical GSD environment.

Globalization and increased competition require that software products are introduced to the market as early as possible. For the successful development of software products it is crucial to take the process view which distinguishes between three processes that consist of multiple steps: product management processes, project management processes and software methodologies. The software industry differentiates itself from the classical production industry by having a great variety of software methodologies available. Often project management processes are perceived isolated from the product development processes for software products. In order to guarantee a successful product development the phases and milestones between these three process types need to be aligned. This work shows the process alignment from the project management view. It identifies the relationships between project management, product management and software development methodologies. Further it provides systems dynamics models for software methodologies to show the effect of these software methodologies over time and to identify the parameters that can influence the progress of a project.
The contemporary genre of software art is characterized by creative and critical engagement with the technical language of computer programming. While at one level this represents a new realm of artistic possibility, at another level it raises fundamental questions concerning how aesthetic practices can intervene within processes of logical abstraction and instrumental engineering. This monograph argues that the potential of software art resides less in defining a settled and clearly delineated creative field than in opening up a space of vital aesthetic risk in which a variety of discursive boundaries can be challenged. It begins by examining the notion of software within computer science and new media theory, moves on to provide an overview of the emergence of software art, and then considers a range of specific dilemmas - of cultural position, of aesthetic visibility and of recursive focus - that the genre confronts. These dilemmas are addressed both generally and in relation to aspects of the author's own software art practice. This monograph should prove interesting to theorists and practitioners in the fields of media, new media and software art.
In today s world, most global companies face enormous challenges in dealing with an inflexible budget climate when complex changes are required. "Secrets to a Successful Commercial Software Implementation" will help guide business leaders to gain understanding of how commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) software like SAP, Seibel, and PeopleSoft should be applied in order to ultimately achieve significant cost savings. Project management professional Nick Berg utilizes his strong background in domestic and international Systems Applications and Products to teach others the potential benefits of implementing COTS products such as faster deployment time, enhanced quality and reliability, reduced development risk, provided periodic upgrades and improvements, and an already established support system. He introduces a unique process for COTS development, presents best-practice processes for COTS projects, and defines the architecture procedures within the COTS environment. Finally, he walks through each project phase of a COTS-based project by introducing the objectives, road map, roles, activities, artifacts, and milestone of the phase. The cultural impact on an organization facing this decision is profound, but if implemented with forethought, planning, and dedicated guidance and execution, the benefits to an organization will be long reaching and significant.

Attribute Enabled Programming (AEP) is a wide-spreading technique that uses attributes to decorate existing code entities. AEP is supported in several general purpose languages, such as, .NET and Java, and by modeling languages, such as, MOF / UML. Attribute annotations may, however, fail to scale. Attribute dependencies complicate the interpretation and add-hoc solutions are difficult to maintain. A well defined development methodology that covers all the steps of Attribute Enabled Software Development (AESD) needs to be applied. This book focuses on the domain of mobile device software applications, based on Java Micro Edition (Java ME), and discusses the complete steps of applying AESD to model domain specific abstractions. Relation to product-lines is explored, and a concept of attribute-supported mobile containers to organize domain services, adapted from the enterprise containers, such as, Java EE and COM+, is presented. A structured methodology to transform attribute-based abstractions that warranties termination is introduced and illustrated. The book targets software professionals, and researchers in software engineering, programming languages, and graph transformations.
The quest for more productive ways of developing high quality software has been ongoing and software product lines promises to improve product quality and the development speed at a fraction of the cost. Common examples of product lines in other areas include mobile phones, cars, consumer electronic devices such as TVs and the like. The products in a product line all share some common features and there are some features that are specific to some products only. Crucial to this approach is the large-scale reuse of the product line software architecture. This book deals with the problem of assessing, analyzing or evaluating product line architectures. It characterizes such architectures from the point of view of architecture analysis and describes a holistic method for completing the assessment. Case studies and discussions help readers use the approach described in their own projects. This book is addressed to professional software architects and developers building or planning to build software product lines. It is also directed towards researchers in Software Architectures and Software Product Lines.
On-road vehicles are a key source of air pollution in metropolitan areas. Transportation planners and policy makers are confronted with the impacts of transportation on air quality. They require a tool to quantify the environmental effects of planned transportation control and urban development measure and thus aid in selecting the most suitable projects. This book describes the development of CALMOB6 - a tool to estimate emissions and fuel consumption effects of proposed developments or regulations before they are implemented. The model incorporates twenty-one vehicle sub-classes. On a second-by-second basis, CALMOB6 calculates emission rates of carbon monoxide, nitric oxides, hydrocarbons, particulates and carbon dioxide, as well as the fuel consumption rates for vehicles operating in an urban region. It can forecast these quantities till year 2050. CALMOB6 considers effects of alternative fuels, vehicle fleet, cold-starts, super-emitters and environmental conditions. The tool can produce an inventory on scales varying from an entire urban region down to a single identified street at a single operating time-scale. This book is addressed to professionals in transportation and environment.

Software developer turnover can have disastrous effects on an organization due to the loss of business process knowledge, as well as acquired technical skills. Annual rates of turnover in information technology (IT) departments have been estimated at 20% or more with the cost of replacing technology workers ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 times annual salaries. This study purposely focused only on software developers as opposed to IT employees in general due to the critical nature of their work. The factors leading to turnover intention in this field are poorly understood; therefore, this study was designed to further understand the relationships between job characteristics, job satisfaction, and turnover intention among software developers. 326 web surveys were completed that contained questions relating to job characteristics, job satisfaction, turnover intention, and demographic information. The first four job characteristics are specific to software developers while the last five job characteristics and the job satisfaction scales are from the Hackman and Oldham Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS). Two research questions, sixteen hypotheses, and a theoretical path model were developed to understand which job characteristic variables contribute to the various dimensions of job satisfaction and which job satisfaction dimensions contribute to turnover intention. Additionally, the indirect effects of job characteristics through job satisfaction on turnover intention were also determined. The statistical testing consisted of descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. Bivariate correlations are presented, as well as path analysis, an extension of multiple regression analysis. The results of the study uncovered several factors that can influence turnover intention among software developers. Identified in the study as statistically significant job characteristics that can be influenced by management are training, autonomy, feedback, number of developers, task significance, and skill variety. With the results of this study, management can better understand the unique needs of software developers and design development jobs to ensure that these needs are met. The study concludes with implications for practitioners and recommendations for future research.
