Global software development (GSD) projects should allow efficient development of complex software systems while teams coming from diverse cultural backgrounds, technical capabilities, and time zones work together. However, GSD projects are also complex socio-technical systems which face the challenge of facilitating collaboration in a heterogeneous and changing technical environment. This book presents: 1) A model to describe GSD projects as socio-technical systems and analyze their risks and weak spots in order to support the project manager weigh the trade-offs between resources, quality and schedule that come with changes in the project plan. 2) A domain-specific language for notification modeling, which allows precise and user-friendly modeling of the notification requirements. 3) The tool prototype Noticon, which integrates the work tools that are used in GSD projects via open source technologies (Mule, ActiveMQ, Drools) in order to provide rich notification capabilities. 4) A feasibility study for the evaluation of the model and the tool prototype conducted in cooperation with experts from Siemens PSE in the context of a typical GSD environment.
Our environment is more and more shaped by the influence of digital media which itself evolves at tremendous pace. A small example: 15 years ago, offthe- shelf computers were only able to cope with flat 2D graphics. Improvements in system design made it possible to process 3D scenes, leading to a powerful contribution to our everyday life. However, such scenes need to be created by experienced artists employing difficult and expensive tools. The increasing demand for realism makes things not easier. At the same time, the rapid improvement of commodity hardware enables the development of low cost systems for 3D photography. How can systems for volumetric scene reconstruction be efficiently designed? How may high quality be combined with real-time processing? And how is it possible to create a lightweight architecture using a single computer? After presenting an introductory overview and sketching a novel approach to scene reconstruction, the author Christian Nitschke gives a survey of related work in high-performance reconstruction by shape from silhouette and shape from photo-consistency. To convey a profound understanding to the reader he explains the fundamentals of scene and camera geometry, image formation, light and color as well as 3D reconstruction from multiple views. The novel approach is then introduced in two steps by mapping a basic algorithm to an advanced algorithm using graphics hardware acceleration. Performance and quality issues are analyzed and discussed in detail. The book aims at software and system engineers, scientists and researchers, technical directors as well as the interested public.
The contemporary genre of software art is characterized by creative and critical engagement with the technical language of computer programming. While at one level this represents a new realm of artistic possibility, at another level it raises fundamental questions concerning how aesthetic practices can intervene within processes of logical abstraction and instrumental engineering. This monograph argues that the potential of software art resides less in defining a settled and clearly delineated creative field than in opening up a space of vital aesthetic risk in which a variety of discursive boundaries can be challenged. It begins by examining the notion of software within computer science and new media theory, moves on to provide an overview of the emergence of software art, and then considers a range of specific dilemmas - of cultural position, of aesthetic visibility and of recursive focus - that the genre confronts. These dilemmas are addressed both generally and in relation to aspects of the author's own software art practice. This monograph should prove interesting to theorists and practitioners in the fields of media, new media and software art.
Globalization and increased competition require that software products are introduced to the market as early as possible. For the successful development of software products it is crucial to take the process view which distinguishes between three processes that consist of multiple steps: product management processes, project management processes and software methodologies. The software industry differentiates itself from the classical production industry by having a great variety of software methodologies available. Often project management processes are perceived isolated from the product development processes for software products. In order to guarantee a successful product development the phases and milestones between these three process types need to be aligned. This work shows the process alignment from the project management view. It identifies the relationships between project management, product management and software development methodologies. Further it provides systems dynamics models for software methodologies to show the effect of these software methodologies over time and to identify the parameters that can influence the progress of a project.
The quest for more productive ways of developing high quality software has been ongoing and software product lines promises to improve product quality and the development speed at a fraction of the cost. Common examples of product lines in other areas include mobile phones, cars, consumer electronic devices such as TVs and the like. The products in a product line all share some common features and there are some features that are specific to some products only. Crucial to this approach is the large-scale reuse of the product line software architecture. This book deals with the problem of assessing, analyzing or evaluating product line architectures. It characterizes such architectures from the point of view of architecture analysis and describes a holistic method for completing the assessment. Case studies and discussions help readers use the approach described in their own projects. This book is addressed to professional software architects and developers building or planning to build software product lines. It is also directed towards researchers in Software Architectures and Software Product Lines.
The increasing amount of information on the internet makes it hard to filter out relevant parts. Every second hundreds of news-articles and blog-entries are written. A subscriber to this constant stream of information quickly looses overview - a typical needle-in-a-haystack problem. Especially in the field of news-reading, software can help to increase efficiency by personalized filtering mechanisms. This filtering can be predictive based on previous user-choices, but also heeds the power of social networks: Users help each other by marking relevant information. The author Ingo Schommer investigates the conceptual and practical development of a web-based news-reader with advanced filtering features. Research is conducted in the field of information visualization and filtering as well as in competitive products and their shortcomings. The solution will mainly target pro-users who are already accustomed with news-reading, the modern "information junkies."
The project is based on the benefits of Design by Contract on testing. If contracts - preconditions, postconditions, class invariants - are systematically associated with classes, they provide an invaluable source of information for producing systematic tests, directly based on the software's expressly intended semantics. The goal of this project is to develop a tool called "Test Wizard," which generates test cases automatically from contract-equipped classes. The Test Wizard will serve as a workbench to try out different testing strategies.
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Computer Science - Software, University of Paderborn, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, comment: This work will give insight on the current developments in the field of server virtualization and the various techniques involved in it as well as a short historical overview about when the first types of virtualization were introduced. The findings will mostly be supported by examples of current virtual environments (especially the XEN project)., abstract: Server virtualization is currently a field of IT which is undergoing a rapid development. Introducing an even spread of performance on server farms which results in a good TCO (total cost of ownership), virtualization has already got the full attention from industry, resulting in massive participation and huge acquisitions. With server virtualization the size of server farms can be reduced dramatically, resulting in a lower total cost of ownership and (by using techniques like Linux-HA in virtual environments) increased availability. Even with an overhead of 10-20% on the layer of virtualization it is still very interesting since the load on a server farm can be spread evenly (which is not only a main target in server virtualization but also in distributed systems in general). This work will give an insight on the current developments in the field of server virtualization and the various techniques involved in it as well as a short historical overview about when the first types of virtualization were introduced (and why they failed, since according to A. Tanenbaum the current hardware is not made to be virtualized). The findings will mostly be supported by examples of current virtual environments (especially the XEN project). The paper will first introduce the different ways of virtualizing a system and in how far hardware can or can not support this. The second part will introduce the current software for virtualizing a server and giving user

Diploma Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Computer Science - Applied, grade: 2.0, University of Salzburg (Department of Computer Sciences), course: Natural Computation, 36 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This thesis presents techniques to detect mental blocks in humans based on the physiological parameters skin potential and skin resistance. We examine physiological measures from the Musico Cause and Effect study of the Science Network for Man and Music at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts, Mozarteum Salzburg. The existing digital signal analysis tool AIDA used to process the physiological data has been replaced by the Dynalyzer developed by the author with considerable improvements in accuracy and performance. We present fundamentals of digital signal processing, outline the measurement of physiological data, and discuss characteristics of mental blocks. We suggest several criteria for the detection of mental blocks based on characteristic features of the physiological time series in the time and/or frequency domain. In first experiments the potential of these criteria is evaluated by applying them to actual physiological data of a test subject. As no ground truth on the occurrence of mental blocks is available, the experimental results can only be an indicator for the quality of the detection of mental blocks. Further experiments are conducted with data from the Vienna determination test assessing the reactive stress tolerance and attention deficits of human test subjects.

Attribute Enabled Programming (AEP) is a wide-spreading technique that uses attributes to decorate existing code entities. AEP is supported in several general purpose languages, such as, .NET and Java, and by modeling languages, such as, MOF / UML. Attribute annotations may, however, fail to scale. Attribute dependencies complicate the interpretation and add-hoc solutions are difficult to maintain. A well defined development methodology that covers all the steps of Attribute Enabled Software Development (AESD) needs to be applied. This book focuses on the domain of mobile device software applications, based on Java Micro Edition (Java ME), and discusses the complete steps of applying AESD to model domain specific abstractions. Relation to product-lines is explored, and a concept of attribute-supported mobile containers to organize domain services, adapted from the enterprise containers, such as, Java EE and COM+, is presented. A structured methodology to transform attribute-based abstractions that warranties termination is introduced and illustrated. The book targets software professionals, and researchers in software engineering, programming languages, and graph transformations.
